Dave enjoyed running and put everything into all lie did. . Tiiere is a mystery too deep for words; The silence of the dead comes nearer to it. Being wisest in the end. The purpose of F.T.A. is for TA’s (Teachers Aides) and ET’s (Exploratory Teachers) to work closely with the teachers and students, and help them in doing various secretary type jobs and sometimes teaching the class. At the meetings members discuss the problems they have with students in their class. Such problems are: students wanting unexcused absences or tardies changed to excused. Cheating by obtaining tests before the time they're given. Alraid to speak up in class lor fear of being laughed at, and generally a poor attitude in class. The club also is helping its members choose a college career they want to pursue. Since some TA's and ET's work hard for the teachers and students, FTA plans to take a day off school at the end of the year, and go on a field trip. The usual money making activities were used to raise money for this. One of these was a successful Homemade Candy sale during Christmas. Not pictured: Debbie Kalanquin, Sue Orova, Norccn Walsh Patti Miller. In January of 1976, a Journalism class was offered for interested students during sixth period. iMr. Donald Graham, a big man with a menacing face that frightened half of recruits away, went around looking for talented people to reduce to jelly. When he was through searching, he found he had not only discovered talent, but some of the bravest people in Tahoma. At times we couldn’t (and still can’t) decide who is worse, Mr. Graham or Stanette, who was always on us like the plague, when articles weren’t handed in, and whenever we needed an assuring smile we would go to Karen, who would cluck and shake her head then demand to know where our articles were. Then we had Scott Sims, who used his creative ingenuity for his well-known “Jock Strip. Another favorite of the staff, Teresa Hensley, provided much knowledgable input to the staff and the construction of the pages. The staff shutter-bug. Bob Gerbing provided the Herald Staff with many “unique photos? From shots ranging anywhere from his dogs Tina ;.:td riccWee, to motorcycles, Vince Dale and trees. All kidding aside. In comparison to other school papers, our’s comes out close enough to the top, to make us feel it was worth while. This is the 1976-77 Herald History. The Editors wish to express their gratitude not only to Mr. Graham, who was more than understanding; but also to the entire staff, who we grew to admire and respect for their own 72 individuality of opinion and personality. Above all, we’d like to thank our supporters, Tahoma High as a whole; and our avid critics, (Journalism I) to whom we wish all the luck in the world. 1. Not pictured, Noreen Walsh, Bob Gerbing , Jill Pound Dedication- This word best describes the Yearbook Staff of 1976-77. Without the experience of Advisor, Mr. Don Graham, and the dedication of the Yearbook staff, the yearbook would have been another “summer special. The Yearbook Staff, though, was plagued with problems from the beginning to the end of the year. One main problem was inexperience. Editor Alicia Sandhei and Senior Editor Tammy Tulloch were the soul veterens returning from last year’s Yearbook Staff. The rest of Staff has had only one semester or less of Journalism, aprerequisilefor being a Yearbook Staff member. Another almost insurmountable problem was getting pictures to work with out of Bob Gerbing, the school photographer. Bob was sometimes busy working on the Tahoma Herald Staff or working on an assignment for the Voice of the Valley, and did not have the time to work for the Yearbook Staff. However, in spite of all these problems, the Yearbook Staff would not succumb, they hung right in there through thick and thin, staying after school until all hours of the night, and then made a last ditch effort to produce the Yearbook on time. Therefore, it is at this time that the KI AH YU Staff of 1976-77 presents to you. this Yearbook. I. Mr. Graham giving a helping hand. 2. Kditor Alicia Sandhei and Assistant Editor, Patti Miller. 3. The talented students in the Competitive Speaking class encouraged Miss Lantz to make it an active club. During the 1976 77 year the club participated in ten speech contests, and in Pep Assemblies. To finance this years activities, P.A.B. sold blue and gold bear stocking hats, collected $1.00 dues from each club member, assembled a Homecoming Float and organized the spectacular Homecoming Dance. P.A.B.'s finest moment, however, came last January. The Club organized a Winter Sports Festival that lasted a whole week, Monday was Hat and Sock Day; Tuesday was Freshmen Day; Wednesday, Sophomore Day; Thursday, Junior Day; and Senior Day was Friday. During each of the class days, the class whose day it was, was responsible for promoting school spirit throughout the school. P.A.B. officers for this year were Scott Sims, President: Keri Barber, Vice President; Nola Tresner, Activities Chairman; and Pietsje Bokma, Student Council Representative. 78 FBLA The purpose of puturc Business Leaders of America is to acquaint students with the business world and give them an opportunity to utilize and improve their skills needed for employment. Also the club activities involving learning to communicate with people in the community and other student clubs. To raise the money to accomplish these goals, our club produced and sold the football programs, held the first dance of the year, and sold two-year calendar planners. With this money we gave a luncheon for local business people and showed the film “Business Week.” During the summer, some of the members spent a week in Ellensberg at Central Washington State College. This week was devoted to learning about the business world and Washington State economy. During the year, two members attended a Western Regional Leadership Conference in San Francisco. Members also went to regional and state conferences where they competed in the different areas of their business skills. Wc also had fun activities such as a Christmas party at Mrs. Hyde’s house, a bowling party, and a formal dinner to celebrate a successful year. Garry Dickover, Student Bouy Presiuent, said “The student council this year was run a little differently. There was more parlimentary procedure used this year because I feel it helped the Student Council run more effectively. We had plenty of participation which also helped. 1 would like to comment on the student council and their organization and enthusiasm. We had many obstacles to overcome and we did overcome them. This was one of the best years for T.H.S. and I’m glad I was a part of it.” 82 Executive Board The Executive Board is made up of the ASB President, Garry Diekover, ASB Vice President, Mark Aspelund; ASB Secretary, Marian Honeysuckle; ASB Treasurer, Lori Prin .ing, and Inter-High Representative, Melanie Miles. In addition to the usual concert series, the band planned a tour to Central Alberta and British Columbia in Canada for March, was invited to play at the University of Washington by the Daughters of the American Revolution, and even put on a haunted house during Halloween. The number of students in band doubled from the proceeding year, thanks in part to the additional period in the school day. Coach Bill Maxwell played football at Idaho’s Weiser High School. He enjoyed his major college career as a University of Idaho Vandal. One of the things that the new coach noticed when he came to the old high school (now the Junior High) was that there was no football field. He personally helped with the construction of a practice field. Later that year, he also helped build a track. It is this kind of effort above and beyond the call of duty that moved Athletic Director Pete Ryan to comment, “1 don’t know of any man who is more committed or more dedicated to an ithletic orogram.” This is the kind of devotion to a cause that people have come to expect from Bill Maxwell. Up till 1975, Tahoma football teams played their ome games in such places as Auburn, Issaquah, Renton, Kent and Enumclaw. Despite the hardship, Maxwell’s team had some very successful years, finishing in the top three in the league eight times during his 18 years tenure, including a league co-championship team in 1966. Although Maxwell is recognized mostly for his achievements as football coach, he also coached Cross Country, uasketball, and Track in earlier years at Tahoma. Bill Maxwell is considered by many to be one of the most dynamic forces in forming the athletic program that Tahoma has today, and his retirement from coaching marks a milestone in this school’s history, which is rather appropriate because he is always one to go that “extra mile.” William Maxwell Football Stadium. 97 Varsity Football Tough, mean, rowdie, and fierce, these words describe our mighty Tahoma 76-77 football team. Smashing If there is only one word you could use to discribe the 1976 Tahoma Volleyball Team, that one word would have to be ‘Stupendous.’ Ms. Shaw began her season practices during August, and by the time the school year had started, Ms. Shaw had already assembled an All-Star team that suffered only one league defeat at the hands of White River, and 13 league wins, making this year’s volleyball team co-champions with White River for the Seamount League Volleyball Title. This is the third yeai straight that Tahoma has had the number one volleyball team in the Seamount League. At State, the girls volleyball team de-deated Shadle Park and Decatur, then lost to Mount Lake Terrace and Kent Meridian, placing Tahoma 7th in the state among AA and AAA schools. The awards received this year were “All Conference” by Marv Motley and Mark Aspelund, “Eagle, by Mark Aspelund, and “Medalist Honor” by Mark Aspelund, Marv Motley, and Howard Hilde. This type of excitement was brought and positive attitude. The season record was improved over year to 6 wins and 14 losses. Five of these wins were in league contests which was a team record under Mike Willis’ direction. Nestled in the fourteen losses were seven games that were lost by and average of 3.7 points. In the span of a year many players came to the top of the league in individual performances. Namely those of Junior Givens, Paul Palmer, and Brad Powell. With the hustle, desire, and competitve spirit that these indiv-gave, many other ball players came on to help in their own way. These players were Scott Sims, Brian Alley, Jerome Kinzler, Garry Dickover, Mark Ryan, and Mark Aspelund. As a team came in sixth place in the tough Seamount League averaging 57 points per game. This team produced a season record of 7 wins (3 of which were in overtime) and 12 losses. A new face to the Freshmen team but an old hand at basketball, Coach David Dore had these words to say about how his team’s season went. “Though not as successful as their potential warranted, the Freshmen basketball team worked hard all season. Wet weather at the beginning of the season brought many complications. The tournament that was taking place to decide the top players, wasn’t completed in time for the first match, and some matches had to be cancelled because of the rain. A team “ladder” was set up ranking the girls and boys in orde . There were many challenge matches that enabled people to work their way up on to the varsity squad. The top 4 players varied from time to time throughout the season, so many different people were able to play in the matches. The returning lettermen this year were Fred Wright, Randy Messer, Mark Ryan, and Laurie Anderton, who all contributed their effort and inspiration to help the season to move along smoothly. The girls’ track team started with a light attendance this year. From the first turnout there were displays ot promising talents. The team acquired a new coach this season. Miss Gayle Lantz, former Mt. Si track coach. There was a big competitive rivalry between Tahoma and the coach’s former stomping grounds, each trying to prove they were the better. Two other new additions this season were new uniforms and an addition of a two mile race for girls. The team included four seniors, plenty of juniors, quite a few sophomores, and a majority of freshmen. These girls came home victors from their first meet with great spirit and team pride that was carried throughout the season. An emphasis was put on team unity and Miss Lantz was a big influence for the team. All in all, the 1977 track season was a big success for the girls. Under new coach, Mr. Les Harmon, the boys’ track team had several talented runners who broke a lot of school records. Brad Powell ran undefeated in the 880, and also ran as anchor man on the undefeated mile relay team, composed of himself, Scott Winchell, Kurt Wedlund and Ron Schrift. Seasoned runner Dean Tongue broke the school record in the Pole Vault, while first year runners Junior Givens and Scott Winchell ran well at league, district, and state, with Junior undefeated in the 100 yard dash and Scott Winchell in the 440 yard run. Throughout the season the Boys’ Track team proved that Tahoma had a lot to be proud of. Left: Junior Givens proving himself a winner in yet another meet. Varsity Baseball First row left to right: Lloyd Williams, Don Habenicht, Garry Dickover, Mark Aspelund, Rob Keener, Tim Acker, Max Legg. Second row: Coach Wood, Erik Hagman, Howard Hilde, Dave Prewitt, Roy Cargo, Scott Gordon, Scott Miller, Coach Brunelle. Returning lettermen, experienced rookies, and a great coach were the ingredients that made the 1977 baseball season one of the most exciting in recent years. “A great nucleus of returning lettermen,” said Coach Wood. Mark Aspelund at short stop, Roy Cargo at first base, Garry Dickover in left field, and Dave Prewitt pitching, were the players that showed the rookies what it takes to be a good ball player. “A real good group of ball players,” was the comment from Coach Wood regarding his rookie varsity players. Tim Acker at second base, Robby Keener at third base, and in the out field, Don Habenicht, Howard Hilde, Lloyd Williams, and a returner from last season, Scott Gordon. Catching Chores were handled by Scott Miller. The big hole left by last year’s graduating seniors was in the pitchers mound. Dave Prewitt, with limited varsity experience at the mound, was the sole pitcher returning from last year, however, he was releaved from time to time by sophomore Lloyd Williams, or freshman Howard Hilde. “With the right amount of breaks, head up plays, and a lot of hard work, we should be a competitive team again,’ forcasted Coach Chuck Wood. ‘The tradition along with the winning attitude will prevail.” Junior Varsity First row left to right: David Kero, Bryan Ratigan, Carl Ney, Dusty Rhodes, Jim Faust, Tom Layson. Second row: Gabe Dryden, Debbie Gauthier, Ted Woodard, Erik Hagman, Dale Bekler, Greg Rutledge, Wes Blankenship, Sterling Monroe, Coach Brunelle. A “good season” is what the J.V. Baseball team had, playing 25 league and non-league games. The team, made up of freshmen and sophomores, gained valuable playing experience i preparation for Varsity play in the future. There were many outstanding players, many of whom had to play out of their desired positions. This helped make the good season. At the beginning of the season the squad had more players than the 14 who finished. The players that stayed until the end of the season displayed their tenacity and willingness to improve themselves. They are definitely a credit to the school and Tahoma High School’s baseball program. 1. Scott Gordon hit a double to show the other team where its at. 2. Tim Acker displaying his sliding abilities. 3.
