The club is advised by Mr. Rohm and it’s officers are: Dan Beck, president; Cheryl Elder, vice- president; Michelle Coulon, secretary; and Rayne Feldman, treasurer. Baking pretzels after school for open house, going to Leavenworth, folkdancing, silk-screening T-shirts, and visiting Vancouver, B.C. were just some of the activities that helped to keep members busy and let them have a good time too. Everyone Smile! Herald StaVf Karine Reid Brenda Dickinson, Editor Diana Christensen Cindy Anderson Scott Sims, Sports Edito Larry Swetnam Kim WilliijPfem Maureen Doyle Centerfold: Kevin McLellan Annual Staff Inexperience, differing opinions, and dedication characterized the work on this year’s KJ AH YU. Neither the staff or the advisor had ever produced a high school annual before. All who worked on the staff appreciate the tremendous body of worth and cooperation it took to produce this publication. To begin the staff mounted a very successful sale of annuals. Their goal was to sell 600 annuals and was reached by the end of October. The staff also sponsored a dance in November which turned out to be a great success. This year’s staff was advised by Mr. Graham and was co-edited by Evan Morris and Sherry White Other members include Julee Schellhase, Becky Coffin, Michelle Coulon, Judy Saftich, Terry Rasmussen, Karen Freeman, Janet Ring, Sue Gamradt, and Kevin McLellan. 1. Sue Gamradt uses an old annual to identify unfamiliar faces. 2. Evan Morris tries desperately to think of a story for wrestling. 3. Becky Coffin searches for missing pictures. The newspaper staff worked tirelessly with the aid of Mr. Graham to meet the Herald’s deadlines. Editor was Harvey Knauss and Brenda Dickinson served as assistant editor. Their industrious efforts made each issue of the Herald possible. Kevin McLellan was responsible for all the photographs. Karine Reid and Larry Swetnam wrote many of the columns and editorials, including ‘Rock Notes’. Kim Willingham edited the front page, with the help of reporters Diana Christensen, Brenda Britton, Cindy Anderson, Judy Saf-tich, Michelle Coulon, Monica Conroy, and Debbie Roney. Typist was Maureen Doyle. The sports page was supervised by Sam Kerley and Scott Sims. 1. Sam Kerley proofreads sport’s story before typing. 2. Mr. Graham listens to the staffs complaints. 3. Kim Willingham displays his talents in doing a page layout. 4. Editor Harvey Knauss heads discussion on what stories should be covered in the next issue of the Herald Herald Staff Tahoma goes International For the first time in history a group of Tahoma students participated in an exchange program. Pictured on this page are: (beginning upper right, going clockwise) Phyllis Merklin, Cheryl Elder, Esther Dominquez, and Evan Morris. On the opposite page are April Preedy, Janet Tollefson, Scott Treick, Karen Freeman and Debbie Douglas. Esther Dominguez was our visiting exchange student. She came from Veracruz, Mexico and lived with the Wingert family. Esther stayed about half of a school year. She is already graduated from high school. She came to the states to learn English and see the world. (continued next page) All of the other students pictured are Tahoma students who went to Germany. Mr. Thom Rohm and Mr. Dietholf Zerweck, who participated last year in a teacher exchange made the arrangements. Karen, the only senior, left in January and returned in March so that she could be back for graduation. The others, all juniors, left together in March to return with their exchange in June. They lived in the Ludwigsburg area and attended Morike Gymnasium. FBLA New Club Has Active Year There was a new club around Tahoma this year, Future Business Leaders of America, FBLA. Club officers were: Lynda Hiett, president; Mike Wick- strom, vice president; Debbie Douglas, secretary; Lori Prinzing, treasurer; Cindy Kovarik, historian; Jackie Grant, reporter; and Ms. Mary Peters, advisor. The clubs first year was a busy one. Their first activity was a luncneon, hosted by FBLA members for area business men. Janie Sacco, state FBLA reporter from Kent Meridian, was guest speaker. Mr. Wasisco and Mr. Campbell also attended. Around Christmas time, members sold calender reminder notes in colored folders with “Dum Things I Gotta Do” printed on them, and stationary. During Vocational Education week, February 10-14, they hosted a guest speaker. Job interviewing was the topic of the speach. They sponsored a sock hop February 28. The money raised was used toward club activities in March and April. In March a Mini Conference was held at Mukilteo. Local competition was held in short hand, typing, book keeping and 10 key adding machine. On April 18-19 the State Conference was held in Ellensburg. The same type of competition took place, only at the state level. Members earned all expenses to attend the conference. This year the student body was led by Keith Kepler. Keith started his experience for ASB President by first attending a Leadership Camp during the summer in southern Washington. This gave him the opportunity to realize the responsibilities of an ASB President. During the school year Keith used these responsibilities to make this a successful year. He attended board meetings, organized Student Council meetings and kept them in order. He represented the student body at assemblies. Keith was active in football, wrestling and Super Bear activities. He was also given the honor of crowning the Homecoming Queen. Fantastic is just one word that could be used to describe this years’ Girls’ Volleyball team coached by Ms. Helen Shaw. They had an outstanding season record that surpasses any previoisly set by a Tahoma Volleyball team. Both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams were undefeated in league play. Jill Whitaker, Candi Smith, Dawn Dugent, Nancy Smith, Debbie Lamoreaux, Sheryl Getchman, Karen Clayton and Kathy Hood composed the team that competed in the Seamount League Tournament on Nov. 2. This team took first place at Tournament and went on to place first at District cormjetition on Nov. 7th and 9th. (continued on next page) L Candi Smith blocks an opponents spike. 2. Kathy Hood watches as Jill Whitaker and Candi Smith fight to save the ball. The tension mounted as the team prepared for State Competition on the 5th and 6th of November. On the 5th they defeated teams from University, in Spokane, and West Seattle. On the next day the girls suffered their first defeat at the hands of Ingram, who later placed first in state. Their second game was with Fort Vancouver, and they were defeated again. This made our team fifth in state. The girls practiced every day after school for about 2Vi hours, starting on the second day of school. Perhaps it was this, in combination with determination and a St coach that demanded perfection that led the team to ■ victory and such a record breaking season. Footba,, L0Qking ahead 86 The 1974 football squad escaped last place in the Seamount league by stomping Mt. Si, 34-12. Plagued with inexperience, inconsistency and no home or practice field, the Bears ’74 season was one of building. Some high points this year were Bear QB, Chris Erickson , being named number one in the Seamount League, and new uniforms for all. 1. Highlighting this year’s golf season was Marvin Motley’s hole in one. The shot was done during practice at the new Wilderness Ridge golf course. Marvin used a 9 iron on this sixth hole shot. Also adding to the season was the opening of the new Wilderness Ridge golf course. The full 18 holes will be completed next summer, promising to make this one of the nicest courses in the Northwest. Tahoma’s golfers were young this year. The membership included six freshmen, five shophomores and one junior. The team is looking forward , as all sports programs are this year, to the completion of the athletic complex. New golf tees are to be built at the north end of the football field. “This should add to theexperience and skill of next years team,” said coach Johnson. 1. Ted Ticehurst, a freshman on the team, con-sentrates on his shot. 2. Marvin Motley, a sophomore and one of two returning lettermen on the team, eye balls his shot. 3. Cross-Country Joj„ Jeam Females and new uniforms were the special attractions of the 1974 X-country team. Tne male team members finished third in the Seamount League meet, which for the first time, was hosted by Tahoma at Lake Wilderness Park. At the District meet, held at Evergreen High School, the men also made a good showing. They finished sixth out of sixteen teams, missing going to State by one place. Of the Seamount League teams participating at District, they placed second. Aside from the regular season meets and practices, the team took on two special events. The first was a moneyraising marathon, in which all total, the team ran 835 miles in 24 hours! The money raised in pledges per mile was given to the Super Bears. The second event was the annual road race. In the six mile race, Keith Hansen came out on top, Coach Sef was second, and Keith Kepler, a football player, was third. The team trophy was won by the Seniors. 1. Keith Hansen helps a fellow runner from Fife during the league meet. Keith was the 1974 X-country team captain 2. Finally, Keith Kepler popped a blood vessel in his ankle and missed 3 matches, but was healed up for sub. and district tournaments. Inexperience was a factor in the team’s season. Six sophomores, five juniors and two seniors made up the varsity team at tne end of the season. Some very inpressive individual efforts were made this year, despite tne team recoru. Bill Hodge, a senior, wrestling at 190 pounds, ended with a 31-6-2 high school recora. Dean Christiansen, a junior at 122 pounas, had a fine season, finishing with a 11-1-1 record. Kevin has given unselfishly of his time and skill in photographing the many school and community events during his high school years. Most of the annual and all the newspaper pictures were taken and processed by Kevin. No person in the community attended more school events than Kevin has. The quality of his work is indicated by the fact that his pictures are printed in several local newspapers and on the cover of a national magazine. Tahoma High will miss him, but we hope he will return to visit once in a while. 113 -.
