Executive 0fficer Lieutenant Commander Dwight Eugene Avis Jr., U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Dwight Eugene Avis Jr. was bornon 20 November 1934 in Washington, D.C. and lived in the nation's capital for the next eighteen years. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1957. His first assignment as an Ensign was on the USS ESSEX as Auxiliaries Division Officer. While he was attached to ESSEX the CVA participated in both the defense of Lebanon and the patrol off the coast of Formosa during an extensive eleven month deployment. From October 1959 to ,July 1961 Leiutenant Commander Avis served as Gunnery Officer on USS STEINAKER. In September 1961 he reported for duty in Holy Loch, Scotland as the first Officer in Charge of the U.S. Naval Support Detachment, Greenock, Scotland. Lieutenant Commander Avis changed his name from Avis to IVlacAvis and had the unusual challenge of establishing the supporting shore facilities for the first deployment of Polaris submarines, servicing tender USS PROTEUS and between 1000-1200 U.S. Naval dependents. During this tenure he was also attached to the Royal Navy Staff of the Captain in Charge of the Clyde and was a member of the Scottish Junior Chamber of Commerce in Greenock. He was ordered in October 1965 as Engineering Officer on the USS GUNSTON HALL, homeported in San Diego, California. Subsequently, GUNSTON HALL deployed with the Seventh Fleet and provided amphibious lift for the aluminum air field to be erected at Chu Lai and the first Hawk Battalion to be landed at Danang, Vietnam. During 1966 and 1967 Lieutenant Commander Avis acted as Fleet Operations and Construction Advisor on the staff of Navy Advisory Group, U.S. lVIilitary Assistance Command, Thailand. This second tour of foreign shore duty found Lieutenant Commander Avis participating often in Royal Thai Navy fleet operations and in combined Thai-U.S. force objectives planning. ln addition he made major contributions to the preparation and implementation of plans for the construction of a modern naval base for the Royal Thai Navy. On February 15, 1968 Lieutenant Commander Avis reported to USS TALUGA for duty as Executive Officer and has since served with TALUGA during 16 logistics operations off the coast of Vietnam.
