Second Row: Arnold Dotson, Bob Shewbart, Aldon Hodge, Lowell Townsend, Freland Cook, Billy Joe McNac, Frank Smith, Jack Keys, William Dry, Dale Connors, Kenneth Phillips. Coach Francis Ford's baseball team of 1954-55 was not expected to win over four or five games but they proved these expectations wrong by having a ll-4 record. Not seeming to be satisfied with this record they bestowed three trophies on Tahlequah Senior High, CNOAA Conference Champs, Regional Champs and Runner up in the NSC Tourneyl, and became the second team in our history to compete in the state semi-finals. Starting seniors of the l9 man squad that year were third base, Dale Connors, left field, William Dry, first base, Lowell Townsend and shortstop, Gilbert Osburn. Other senior squad members were Freland Cook, Don Ogle, Bob Shewbart and Aldon Hodge. Gilbert Osburn, hard-hitting shortstop, was more or less dubbed the 'Babe Ruth' of the Tiger team by knocking seven homeruns for the season. Three of these were hit out of four times at bat on home ground in a state play off game against McAlester. Lowell Townsend, mighty first baseman, walked off with the highest batting average of .500, it was one of the highest in the state. Lowell was also named Outstanding Player of l955 by his team- mates and named on the All-State Baseball Team.
