Tahoma High School KI-AH-YU 1976 Dedication The 1976 KI-AH-YU is dedicated to Tahoma High School for 50 Years of Working Together. Since 1926 Tahoma High School (formerly TA-HO-M A) has stood through thick and thin, wins and losses, and always come out with a fighting spirit. Maple Valley is a very friendly community, situated in some of the most beautiful countryside anywhere. Our community and fighting spirit are something we are all proud of. From 1926-1976 T.H.S. has seen many changes. Fashons, fads, cars, all are much different now than they were 50 years ago. To emphasize these changes, pictures from past KI-AH-YUs have been placed throughout this annual to contrast with the pictures of today. To commerate America's Bicentennial Celebration we av vincluded the 1776-1976 end sheets and a special Bicentennial Salute. , 11 a | A ft 3 H ft f , Most of us were born free Not really knowing how hard life could be Always thinking our life was the worst Not thinking of those who came first They came to be free To worship and grow and build and live Not having to obey but still learning to give Their work, their lives, their heart, their soul. They never had the freedom we now know. These girls worked hard this year with bake sales, arranging the Reader Board, and putting up the activity calenders. But there was lots of fun too at the Mother - Daughter Tea, singing Halloween - o - grams, voting on girls of the month and having dinner parties. Julie Thompson led the way as President with Colleen Baird - Vice President, Candy Smith - Secretary, and Kathy Hood as Treasurer to help her out. Miss Porter was the advisor this year. This year Student Council accomplished such things as arranging for the King Co. Blood Bank to come so students could donate blood (total amount donated between students and faculty was 83 pints!). They also set up voting on Employee of the Month. Our staff was voted on such things as most fun to be with, jest dressed, best sense of humor, etc. Student Council also provided an opportunity for students to learn about, and practice parliamentary procedures, and how to run effective meetings. Other activities were selling doughnuts at K-Mart, a pancake breakfast, a skating night in Bellevue, and an Olympic sports competition. They also put on a great initiation for new members with all kinds of German sausages, cheeses and breads. Another German Club related activity was a trip made by six students from Tahoma and two from Renton. These eight students will tour Europe with Herr Rohm for one month during the summer. They were privileged in having Mr. Clem a student teacher from CWSC for their coach. When he was asked about the team, he responded: “1 was very pleased with the performances of the JV’s. They are the most enthusiastic guys I’ve ever coached! The JV’s improved greatly with each week and I expect them to make big contributions to the Varsity next year. They may not have scored a lot of points, but their hustle and defense made every game a close battle. These guys played with intense determination and they were fun to be with. I only hope they will continue to work and improve their skills. You can go a long ways on attitude and this group of guys had some of the best attitudes I have seen. 1 want to thank Tahoma and the players for making this an enjoyable season” JV Basketball Team Bottom row from left to right: Mike Sullivan, Jeff Leighton, Mark Aspelund, Garry Dickover, Bob Cutler, Mark Ryan. Throughout the season they gained both experience and confidence in their playing. Their season consisted of many losses, the games were close and lost only by a few points. The J.V.’s learned some of the tricks of the game and most of all the team learned how to both win and lose gracefully with sportsmanship and pride. For the First year Tahoma has had FIVE BRAND NEW TENNIS COURTS, which are some of the nicest in the Seamount League. The tennis team appreciated the new courts and made the most of them. The team members also received new warm-up suits. The team “ladder” was decided by challenge matches which enabled everyone including freshmen to work their way up to the varsity squad. There were many upsets and surprises from the challenge matches. The returning lettermen were Becky Childress, Pam Althauser, Brian Miller, Evan Morris and Mark Ryan. When Coach Rohm was asked to comment, he replied, “My goal this year is to see everyone play to the best of their ability.” At press time the team is full of old and new talent and should prove to be one of the finest teams Tahoma has had. 1. They practiced hard and late and had plenty of spirit and ambition. It was a successful and fun season for Boys’ Track. Highlighting the season was Jack McMaster’s strong individual effort. Officers were Mike Smith, President, Garry Dickover, Vice President, Nola Tres-ner, Activities Coordinator and Kathy Preedy, Secretary-Treasurer. Their first activity was a car wash, and they got rained on. Next they had a bake sale at Wilderness Village, and right next door the “Ladies of the Valley” had one too. “But the Sophomores still hung in there,” according to president Cathy Milette. The Class is already planning for their graduation party by opening a bank account. Other class activities were selling “sock it to 'em Bears,” buttons, a dance in the spring, and a raffle for a stereo set. “None of this would have been possible without the efforts of those who helped,” said president Cathy Millette. We’ve come to the end of another year. It was a special year, the Bicentennial and Tahoma's 50th birthday all at the same time (can you handle it all?). Cheer up underclassmen, it gets better! Ask any senior, when you’ve been through it, it all seems worthwhile. Just think of all the memories you’ll have after 12 years of school. Detention, tardies, unbelievable excuses (my pet lady bug died and the whole senior class had to attend the funeral). Seriously, you'll probably never experience a better time for closeness and friends in your life. Well Seniors, it’s been a good four years, but aren’t you kind of glad it’s over? Good luck and keep it up! The 1976 KI-AH-YU Staff, Evan, Sheila, Linda Debbie, Julie Janet, Terri, Pam, Alicia, Robin Tammie, Pam, Kim, Tammy Gail, Pauline and Robin. Many thanks to our Advertisers.
