These were the words of the Taft High representatives who were chosen by the American Legion to go to Boys' and Girls' State. The delegates, who were chosen for their good scholarship and qualities of leadership and citizenship, were first assigned to various cities. Bonnie Jason, who went to Davis Campus, became post-mistress of Carson City, Larken County. Richard Brasher, who attended Boys' State at the Sacramento Fairgrounds, held the post of city councilman of Sloat City, Long County. Jeff Brown was on the Election Board in Donner City, Long County. The program ot the conferences was based on Americanism, and much of what was discussed will always prove invaluable for those who attended, Jett Brown x 'W W-'ff f N xii? ,f N A-f ff 214, X , . --,.3, vi , - fh,1.L,, .. ,W ., . HENDRICKSON R. BEEBE K. MATNEY l23 C HB FB D. COLE R. SKINNER T .P VARSITY Upsetting pre-game predictions in their first contest of the season, a determined Taft eleven literally ran the Wasco invaders into the ground with a score of 24-7. Both the line and the backfield sparkled with the promise of what was to come later in the season. The Wildcats then traveled north to meet the heavily favored Delano Tigers. Surprising everyone but them- selves, Taft defeated Delano 18-12. Again it was the fine running of the backfield and the excellent block- ing of the line that kept us ahead on the scoreboard. On Friday, October 13, the Wild- cots lourneyed to Hanford, but the date did not faze the varsity eleven. When the final gun boomed, the score was 19-6 in favor of Taft. A spirited, underdog Taft team once more upset the odds-makers by defeating Garces High Rams 27-7 in their fourth non-league game of the season. Although the Wildcats were a ground team in their first two games, they now took to the air for all four touchdowns. ACTIO With four non-league victories to its credit Taft High was ready for the first league game. The defensive line held the Blades to only 7 points, while the backfielcl brought the Wildcat score to I4 points. For the first time in eight years the Wildcats had defeated the EB Blades. The Taft rooting section displayed its appreciation with great enthusiasm. ln one of the most exciting games of the season the Wildcats defeated the North High Stars T4-l3. Sal- yards and Dickson reached paydirt after receiving excellent blocking from the line. The final score was continually in doubt as the line of scrimmage wavered back and forth over Wildcat and Star territory. With one play left in the game the Stars attempted a ten yard field goal. The Taft side of Martin Memorial Stadi- um went wild with joy and relief when the kick missed by a matter of inches. In a heart-breaker for Taft fans the Saint Francis Knights defeated the Wildcats T3-O. This ended a six game winning streak. Although Taft held the ball most of the time, the Knights capitalized on several of our mistakes. The line should be con- gratulated on its excellent defense. The Wildcats went to South High assured of at least a tie for the SYL Championship. They played to wing however, this was not to be. The final game of the season was lost 20-9 .... Salyarols and Dickson, among others, turned in excellent performances throughout the year. In a fine display of teamwork the Wildcats defeated the highly favored Arvin Bears 63-58 in the final game. The games were well- played and were often decided by the narrowest of margins. To most fans, the South High and E.B. games were the most exciting games of the season. ALMA MATER Hail TUHS, steadfast and true, Our Alma Mater, colors gold and blue Faithful and loyal, for you we will fight- fight-tight We'll bring you victory emblems of our might Song Leaders: Lynn O'Brien, Judy Toel, head, and Bei Ezell. Taft HigI'i's Sweetheart! R LLY COMMISSIO Left to right: Sandy Ezell, Ed McNeal, Jill Hare, Commissioner, Eileen Graupmon and Karen Schroeder. This year the Rally Commission has done a great deal of work for our school, but as usual, much of it has gone somewhat un- noticed. The Rally Commission was responsible for the decoration of the goal posts and stands before each game. They also intro- duced our schools iii cheerleader, little Anne Kelly, and was in charge of the Homecoming Breakfast Rally and all the schools Pep Rallies, The Rally Committee certainly did its job to promote school spirit, which was the best the Old Taft High bleachers have experiene ced in a long time. Congratulations, Rally Commission and all the loyal Taft rooters for the support of our team in 1962! Big Bod Ralph! Who are you hiding behind the sign???? Jill and Mike??!l I69 Jack . . . The experience of working with a staff of people with different personalities, habits, and back- grounds has been rewarding in itself, but we take special pride in having had the privilege of being able to serve our school in a very responsible position. We would like to thank each person who was involved in the production of this year's annual, especially Mr. DiNiro, our advisor, and Mr. Walker, our photographer. It is our sincere hope that when you look through your Derrick in years to come, it will bring back many happy memories. ilsl lQl Maize QQ veils mm if X, HC. c Pg F Xi J QMF 1962 Derrick l Nc ll be N g JK. , L 544 Ill, 1' 9' Nl f lg'-ri 'f sflffzmw f l9I OUR WINTER WONDERLAND ,,' 4 J Q Q LQDD N.
