The Operations Department, playing a vital role in the ship's mission, is comprised of men whose skills are highly technical ,and at times very complicated. The Quartermasters are responsible for determining courses and speeds to destinations and maintain charts. Establishing communications with other ships by means of visual signals is the job- of our ever ready Signalmen, while our Radiomen are responsible for long range communications via teletype and Morse Code. Our Radarmen, sometimes referred to as scope dopes , perform the tedious job of tracking and evaluating the ships and aircraft operating in the ship's vicinity and making recommendations as to courses and speeds to be used. Backing these men up with their storehouse of technical knowledge, our Electronics Technicians are constantly working to maintain the readiness of all electronic gear, adjusting equipment to obtain optimum performance and completely overhauling gear when necessary. ill Z le. For our hard charging SK's Now man the hi-Iine can mean delivery of anything from popcorn to jet engines, cotter pins to toilet bowls, and of course gallons and gallons of ice cream. The CS's have consistently provided fine food, highlighted by cookouts, old fashioned barbeques, monthly birthday parties and even battle messing. Our SH's provided us with haircuts, laundry, and the finest assortments of ship stores and small stores merchandise. The SD's, from what we hear, have provided our officers with the finest of the culinary arts. Last, but not least our.. Supply Department provides the service which makes us all happy . . .
