See next page for description Twentietn Tahoma in Action This year's KI-AH-YU begins with a view of the sea in motion, continues with a partial picture of Tahoma's new library on the page preceding this, and follows through with scenes of a school in motion, all representing the theme of this year's KI-AH-YU--Tahoma in Action. It was indeed a year of action: new additions, new classes and projects, and continual progress toward the school’s goal of quality education. WEDEKIND Principal The school year of 1966-67 has witnessed many accomplishments at Ta horn a High School. Among these were the new library, new classrooms and facilities, our first co-championship football team in the Seamount League, and new programs such as honors English and independent study. The very best education has been provided for every student, and I sincerely hope that each one of you has gained a quality education at T a h o m a this year that will be of value to you for the rest of your life. I am happy to join with others in extending to the seniors our best wishes as you depart from Tahoma. May the years ahead bring happiness and success. We shall follow your futures with interest and will be pleased to welcome you if you can arrange to return occasionally for a visit. To your generation goes the greatest challenge in the history of mankind. In my brief lifespan, man has moved from the horse and buggy stage to the space age with its many complexities and demands for highly trained citizens. If you become qualified to live successfully in our ever-increasingly complex life, provide the leadership necessary to combat communism, and assist in the perpetuation of our democratic way of life, you must become highly trained citizens. Ascertain your interests and ability potential and make certain your training is commensurate. I extend my most sincere congratulations to the members of the graduating class of 1967 for the completion of the first phase of your education. My best wishes to each member for a most successful life. f Zt .A.11 Zs Superintendent 6 LYMAN D. Magnuson Visits Tahoma ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS of the school year was the visit of Washington State's senior United States Senator, Warren G. Magnuson, who addressed the Veterans' Day and Washington State Admissions Day assembly, sponsored by the Tahoma Honor Society. SOME QUOTATIONS FROM THE SENATOR'S ADDRESS Generations before us have had their responsibilities, my generation has its responsibilities, but yours will have even more. In the next 34 years we will have a complete new America on top of what we now have. Then by the most conservative estimates, we will have a population of 340 million. Everything built from the 1700's on will have to be doubled. Instead of one hospital bed, we will need two. Instead of one highway we will need perhaps six. There will be 160 million automobiles on our highways by 1995. I am often asked by students what the political issues will be five or ten years from now, and my answer is that they will be the things that we sweep under the rug today. We must face up to the problems of population congestion, the menace of disease, glutted freeways, and the killing of our people by automobiles. You have a good football team.. .and that's what this entire matter is all about--the spirit of competition in contrast to the suppression of freedom in the Communist controlled nations. LOWER RIGHT: Senator Magnuson is seen in Tahoma's new library. Others, left to right, are Mrs. Magnuson, Mr. Ziegner, Marcia Elliot, the Senator's niece, a Tahoma Senior, and Superintendent Lyman D. Stamper. (Top picture from Seattle POST-INTELLIGENCER; bottom picture from Renton CHRONICLE.) Plans included a one-act play to be given at an exchange assembly with Bethel and before local community groups that request it. THE HIGH SCHOOL'S new library (plus additional classrooms on the floor below and imporvements on the basement level) cost $204,000, but everyone think's it worth the cost. Individual study carrels and a partial view of the library are shown a t the left. STORAGE SPACE and workroom area in the new library nearly equals the space in the entire old library. Mrs. Willa Short, assistant librarian, is shown on the right in a very small portion of the workroom. Such a group is seen to the right. An adjacent room will soon be used for a listening room'where students can hear tapes of missed lecture lessons or other recorded material. ABOVE: Another view of the Tahoma library, showing the conference and listening rooms to the right. That's real carpeting on the floor. It deadens sound for classrooms below and in the library itself and enhances the library's appearance. School officials say that, in the long run, it's the most economical type of floor covering. SPORTS Tahoma Wins Seamount Co-Cliampionsliip ABOVE: Happy coaches Mr. George Makela, Head Coach William Maxwell, and Mr. Robert Carson receive the trophy for the divisional football co-championship in the newly formed Se amount League's opening season. By Doug McNair, Sports Editor, Tahoma Herald It was a good year for the Tahoma football squad's first entry in the new Seamount League. They tied with Fife for division honors and finished the season with six wins, one tie, and two losses for the best record in Tahoma football history. Four Tahoma seniors were named to the all-conference squad: John Foster as a first string running back and Walt Kilgore as a first string linebacker. Walt missed the first string quarterback spot by one vote. Joe Hagen and Joe Allard were given honorable mentions. Here's how it went: TOLT (Tahoma, 25-0) -- Everyone unloaded on the hapless Demons as the Bears gobbled up the first of many grid victims. Scorers were Bill Furlong with twelve points, Mike Davies with six, and Walt Kilgore with seven. Bears gobbled up the first of many grid victims. Scorers were Bill Furlong with twelve points, Mike Davies with six, and Walt Kilgore with seven. 72 Tlari 11s, Tears, Touchdowns CURTIS (Curtis, 40-0) -- The Bears playing out of their division matched the Vikings in running and passing, but five interceptions and two fumbles spelled the difference. Everything was even except the score. LAUGHBON (Tahoma, 24-12) -- Down 14-12 at the half, but still controlling the game, the Bears dumped the Panthers in the second half, using the one-two scoring combination of Kilgore and Foster, who scored two TD's each. FIFE (Fife, 13-6) -- TheTrogans, who later went on to beat North Thurston for the Seamount championship, didn't get their title shot without a scrap from the Bears. After nearly three quarters of scoreless grind, Dave Abbey ran an interception 35 yards for the Bears' only score. The Trogans roared back in the fourth quarter with 13 points for the win. MT. SI (Tahoma, 13-12) -- The previously undefeated Wildcats saw the start of a new TIIS football strategy - -guts . Ignoring a 12 point deficit, the Bears pulled off a heart-stopping fourth quarter victory with TD's by Mike Davies and John Foster, and a boot by Bill Furlong. FOSTER (Tahoma, 32-7) -- Thebestteam Tahoma’s ever had said Bulldogcoach Dick Hussleton, former THS grad, after the Bears had just smeared his highly rated team 32-7. TUMWATER (Tahoma, 13-12) -- With 37 seconds left Walt Kilgore snared a T-Bird pass atTHS's 10-yard line to save his own game. Walt also plunged for both TD's and passed for the PAT. For his performance Walt was picked as Seamount back of the week. WHITE RIVER (Tahoma, 7-2) -- After almost four quarters of slugging it out in the fog with one of the best defensive teams in the league, the Bears rallied for seven points, sending Mike Davies across for the winning score. BETHEL (Tie, 7-7) -- In their last bout of the season, the Bears tied the Bethel Braves, 7-7. Tahoma's tough defensive unit really came to the fore, repeatedly stopping the Braves within their own ten. Walt Kilgore really unloaded the bombs, his best to Mike Davies for a 47-yard run. It all ended with a banquet at the Swept Wing Feb. 6. Besides awards, at the LEFT, Jim Gay was chosen most academic player (3.37 GPA), Jim Bell, most improved player, and Dave Smith, most seriously injured. Dave had his arm broken early in the season. V. Football This year's Junior varsity football squad came through with at least a respectable season, winning two games, losing four, and tieing one.
