A .74-f -- ,X-,....q.,..f V 9.2.3 A Q 4 - Captain f .f Captain Edward Ayres Boyd was born on 21 August 1920 in Louisiana, Missouri, but considers Rock Island, Illinois his home. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana College and did graduate workin Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New York University. He entered the Navy as an Ensign in Washington, D.C. in June 1944 and served as an Aerological Officer in the Southwest Pacific with advanced base units in the Philippines, Japan and Truk. After the war he attended Lighter-than-Air Flight Training and was designated a Naval Aviator in April 1946. Captain Boyd then served in Airship Squadron One at Santa Ana, California and Weeksville, North Carolina. He was Assistant Engineering Officer, Overhaul and Repair Department, Lakehurst, NewJersey until he entered Heavier-than-Air Flight Training in 1951. He was then assigned to Patrol Squadron 26 at Brunswick, Maine, serving as ASW Officer. In 1954 he was ordered to the Staff, Commander Fleet Air1Wings Atlantic as Aviation Safety Officer. He attended General Line School in Monterey from January 1957 until November 1957, at which time he was ordered to the Office of 'fPfaf5lf f'a-iff-f-fe A Captain Edward Ayres Boyd, U.S. Navy Legislative Affairs in Washington, D.C., where he served for three years as Liaison Officer to the Appropriations Committee, House of Representatives. He served as Executive Officer of VS-24 ID Norfolk, Virginia, and as Commanding Officer of VS-20 in Ouonset Point, Rhode Island. From 1962 to 1964, Captain Boyd served aboard the USS YORKTOWN as Air Officer. He was then ordered to command the Fighting Lady's Air Group, CVSG-55, which was the first air group of its kind to be employed in the Vietnam conflict. In November 1965 he reported to the Chief of Naval Operations as Head of the Air Undersea Warfare Develop- ment Branch, DCNO iDevelopmenti. During this tour he also served as Deputy Liaison Officer for the Naval Warfare Panel, President's Science Advisory Committee, National Representative information Exchange Group 2, NATO, and as National Leader Airborne Systems Panel, Sub-Group G , Technical Cooperation. Captain Boyd relieved Captain Anthony J-.
