TaHoMa's Bear was given a name this year in the columns of the student newspaper. Journalism students dubbed him TaHoMa Teddy. The 1953 Annual is dedicated to Teddy and to those many memories of work and fun which he brings to mind. In the pages to follow, we, the Annual staff, invite you to retrace the steps of Teddy's trip through the school year of '52 and '53. stcu(f Editors -- Marianne Sandhei, Beverly Dziedzic Art Editor -- Don Fisk Business Managers -- Wayne Huselton, John Saftich Copy Editor -- Eileen Meek Adviser -- Mj Wm. PRIEBE Su„ erintendent A m e a Aa 9' To the Class of 1953: For the past four years of your high school education we have attempted to provide the best of facilities and to create a desirable environment for learning. We hope all of you have attained your full measure of learning and that your life will be much happier and your ideals much higher than they were at the beginning of your high school experience. In years to come when you finally attain your desired station in life, we trust you will be able to attribute many factors of your well-being to TaHoMa. Principal W, eAAaye The year 1952-53 has witnessed quite a change in the curriculum as well as the appearance of TaHoMa High School. The building program has provided us with a splendid, well-lighted woodshop abundantly equipped with power tools. We are now able to offer a more varied school shop program. The plant expansion has also provided us with a large new classroom which will be used by our new full-time English and Journalism instructor, Mr. Ziegner, to stimulate a greater interest in these subjects. We are pleased, too, that due to the addition of Mr. Duxbury to our staff we were able to add a foreign language to our course of study. We regret that our graduating seniors could not have had these facilities for a longer part of their school life. However, as we build our school bigger and better, may they have greater reason to be proud of their Alma Mater. OREN C. JENSEN 5 BETTY J. CRAWFORD University of Washington Geography, Girls' P. As we look back it is with regret that we didn’t fully appreicate those carefree years at the time we lived them. We started out enthusiastically enough in our Freshman year with twenty-nine members. A little of this enthusiasm disappeared after the Seniors sponsored the Freshman Initiation party on Nov. 15, 1949. Still we forgave them and gave a return party in Feb. 1950. A class picnic at Lake Wilderness closed the year for us. The end of every school year since has been highlighted by a class picnic. Class officers for the year were: President, Ronald Iverson; Vice President, Marianne Sandhei; Treasurer, Beverly Dziedzic; Sargeant at Arms, Ray Prescott. Helping us over many rough spots was our adviser, Mr. Riffe. As we began our Sophomore year the members numbered twenty-six. This was one of our busiest years. At the All School Carnival our contribution was a dart booth which made the most money for the school. For this we received a prize from the S.B. A. Our skating party held at Lake Wilderness, Dec. 6, 1950 was a huge success. Our class was well represented in the All School Play, Grandad Steps Out . Jack Downing, Chuck Berry, Carole Patterson and Marianne Sandhei were cast in roles. Our officers for this year were President, Beverly Dziedzic; Vice President, Paul Woodard; Secretary, Dolly Grady; Treasurer, Don Fisk; Mr. Riffe again bravely agreed to be our Adviser. We returned twenty-four strong in our Junior year. Our outstanding event of the year was the Junior-Senior Ball held April 25, 1952. The Theme was April In Paris. The effect was electrifying and those of us who attended will never forget it. It will be something to tell our grandchildren. Our Junior, Chuck Berry, was elected King of the Ball. Again our class was well represented in the All School Play, Arsenic and Old Lace. Ronald Iverson, Chuck Berry, Melvin Mooers, Don Fisk, Edna Casterline and Marianne Sandhei brought honor to our class. Our officers for this year were: President Chuck Berry; Vice President, Don Fisk; Secretary, Marianne Sandhei; Treasurer, Virginia Smalley; Miss Borgeson was our Adviser. Eighteen hardy survivors returned to begin the Senior year. The Senior-Junior Prom was held March 20th, 1953. We danced to the theme of Moonlight and Roses which will be in our memories for years to come. For weeks we worked diligently on The Perfect Idiot and produced it successfully, April 17. Then came Graduation. Thus the curtain falls on one part of our lives. What lies ahead no one can predict. Perhaps in one of our seemingly modest little group the seed of greatness lies sleeping. Only time will tell. And so goodbye to school days at TaHoMa. At least the years we spent here are among the happiest we will ever know. 16 JOAN FLINT DALE HUSELTON DELORES GEE TRUMAN HART WAYNE HUSELTON 19 uniors DALE KOCHEVAR KEN METZ NEIL RIHBE RAY MAXWELL BILL PANGBURN SHARON READ LES JOHNSON JOY PHINNEY PAT SANDHEI LEON SPROAT DON TAYLOR DOLLY THOMPSON WALLACE SCOTT FRANK THOMPSON TAMMY WRIGHT NORMA TOMAN JIM TWEDT CARMEN WILSON The class of 54 entered high school in September of 1950 where they were greeted by a lovely Freshman Initiation. Days, and many washings later, they still had green hair from it. That year they drew up a constitution and chose their class colors and flower -- blue, silver, and a carnation. They gave a Freshman Return party, a movie dance called Freshman Frolic” and a play entitled Tillie's Hero. In their Sophomore year they discovered themselves to be reduced in number but still full of ideas. They gave a Sophomore Hop movie dance, with a Dog-Patch” theme. In September of 1952 they came back even smaller in number. They put on a skating party in the early fall and then proceeded with the plans for their Junior Prom. unior Offi. leers Pat Sandhei, Dolly Thompson, Wayne Huselton, Kenny Metz, Mr. Ziegner. 21 MARGIE ANDERSON JERRY BODVIN RAY COLLECCHI DELANO FARDIG LORRENE JOHNSON PAT BOUD LORRAINE COVEY CAROLE IVERSON C. Under the capable leadership of their president, Marianne Sandhei, the club had a very successful year. Opening the schedule of activities was the Tri-County Girls' Club Conference at Bellevue. The four delegates and their advisor came back with many new and different ideas for club improvement, a lot of which were put into use. A new custom inaugurated this year was that of the weekly Regulation Day. The highlight of the year, though, was the sponsoring of TaHoMa's first Basketball Homecoming. Among their other activities were a slumber party, the raffling of Dick Linge, popcorn sales at games, a tolo dance, and their Mother-Daughter Banquet. 30 JILL SMALLEY Historian Homecoming Royalty RON IVERSON President MELVIN MOOERS Vice-President CHUCK BERRY Secretary The Boys' Club re-elected Mr. Moore for their adviser this year, the third straight time. A turkey was raffled at Christmas time, a party given for the Girls' Club on Valentine's Day, and a popular intramural basketball tournament sponsored. The Club also raffled Sharon Brinkmeyer, or, rather, a date with her. Chuck Berry was the winner.
