Career Contents TITLE PAGE - - CONTENTS --- ADMINISTRATION - - FACULTY - - SENIORS - - ORGANIZATIONS - - CLASSES - - SPORTS ---- ADVERTISING - - 3 4 If you were to study a time line, you would discover that man existed for tens of thousands of years before the wheel was invented. Several thousand years later he trained the horse to speed up his travel. Then in the last one hundred years he has developed the locomotive, the autombile, the airplane, and in the last TEN years he has broken the sound barrier and orbited in space. Soon man will reach the moon. As we look into the future, our school faces a role, second to none, in preparing you for your endeavors. In fact, with these rapid developments, today's high school education will not be adequate for tomorrow's . . . Principal world — you must continue to learn. Flight engineering, a job created during your generation, is already obsolete while new jobs, many that you have never heard of, are being created each year. Every minute of your learning experience in school is of paramount importance. Our staff is doing a better job than ever before, and you are realizing your tremendous responsibility for QUALITY EDUCATION. ALBERT F. WEDEKIND Office Staff MARLON WEIDE and Her Office Girls Carol Sorenson, Bonnie Nickel, LaDonna Dufenhorst, Janet Becklund, Karen Wood, Cheri Sheets. 6 Educators agree that the purpose of education is to train people how to live properly. You realize, of course, that on the high school level we can only provide the basic foundation or the first step of the process. How successful your life becomes, depends almost entirely upon the completion of your training with further vocational study or work on the college level. In the highly specialized world of today, the demand for non-ski lied labor is almost non-existent. In order to insure your own personal happiness as well as preserve our democratic way of life, it is imperative that you prepare yourself to the best of your ability and to the highest degree possible. It is my sincere wish that you will accept this challenge and become well-trained citizens of the future. LYMAN D. SUSAN CERMAK ZIMMERMAN ♦ Senior Class Officers ABOVE: Bill Vermillion .... Vice-President Ronda Petersen .... Secretary Shirlee Read .......... Treasurer KEVIN VELEKE President Sorry, no Senior picture for KEN SCHWAB 31 Senior Class History TO START us off with a bang, we elected Russ Herman, president; Bob Codiga, vice-president; Lonnie McKittrick, secretary; and Kathy Herrin, treasurer. Mrs. Herrin and Mr. Ryan were our advisors. - - - As the last Freshman class, we were the last to have to prove ourselves to the Seniors. We did so by giving them a winter hop. - - - Other activities included a car wash and participation in the Band Mothers' Carnival. - -We also volunteered our labor to help complete the track and football field. - - - Something to remember our Freshman year by: 1500 word autobiographies for English... TO CARRY ON through our second year we elected Henry Yeackle, president; Roy Garrett, vice-president; Judy Hynes, secretary; and Brian Christie, treasurer. Mr. Isaacson was our advisor. - - - Among our activities were participation in the Carnival, which was held to raise money for football lights and our first annual class picnic at Lake Retreat. Our primary money raising project was a successful pen sale. - - - Something to remember our Sophomore year by: the first time we had to spell Sophomore at a pep rally... AS PRESIDENT, Sid Copeland, with the capable assistance of Kevin Veleke, vice-president; Nancy Weber, secretary; and Larry Lindenmayer, treasurer, led us through our Junior year. Mr. Tollefson was our advisor. - - - We knew our time was running out when we chose our class flower and colors and decided on our ring. We picked red and silver for our colors and the red rose for our flower. For the class ring we designed one which became Tahoma's traditional ring. - - - We sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom for the Seniors, and thus re-established it as a tradition at Tahoma. - - - Something to remember our Junior year by: our class meetings in the lunchroom... WE WERE BROUGHT through our last year by Kevin Veleke, president; Bill Vermillion, vice-president; Ronda Petersen, secretary; and Shirlee Read, treasurer. Mr. Gates was our advisor...Our activities this year included participation in the Carnival, sponsored this year by the new Parent-Teacher-Student Association, and our Senior play, Come Out of Your Coma, which was a tremendous success, both financially and otherwise. We were also honored by the Juniors at the annual Junior-Senior Prom. We finished the year and an era with a cruise and an all-night party sponsored by our parents...Something to remember our Senior year by: all those classes that interfered with our other activities... We have had four eventful and rewarding years at Tahoma. We started with a new principal, Mr. Neil Helgeland, and ended with a new principal, Mr. Albert Wedekind. We were the last Freshman class, witnessed the last graduation in the auditorium, became the first to have graduation exercises in the new gym, and, finally, became the first class to graduate with 100 students...Yes, it has been an eventful four years, but now we must look into the future. It is up to us whether the future years will be as eventful and rewarding as the past ones. The object of all chapters shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of the secondary schools of the nation, states the National Honor Society Handbook. Founded in 1921, the NHS now has nearly 14,000 chapters in schools across the nation. The national office is located in the National Education Association Building in Washington, D.C. A scholastic average of at least a B must be maintained to be a member. Character, leadership, and service are also considered. Members are chosen by faculty representatives. Once a student is dismissed from the NHS, he is never again eligible for membership. Officers Darry Weide, President Barbara Wolder, Secretary Larry Lindenmayer, V. President 41 This year a new constitution set the qualifications for letterwinners and the club officers. Also a policy was established that only lettermen may wear Tahoma jackets. Initiation the annual banquet, and a lettermen's dance were the highlights of this year. For the second year new lettermen were inducted by initiation. It is hoped this will become a long-time tradition. The annual banquet was held in May after the spring sports. The dance, also in May, was for lettermen and their dates only with the proceeds going to the athletic fund. Bob Codiga, Secretary Joe Gauthier, Vice-President Roy Garrett, Treasurer Dan Petchnick, President 42 Mr. Maxwell, Adviser Girls’ Cl-u.t The main purpose of the Girls' Club is to develop character and leadership in Tahoma girls. The Girls' Club sponsors four main events during the year—the Girl of the Uonth, the Tolo, White Christmas, and the Mother-Daughter Banquet. The Girl of the Month is selected by a committee of two sophomores, two Juniors, and two Seniors. The Tolo was a huge success. The theme for this year's dance was Dancing Lightning. The purpose of White Christmas is to collect food, clothing, and toys for the needy in the area. A fashion show and the installation of officers are the features of the Mother-Daughter Banquet, held annually in May. Officers Linda Bell, treasurer Carol Byers, vice-president Cherie Sheets, president Nancy Weber, secretary LaDonna Dufenhorst and Carol Wilsco, historians Girls' Athletic Association, c better known as GAA, is open to all Tahoma High girls• This year there have been many organized games of volleyball, relays, basketball tournaments, and almost anything the girls wished to do. In the future the GAA girls plan to go bowling and have a playday with a GAA Club from another school. Ending the years of '63-'64 the girls hope for the annual caapout over a week-end at some attractive place in the Puget Sound area. Besides the club projects, this year's Science Club visited the atomic reactor, the Geology Department, the Medical and Science Buildings, and the Fisheries Department at the University of Washington.
