Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1968 volume:

TAHOMA KI-AH-YU Maple Valley, Washington 1968 Twenty-First Year TAHOMA HIGH IN 1968. . Another TAHOMA HIGH SCHOOL in 1968, along with the entire district, was the largest it has ever been in size, enrollment, number and variety of classes, and from any other point of view. The fact is that a new high school is in prospect for the district before long, and another grade level, perhaps the Junior High, will move into the traditional old building at the top of the hill. . . So in the 1968 Kl-AH-YU we have tried to take a good look--in story, sketch, and picture-- of a high school, which in a few years, may come to a turning point in its long history. Too much instruction both in die past and currently involves acquiring of knowledge in a restricted atmosphere. Our English honors and independent study programs represent attempts to provide for a less restrictive program. In die future, we hope to pro-vide more and more freedom for diose students who can use this freedom but still not abuse it. Many of our students will enter college following high school graduation while others will seek employment or enter the armed services. Regardless, my advice to you is to learn two most important diings, namely proper budgeting of your time and the development of good study habits. My best wishes to the graduating seniors of Tahoma High School. lyman D. stamper May your lives be most successful. Superintendent of Schools The students of today, the citizens of tomorrow, are faced with great responsibilities, which can only be met adequately with a good education. The paramount objective of each of you during the three short years of high school should be to obtain the best education possible within your individual limits. The competitive society in which we live demands more and better production from those who abandon the role of high school students each year and the students of Tahoma can and should be proud to stand among all others. The preparation available to you by competent teachers, understanding administrators, and School Board members will give insight into the problems of the world and help maintain our freedom. President Johnson once said, Freedom is fragile if the citizens are ignorant, and we at Tahoma know our citizens will not allow freedom to be fragile. Principal CHARLES C. Tahoma Junior Varsity, ’68 It wasn't the same team that tied for division honors in 1967, but this year's football squad had a fair season with a 5-4 overall record and a 3-3 league showing. The Bears tied for third in the seven team division. The story: SEPT. 15: In a non-league game, the Bears defeated the Tolt Demons, 34-6, at Auburn. The outstanding Tahoma performance of the game was Mike Davies' 85 yard punt return for a touchdown. SEPT. 23: Five key interceptions and 50 yards of penalities were the two major reasons for a stinging 28-0 defeat handed to the Bears by the Curtis Vikings at Auburn. SEPT. 30: Bill Furlong dashed off 121 yards in this one as Tahoma defeated Laughbon 15-0 at Auburn. OCT. 6: Another disappointment. Mighty Fife, which finished its division campaign undefeated, clobbered the Bears 30-7. OCT. 14: The Wildcats edged Tahoma 13-7 at Auburn. Mike Davies scored the Bears' touchdown and Bill Furlong added the extra point. OCT. 20: On a rain-splattered field at Foster, the Bulldogs nipped a stubborn Tahoma squad, 6-0. OCT. 27: In a home game at Auburn against Turn water the Bears came out on Top, 24-12. NOV. 3: The Bears traveled to Buckley and defeated the Hornets 12-6. NOV. 10: A 69-yard T a h o m a drive, including a 14-yard scoring run by Bill Furlong, won this one against Bethel, 6-0. PICTURE ABOVE: FRONT ROW: Mgr.
