Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1959 volume:

FOREWORD We, the editors of the 1959 Ki-Ah-Yu, invite you to walk with us, down Memory Lane, Remember with us your classmates and your friends, your teachers and your classes. Remember with us the feeling of satisfaction that accompanied a well-written theme, of a successfully completed experiment, or a winning goal in the last seconds of play. Remember with us the small defeats and victories, the arguments and friendships, the hard work and the fun.for these things are so much a part of youth and growth ani learning. It is our sincere wish that a you turn these pages you will say, wt us, 7 Reaeaber. Come with me, and walk a way Down the Lane of Yesterday. Flowers beside the path are springing, With their perfume, memories bringing-Thoughts of all those years gone by When we loitered, you and I, In the garden fair and sweet Of life's springtime, full, complete; Days in the long-ago, 'tis true, But Memory guides our steps anew. So, come with me and walk a way Down the Lane of Yesterday. - Alice C. Sutherland 2 AH- YU 1959 Tahoma High School Maple Valley, Washington 3 DEDICATED... To the memory of Mr. Lloyd H. Priebi, who left, in passing, a legacy of kind understanding, keen insight, and solid conviction. We will not soon forget his efforts to awaken the mind of youth to the meaning of yesterday in order that it might give itself with greater discernment and devotion to the future, to entice the eager seeker into new and larger fields of knowledge, to goad the laggard mind to do at least that which it must, and to handle a job as large and demanding as that of Superintendent of Schools, with discretion and understanding. All these are not small things. But to do them, as Mr. Priebe did them, with a warm, friendly handshake, and an open invitation to drop in at his office, deserves tribute. Mr. Priebe will long remain in our memories as a respected and well-loved friend. God bless his memory and his service. ANNUAL STAFF The annual staff, Diane Codiga, Dolly Lodraell, and Janet Bertagni, is shown here in a discussion with the advisor, Mr. Ziegner. The board room was headquarters for this year's annual. Many long hours were spent there, typing, pasting, dummying, and worrying: another deadline to meet, copy to be sent to the printer, and advertising space to be sold...so many things to be done, and so very little time. The staff wishes to extend sincere thanks to Mr. Ziegner for his valuable help and advice, and to Mr. Jensen for his photography work. Diane Codiga co-editor Dolly Lodmell co-editor Sponsored By: FASHIONETTE 916 3rd Ave AL 5-3636 Renton, Wn. FACULTY The world today is involved in a great competitive struggle for survival. Educational training becomes increasingly more important with each moment of passing time. The challenge is clearly Issued to you, our students of today, who are the destined leaders of tomorrow. To the Seniors: Seriously consider fur- ther training, either vocational or college ....better training today means a stronger America tomorrow. To the Underclassmen: Insure your opportunity for additional educational training by developing good study habits which will serve as a good foundation for the future. Competition has never been greater which means you must put forth to the utmost if you are to be successful. Superintendent When in later years you look back Memory Lane, remember you were in school when shooting at the moon became no idle fantasy and commercial jets hopped from New York to London in six hours and when every pampered child had his own hula hoop and knew how to use it. Schools were revamped with much greater emphasis on academic study and you suffered because you had to endure the sputnik-caused transition period. We trust, however, that some of the school-imposed discipline may have made the more stern realities of life somewhat easier for you to bear. May you be successful, useful and happy; thus reflecting honor on your teachers, your parents, and your Alma Mater. f Principal Donald L. Arbogast Wood Shop Drawing..Gen Science..Adv. We’ll have to wait until next year’s annual to give credit to those who finally made this year’s team. At any rate Tahoma boys have a lot of fun with baseball, and put in a lot of hard work as well. Now as this day approaches, our mind s eye looks backward over Memory Lane. Remember the first time we entered Tahoma? Our feeling of expectancy was mixed with awe and momentary bewilderment. 60 of us knelt at the feet of the mighty seniors during initiation, and drank tall glasses of delicious, frosty liquid - wasn't it raw eggs? At our first class meeting we decided on our officers for the year. Bob Schaffer was elected president, Ron Vernor vice president, Dolly Lodmell, secretary, and Jo Anne Berg, treasurer . We adopted as our class flower red roses, as our class color pale blue, and as our song The Halls of Ivy. Our ciass motto is, Have a purpose in life, and having it, throw into your work such strength of mind and muscle as God has given you. Y c held, as freshmen, a return party for the seniors in the form of a dance, Heartbreak Hotel. TIre freshmen class was well represented in the All School play, a comedy, 'flic Perfect Idiot. Also much freshmen talent was visible in the variety show, Showboat. We ended our freshmen year with a class picnic at Lake Retreat. Y e returned as 57 mature sophomores with Gary Edwards, Rudy Petchnick, Jo Anne Berg, and Betty Burton holding up the executive part of our class. Mr. McNair was our adviser. The all School play, a drama, Years Ago was cast with several sophomores. As sophomores, many of us held offices and were active in other clubs and scholastically our class was well represented in the Honor Society. During the very cold winter of 1956-57 we took advantage of the freeze to hold an ice-skating party on Lake Retreat. We returned to Lake Retreat in the spring to hold a class picnic, our last sophomore function. We will never forget our junior year, for as upperclassmen, we had at last found a place in the sun. Our members were active in other school clubs and high, in honorary achievement. Many of our boys held important places on the varsity squads of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. The All School musical, Smokey Mountain featured many of the junior class members. Looking back over Memory Lane, we find that our senior year has been the year of years. The senior play, You Can't Take It With You, brought the seniors together to enjoy the activities of the rest of the year with a more united spirit. The pie auction and the senior car wash netted the class money with which to help finance the Junior Senior Prom, Gateway to the Stars,” which was a magnificent clima;: to the winter's social life. As seniors, we realize that wo will never sec many of our classmates again after graduation; yet our memories will keep them forever near, and as we look back over Memory Lane we will recall with nostalgia the Grand 0 d Class of '59. 79 Mrs. Haas, di a bouquet of the play cast 'r, receives roses from • . s %• « « •'« I %' mt- . s jNi : • • 9
