Bliss Dr. Tom Graham Board of Education Chief among the factors for making our school life at Tahlequah High a success are the adminis- tration and faculty of this beloved institution. The workings of these dedicated men and women, who have mode it their business to mold the lives of youth for the future, will be immortalized in the achievements which lie before us. Mr. Jones, who for fourteen years as superinten- dent of schools has given his all for the betterment of the school and the development of the individual, has secured o place forever in the hearts of his students. While being here but one year, Principal John Lain has soundly established himself through the progressive advancements he has brought ci- bout. Never to be forgotten are all the teachers, spon- sors, and counsellors who constantly were giving their thoughtfully sincere love and understanding as well os their wisdom and knowledge. To them, we keep the hope that someday we too will be as helpful. MR. O. W. JONES MR. JOHN W. LAIN Superintendent of Principal of Tahlequoh City Schools Senior High School MRS. For twelve years, these upperclassmen have trod the long iourney through public school and now have come to the milestone in every progressive student's life, the embarking into the new, outer world. ln about as many years, the seniors of today will be the leaders of tomorrow and the success of that leadership will be partly insured by the gains made in the humble halls ofTahlequah High. The success of the class of '56 during their sophomore year was perhaps only moderate. But now, however, the seniors hold a distinct position over that of their other classmates. While their past mistakes will be beneficial as a footlight of caution for the lowerclassmen's progress, their achievements, serving as a starlight of challenge, will be treasured much more. With graduation, all seniors may understandably look back on their last year and whole high school career with a moistened eye and grateful heart, realizing the advancements they have made because of the high associations they had. As they march into the future, having had Tahlequah High in which to grow, the class of '56 may well have great expectations indeed! Joe Dell Rust, President, Judy Carlile, Secretary, Jack Johnson, Vice-president, Arnold Dotson, Treasurer. Like time, life goes marching onl Since Tahle- quah high is stationary in one sense, its graduating seniors must be replaced with undergraduates who will perpetuate the lofty traditions, and ideals left before them. The iunior class members, following in the footsteps of their senior friends, are com- petent of fulfilling their inherited responsibilities. Much in evidence is the capacity for noble things in these iuniors. Their talent of progressive lea- dership seems to be endless and is only surpassed by the steadfastness in its followers. This group has continually shown throughout the school year their high potential in their character, activities, and scholarship, which, exemplified in the past, has made Tahlequah high one of the foremost among schools. The underclassmen, however, are not looked upon as iust those who will return next year, but as youth destined for the future who too must move onward with time. Therefore, the tasks they will soon attempt will also prepare them for a greater role in life - which they are sure to take, as well as setting an outstanding record in school - which they are certain to make! They are N. J. Evans, Vice-president, Jack Keys, President, Vera Sowder, Secretary, Carol Cashow, Treasurer. Having a spirit of optimism are the members of this year's sophomore class. This quality has been helpful in the successful adiustment of these young people to new surroundings. Even though they were new to Tahlequah High, the sophomores have shown the deep love they possess for the school, plus the fact that their possibilities are unlimited through the outstanding part they have taken in school activities. Certain- ly, they are one of the finest sophomore classes ever to have come to Tahlequah High. ln their cheerful attitude and thoughtful actions, they have won the firm respect of their upperclass- men. We look to this class for many accomplish- ments - that when the torch is handed to them, they will rise to the call and carry on with the same spirit and success as those who have gone before them. Like other schools, Tahlequah High realizes that its students must be developed in all areas of life. They should not receive an education alone but also be able to use fully their abilities and feel the ioy of successful living with others. To that end, many activities are offered to the student body of various types for the different individuals. Receiving them with zest, the boys and girls from all the classes have found them beneficial in addition to being simply fun. The ioys, the serious moments, the new friends made, old friendships strengthened, the lessons learned, the inspirations shared - all these, valua- ble assets we have gained whose sources will always remain a lasting memory. Such origins of expression and impression as the band, the annual, the class plays, the student council, FFA, FHA, and FTA have come to mean much to those who actively supported them, yet will increase in value as the years go Tahlequah High students should be proud of their school for providing the many activities it does, and in appreciation, should make full use of the advantageous opportunities which lie in them. As we look over this past year of our school life, the summary of its highlights would not be complete without an adequate recognition of one of the forces which has made our life at Tahle- quah High memorable. The athletic department has nobly served the school in two distinct ways. First, it has helped those youth who havebeen participants in its sports. Being a necessary factor to a person's happiness, health and a strong physical condition have been strongly stressed throughout the program. Also the ability to co-operate with others and the realization of the ioy it brings, the ability of fair play, of training and discipline are lessons learned by our athletes. Secondly, it has played an important role in bringing a united spirit to the school. Who could ever take away the moments when Tahlequah High, as a group, cheered its teams to victory or accepted proudly the trophies of courage, sta- mina, and citizenship won by its sportsmen? Yes, as always in the past, the athletic seg- ment of this school year has been a vital one and much applause is in order for the coaches, parti- cipants, and supporters for an outstanding per- formance. At the close of their gridiron career they had a 6-l-3 record. Following the pattern set by last year's Tigers they went to the finals of the NOAA Conference. They were beaten out in an exciting game at Stilwell T4-l2 by the larger Stilwell lndians. The Tigers wound up with four men on the All Conference football team. They were halfback, Russell Glory, quarterback, Joe Kirkwood and center, Steve Foreman. Sophomore tackle Lewis Green gained admittance to the All Conference second team and sophomore fullback, Frank Smith received honorable mention. The Tiger captains were Bill Bliss and Russell Glory. Coach Francis Ford's baseball team of 1954-55 was not expected to win over four or five games but they proved these expectations wrong by having a ll-4 record. Not seeming to be satisfied with this record they bestowed three trophies on Tahlequah Senior High, CNOAA Conference Champs, Regional Champs and Runner up in the NSC Tourneyl, and became the second team in our history to compete in the state semi-finals. Starting seniors of the l9 man squad that year were third base, Dale Connors, left field, William Dry, first base, Lowell Townsend and shortstop, Gilbert Osburn. Other senior squad members were Freland Cook, Don Ogle, Bob Shewbart and Aldon Hodge. Gilbert Osburn, hard-hitting shortstop, was more or less dubbed the 'Babe Ruth' of the Tiger team by knocking seven homeruns for the season. Three of these were hit out of four times at bat on home ground in a state play off game against McAlester. Lowell Townsend, mighty first baseman, walked off with the highest batting average of .500, it was one of the highest in the state. Lowell was also named Outstanding Player of l955 by his team- mates and named on the All-State Baseball Team. Tennis 1' in K Y it t ' K X 97 si . ,. gf Z! jk ,,,-,-s .-fi, ,., T , 1'1'1 V ki? .
