JOHNSTON Disfrict Szzperinlendenf In the years to come, the yearbook of 1954 will revive a lot of pleasant memories and associations for the members of the student body of Taft Union High School of the school year 1953-1954. This book represents a tremendous amount of work on the part of the staff, the advisor, and the students themselves. You are to be congratulated on a very fine job. Sincerely, EUGENE M. Some of you -may some day fly through space at hundreds of miles per hour and, though you travel for a life-time in one direction, you would not reach the outermost star. Our physical world is limitlessg your vocational opportunities are also limitless. Your goals and your achievements are limited only by you. Within you rests your future and ours. Not only do they assist them with academic curriculums, but they also help their coun- selees with problems that arise in everyday life. We realize the importance of having people understand our needs, and we take this opportunity to thank them for all they hafve done. Headed by Linda Foy and Sherry Flake, these girls led the Taft Hi rooters in some top-notch morale building. The pointers the girls learned at a school of instruction in Bakers- field early in the year paid off in better and more spirited yells. Dave Hollingsworth raced 60 yards with a Wasco fumble for the Taft score. The following week, Archie Schmitt put on a spectacular exhibition at Garces in scoring three TD.s to lead Taft to a 19-13 victory. In the last game before their league season started, the Cats', hammered out a close 14-15 win in a hard-fought game with the Shafter Generals. The Wildcats, dark-horses of the league, and under- dogs against Delano, trailed 21-0 at the start of the fourth period, but they scored 27 points in that memorable last quarter, and they put on a comeback that many football fans considered the greatest they had ever witnessed. The Cats downed Porterville 27-7 in a game highlighted by long runs. Hedd COW-HARRY KANE- The Taft club looked past this game to the follow- AU A and ing weekend when they would meet the E. B. Blades 'Sm'-ROLLIE GILLIAM in a game which would undoubtedly decide the league championship. The fired-up Cats reached an emotional peak for the game with the Blades, and ripped through their vaunted defense for 31 points while the Blades could only score once until late in the game when they added two more TDs making the final score read 31-19. This game cost Taft its stellar Quarterback. Rollie Gilliam, who suffered a broken wrist. Trailing 15-6 at the half, the Wildcats scored 28 points in the second half to defeat Tulare 54-28. Archie Schmitt tallied 28 of the markers. A rugged I Edison team stopped the tired Cats in Fresno the following week 12-0. rM,2 f' 11', J j ,ff -X Las. To Top row: J. Bledsoe, D. Ackfand, S. Although Taft later lost its bid for the Valley Championship against Roosevelt High, it had won the first A class league championship since 1946. In spite of the fact that the Cats dropped the easy ones, they won 12, lost 9, and finished well in the final league standings. The start of the season found the Xllfildcats open- ing with a pair of wins over Garces. Unable-'to click in their next two games, the team was dumped by Filmore and Santa Paulag but they bounced back with wins over Xlifasto and Paso Robles on the coast team's home floor. A loss against a mediocre Shaf- ter team ended the Christmas holidays for the team. The following week found the team opening its league season against a highly regarded EB. quintet. This game was probably the most thrilling of ilte year with the underdog Wfildcats winning by one point in a blazing finish. The following weekend proved successful as the Wildcats defeated Arvin and non-league opponent Wasco. The high- light of the season occurred with the upset of league champion Bakersfield, the third startling win of the year. Winding up their season, the Cats dropped a game to Tulare after the exhaustive battle with Bakersfield. Bob Hampton, center, was consequently chosen all- league, and Trice Harvey and Don Coker made hon- orable mention. Other consistent performers were David Ziel, Rollie Gilliam, Bob Bubp, and Boyd Cole. GENE SQUIRES Center A 'gr 'Q' gl ,Q U71 , ,Vi z-. li' if 5 .Q A..-1 A Q 13 S gn 1 .f K I 4 6? 1. 8 7 5.
