The Wfildcats won the championship in the South Yosemite League, and proceeded to higher honors by defeating Edison High School of Fresno to become champion of the entire San Joaquin Valley. The junior Varsity team Won the top spot in its league as well. Not all of us were like Shakespeares whining schoolboy, with his satchel and shin ing morning face, creeping like a snail unwillingly to school when the doors first opened for classes this year. After the dragging days of the fag end of summer, we were glad to get back into the school routine. In accordance with tradition, on Freshman Thursday the upperclassmen had their day. The frosh were subjected to insults, lipstick smears, peanut pushing, hall crawling, and other such mild tortures. After suffering through the initiatory rites, the world looked brighter to the frosh at their reception. The customary orderly confusion when we signed up for classes, voted for officers, and learned new route patterns for our steps to different classes soon gave way to 11 familiar arrangement of daily activities. The halls were crawling with frosh when the GAA initiated its new members. 'X' ,fl lkbii c ti., as mlm -IQ - El' 12.5 l 'E' . in Msg . . The Wildcats, a smaller team than usual, improved rapidly as the season progressed. Ripping through Wasco, Garces, and Shafter, they played their best game of the season at North High. Beating North High for their fourth straight win, the Wildcats were perhaps a bit over-confident the following week against the East Bakers- field Blades. The Blades, league cham- pions, sneaked by the Wildcats in a very exciting and well played game. Kaseball Due to the length of the basketball season, inasmuch as the championship game was a post-season game, baseball got a slow start this year. It is difficult to think about starting baseball practice when an all-important basketball game remains to be played, and when some of the best candidates for positions on the baseball squads are still hitting the cords. As a result Coaches Reedy, Romuld and Harrell had to start late in developing their respective teams, so that it is likely that the season will be a constantly improving one for Taft as the teams become more seasoned and as the addition of members of the basketball teams give a better rounded lineup. , l i l l f :gmt .1 . Swimming Many league honors were won last year by one of the most outstmtling swimming teams Ttift High has ever had, Many firsts were taken in all tlasses in Southern Yosemite League nompetition. The 1956 team shows equal promise and will untloulvteelly do L1 fine job in bringing us victories. ,Ln Grey. lfaulkner, liasham. Furtney. Grey. 605 Although the turnout has been rather limited this year, the golf team shows signs of having a few individual stars. Tom Faulkner, one of Taft's better golfers in the last few years, plays consistently in the low 8O's. Also indicating some promise is Mike liurtney, who has played on the second team all his years in high school. The loss of Bill Smith, a constant 70's golfer, has hurt the team considerablyg however, Coach john Mello is highly pleased with the team as a whole. In its first match the team was soundly beaten by Bakersfield High 29 to 7. The scores: Verhaag QBD def. Faulkner QTQ, 6-Og liurtney QTD def. Kling 4-23 Carr CBD def. Grey QTj, 6-og Cross QTQ tied Smedley QBJ, 5-3g Horan CBJ def. Weatherly' LTD, 6-0. Mr. Mello coaches the team. First row: Mahle, Neuman, Smith, Reynolds, Finkleman, Scarborough, Sherman, Putnam. Second row: Rivers, Ritzius, Mills, Haller, Romuld, Stevenson, Pruiett, Pruiett. Third row: Updyke, Ford, Oberdorf, White, Eardley, Bailey, Walsh, Dodson, McWilliams, Harps. Zkuuis This year's tennis team promises to come through with flying colors. Win or lose, Taft will be well represented in every match, and there will undoubtedly be many victories on the record sheet at the close of the year's play. In the first game of the season, the girl's team defeated North High, 4-1. In the doubles matches, Barbara Mahle and Susan Putnam won their match, 6-3, 6-2, and Barbara Ritzius and Sharon Reynolds won, 6-2, 6-2. Marjorie Neuman lost by the score of 2-6, 2-6 in the singles match she played, while Paula Rivers won her match by the scores of 10-8, 6-2. Janice Smith also won her match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Our boys' team lost to North by a close 3-2 score. Roger Bailey and jim Eardley lost their doubles match, 4-6, 0-6, and Jim Oberdorf and Dick Ford lost a tight match by the scores of 4-6, 6-4, 3-6. Dick Walsh won by the scores of 6-1, 7-9, 6-4, and Richy White won by 6-3, 8-6. Miss Buss coaches the girls' team, and Mr. Kennedy the boys. am xx ealthy m my frxcnds Immun Lf Atilnns .41 13 ..- QZPIEEQ 3 FNS' i - l ' .. ,- I ..- x ' P X K .. ,L ' x 1 t x X .r x - J . 4 ' K - W I 1' .A ' 1 - 4 , , - ,H ' , I .J 1 s Q L l Q 1 V ' I I 5 , l it o -.- ' J 4 1 'E -, - K.
