Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1961 volume:

PROGRESS was chosen as the theme for the 1960-61 KI-AH-YU because of the completion of the new addition to the Tahoma High School. Pictured above is a view of a portion of the older part of the school. Shown below is the new portion. Students and patrons are now enjoying the modern facilities of the campus appearance of the new Tahoma High School. Included in the addition are the administrative, science, and health units; a music building; gymnasium and dressing rooms; and agriculture and wood shop buildings. 1 3 Ad manager, Brian Crain; co-editors, Shirlee Pottle and Eileen Codiga; business manager, Sally Bergsma. annual staff As members of this year s annual staff, we have worked hard typing, pasting, and selling ads to put together a good annual. Our thanks go to Mr. Ziegner, for his valuable assistance; Mr. Ken Pottle, for supervising our lay out; and Mr. Gerard, Mr. Harta, and Richard Weide, for their splendid photography. Our theme Progress” is obvious with the addition of many new buildings to Tahoma High School. We hope, as you look through this annual many years from now, you will fondly remember the year Tahoma took on a new look. Mr. Ziegner Athletics contents Annual Staff.......................... Dedication............................ Administration......................7 Organizations........................ Activities Seniors Classes Advertising To express our gratitude for the many years of service she has given Tahoma High School; for her kind understanding as a teacher and a friend, we proudly dedicate this edition of the KI-AH-YU to Miss Anna Borgeson. Before coming to Tahoma, Miss Borgeson taught at Concrete and Renton High Schools. She attended Washington State College and the University of Washington and holds a life certificate for teaching. With deep appreciation we dedicate this, the 1960-61 KI-AH-YU, to Miss Anna Borgeson. dedication 6 administration superintendent Survival through Education is a slogan we must all adopt. Only by raising the educational training level of our citizenry, can we hope as a nation to perpetuate our democratic way of life. In acomplishing this end, our government will be better able to successfully combat the evils of communism. I challenge the seniors to seek further training, enabling them to become better trained citizens of tomorrow. I challenge the undergraduates to avail themselves of their educational opportunities so that you will have a better foundation for the task ahead following completion of your training in Tahoma High School. principal You now go out to meet the challenge in life which now includes the far reaches of the universe. Meeting this challenge will be determined by the extent to which you understand that this graduation is not the end of your education. I take this last opportunity to implore you to continue to study and learn and educate yourselves privately, for there is now great urgency to make more efficient use of our resources, of which YOU and our students to follow are the greatest. With that plea, I extend my personal best wishes to each of you. Sandy Thorlton Treasurer Cathy Wilke Secretary Dianne Burton Vice-president Jim Kraft President senior class history We started our high school years at Tahoma High School dressed as storybook characters and scrubbing the halls with toothbrushes. This was, of course, our initiation which entitled us to join the mad rush. Leading us through our freshmen year were Larry Petersen, class president; Gloria Bergsma, vice-president; Christine Paris, secretary; and Sherrie Hunter, treasurer. Many of us participated in various activities, one of which was the All-School Play, Smokey Mountain . We ended the year with a picnic at Spring Lake. During our sophomore year we witnessed the last freshmen initiation to be held at Tahoma. Douglas Huse was elected class president, being ably assisted by Will Rodwell, vice-president; Vernye Hunt, secretary; and Nena Torre, treasurer. Again we ended the year with a picnic at Spring Lake. Our junior year was very eventful. Led by Pat Loveless, president, we participated in the Junior-Senior Banquet held at the Towne House; and the Junior-Senior Prom, Cloud 9 . We sponsored several money-making projects to prepare for our senior year, such as a car wash and a pie auction. We ended the year with a bang with our annual class picnic, this year, at Lake Sammamish. At last we have finished our senior year! We have seen Tahoma take on a new look , not only with the addition of new buildings, but also with a change of administration. Our class officers this year were Jim Kraft, president; Dianne Burton, vice-president; Cathy Wilke, secretary; and Sandy Thorlton, treasurer. In January we presented Bull In A China Shop , a 3-act mystery, comedy, under the direction of Mrs. Harriett Judge. It concerned a detective and a boarding house of old maids, who are lonesome and want a man, so they pick on the detective who lives across the street from them. The cast included Brian Crain, as Detective First Class O'Finn, Terry Hennessy as Kramer, his assistant; and Shirlee Pottle as Miss Hildegarde, the owner of the old maids boarding house. Other members of the cast included Ethel Read, Joan Lawson, Gayle Gauthier, Bette Becklund, Dianne Burton, Gloria Bergsma, Richard Weide, Delvin Laugen, and John Dunlap. 59 Detectives O'Finn and Kramer bull in a c SENIO Ladies watch as stretcher bearers carry away corpse. Each of the classes sponsored one sock hop after basketball games. For Homecoming, they each had a task to do; the juniors put on the spagetti dinner, the sophomores advertised the Homecoming dance, and the freshmen were in charge of cleaning up. Each class pitched in to help in the Band Mothers Carnival by sponsoring a booth. 64 i Nikki Bain Barbara Baker Deanna Barnett Charles Benedict Nancy Benson Sue Brady Mike Brown Gary Bunning Bob Buster Howard Carlson Dan Chavre Harrv Collier Ron De Leon Celia Dougherty Wes Duren Joanette Gauthier Ben Gingrich Nancy Glenn ■ Eileen Graham Bridget Greer Kay Hagen Royann Heimbignei Marie Holder Chervl Huse John Johnson Darlene Jones Cassandra Klnkead Joanne Kobe Ron Krall Don Krall 65 A1 Landln Rosanne Laugen Bob Marlatt Sue Markham Mike Melton Sharon Miller 66 Bob Moore Terry Morris Jake Myers Carol Neff Stan Olin Nancy Pease Chuck Phillips Marsha Pichinini Nancy Pottle Marietta Richardson Jim Roach Sam Rodwell Dianne Romberger Paula Shore Rick Shimono Patty Spurlock Alan Swanberg Sue Ann Tetirick Bill Toman Patty Van Ausdal Hester Vernor Jim Youngblood Not Shown: I Dave Moffat Kerrie Streeter Everett York Roslyn Ashley Bob Benedetti Vicki Bennett Carol Bewley Francis Bittner Betty Bittner Tom Wolder Stephanie Young sophomores Joel McNair Treasurer Stephanie Young Secretary Bob Benedetti Vice-president Suzy Johnson President Richard Bradley Jim Brundage Kay Buell Bill burroughs Ted Busch Loren Carleton 68 Wanda Daley Marcia Devereaux Jim De Leon Sandy Di Martino Paul Donaldson Gary Donnelly D'Ann Dufenhorst Janet Dunlap Frank Edwards Susan Fisher Dusty Flint Myssie Gerard Dick Giancoli Lance Gooden Eileen Hennessy Dick Hoffer Rusty Holder Linda Johnson Nancy Johnson Suzy Johnson Diane Jones Sandy Justiss Penny Kelley John Kraft Bob Lawson Kathy McDonald Joel McNair Bob Marshall Delores Martineau Francine Maxwell Iva Michael Angela Miller David Morris Bill Nation Janet Nelson Barbara Nieman Marion Niemela Roger Paris Jay Petersen Joyce Ponchart Richard Rohweder Linda Romberger Glendora Saviers Judy Schiller Mike Scott Shari Scott Tony Seppi Bob Shearer John Shelman Laura Sherrard Dennis Shimono James Sigmon Carl Smithburg Wayne Sproat 69 Judy Sutcliffe David Toman Jerry Trumpour Kathleen Turk Bill Vernor Phil Walsh Ken Wilson Not Shown: Linda Long Alan Meek Rozanna O’Dell Phil Philio Pam Thompson Martin Winter Barbara Woldeit Bob Woldeit freshmen Robert Codiga Vice-president John Torre Sgt. of Arms Kathy Herrin Treasurer Russell Herman President Lonnie McKittrlck Secretary Mike Garrett Sgt. of Arms ff rosh Back row: Ray Shaw, Stan Szweda, Ed McDonald, Dave Toman, (middle row): Donna Klier, Randy Kramer, Charles Carlson, Nancy Smith, James Dolezal, Henry Getchman, Steve Szweda, (front Row): Gerry Burton, Toni Junevitch, Ed Heemink, Charlotte Aanerud, Terry Junevitch, Shirley Hagen, Carol Sorenson, Cathy Churchill Front row; Don Berg, Emilie Kowalski, Leslie Spencer, Roger Willis, Henry Yeakle, Betty Anderson, Terry Johnson, (middle row): David Shore, James Collier, Danny Petchnick, Judy Hynes, Betty Clemmens, Lonnie McKittrick, Ed Bartley, (back row): Sid Copeland, Bob Codiga, Jim Neff, Larry Lindenmayer, Barbara Wolder, Ron Burnett, Richard Peacock, Marsha Kimball, Gene Moore, Danny Smith 71 irosh Front row: Brian Christie, Bonnie Nickell, Jane Boyd, Don Glenn, Myrna Bradley, Jane Applegreen, (middle row): Kevin Veleke, Gilda Traylor, Kathy Herrin, Mary Hill Pam Turpin, Loretta Hetland, Paula Skiff, Joan Holder, (back row): Shirlee Read, Darryl Weide, Colleen Dougherty, Mike Fletcher, Connie Litras, Roy Garrett, Richard Nyberg, Kathy Maxwell, Dick Lobdell, Carol Byers, Linda Stevens, Gordon Fisher 72 Front row: Danny Jones, Ronda Petersen, Richard Ford, Karen Thorlton, (middle row): Barbara Winter, Gloria Booth, Steve Markham, Karen Wood, Joey Gauthier, (back row): Chuck Young, Russell Herman, John Torre, Harvey Thompson, Bill Fite, Mike Garrett • y v GOOD LUCK CLASS OF '61 Where the Best Dressed Babies Shop Infants Through 14 Maternity Wear HOBART FOOD MARKET AND COLD STORAGE LOCKERS Groceries - Meals - Feed - Gas 233 Wells St. Renton, Wash.
