I-I. MCCALIB mama' am MR. LAURENCE RITTER We have dedicated this Derrick to Mr. Laurence Ritter for his able and willing assistance to the students during his twenty-one years of service here at Taft Union High School. All the dance programs, bids, concert programs, and other printed articles that we students have to remember our school activities by were made by Mr. Ritter. He stood up very well under all of the problems that were dumped in his lap, especially last minute work. So to you, Mr. Ritter . . . thanks, for a iob well done! THE DERRlCK STAFF DMI ISTR T10 1. JOHNSTON District Superintendent cqbmiwleadewt' The most important administrative position in this school district is held by Mr. Eugene M. Johnston, District Superintendent. Together with a hard-working Board of Trustees, Mr. Johnston has unobstrusively and efficiently taken care of the many problems of school administration which came up during this past year. Although most students are not aware of the work of the District Superintendent, were it not for Mr. Johnston our schedule of school activities would be much less smoothly organized. Much praise is due Mr. Johnston for his steady behind-the-scenes activitiy. Through the cooperative efforts of the Student Body, Faculty, and Jerrick staff, this book has been made possible. Naturally, most of the work has been done by the Derrick staff, its Editor, and Mr. McCalib the Advisor. These people are to be congratulated on the fine piece of work. The yearbook serves as a storehouse of memories of what, we hope has been a pleasant year of high school education. The Derrick will become more valuable to the individual as the years pass. The student will be able to recall fellow stu- dents, happy memories, pleasant associations, and many enjoyable activities. The present yearbook is no exception, and l am sure all will enioy the book. ganna! af fuoaleec EUGENE M. JOHNSTON District Superintendent Left to right: George E. Martin, Eugene M. Johnston, W. T. Woodward, William 1. O. Erickson, Carl F. Roeder, Fred lsbell. 1 PAUL C. SMITH HELEN LOCKWOOD Supervisor of Attendance Dean of Girls The democratic process has been continuously emphasized during this school year. Not only has this been true in the classrooms as we studied civics, govern- ment, and related topics, stimulated by the presidential election, but it has been practiced by our students as they revised their own Student Body Constitution. After many months of serious consideration, the Ad Board presented an up-to-date constitution which was approved by the students. As the colonists in l789, some approved the constitution only with the knowledge that it could be improved by amendment. Again, as in the case of our country's history, several amendments have been presented for vote, some of which have passed while others have failed. This whole process has demonstrated the desirability of change not by revolu- tion but by evolutionfpeacefulethoughtful changefchange by rnaiority decision and according to rules and regulations, democratically adopted. CLAIR W. JOBE Principal During this, his second year at Taft High, Mr. Clair W. Jobe, Principal, has quietly and effec- tively directed the necessary day-by-day func- tions of the high school. Much credit should go to Mr. Jobe for his understanding advice to the Ad Board-advice which made possible the suc- cessful revision of the Student Body Constitution during the first semester. Finally, in a large mea- sure, Mr. Jobe is to be praised for the guidance and advice he willingly gave to help any student in need. msg Sn.. FENTON L. FEENEY Director of Guidance The counseling statt ot Taft High has the important job of guiding the students in their choice of courses and planning their future careers. When the students have personal and social problems they can feel free to go to their counsellors to seek advice. We, the students of Taft High take this opportunity to thank the counselors for their Wonderful iob in helping the students. Probably the piece of work for which he should be given the greatest amount of credit is the steering of a new Student Body Constitution through the many uncertain currents and eddies of debate both within the Ad Board itself and outside of it, among the students of Taft Union High School them- selves. DON SCALES First Semester Student Body President This careful steering, which allowed every article and clause to be thoroughly discussed from every viewpoint before action was taken, was so highly success- ful that the students finally accepted the new constitution offered them by their Ad Board almost without any real opposition at all. Supervised most capably by Mr. Claire W. Jobe, high school Principal, the members of the Ad Board learned-and constantly practiced in many, many situations-the democratic ways of give and take which lead to true civil re- sponsibility. Ad Board members for the first semester were Don Scales, President, Ted Switzler, Vice President, Donna Livingstone, Secretary, and Dick Henning, Busi- ness Manager. Class Representatives were Jack Wagner and Juanice Watson, Seniors, Janie Woodward and Jim Nabors, Juniors, Don Kessler and Patty Liv- ingstone, Sophomores, and Becky Finkleman and Otto Newton, Freshmen. SECOND SEMESTER As the tirst girl to be elected Student Body President since Patricia O'Brien in i939-and only the second girl ever to serve as T.U,H.S. Student Body President, Mary Shepherd was unusually able to inspire cooperation and enthusiasm. Mary moved directly to the top stu- dent iob from the office of President of the Girls' Ath- letic Association and had previously held offices in various school clubs. Her scholarship record has been MARY SHEPHERD outstanding, proving that gracious manners, good grades, and a warm personality are recognized and rewarded-in Mary's case with the Student Body Presi- dency. Second Semester Student Body President The Second Semester Ad Board helped arrange more and better assemblies. ln addition, they carried the problems and solutions ot student government di- rectly to the students through a blanket invitation to the social science classes to attend various Ad Board meetings. In this way, many more students came to understand student government than previously, Second Semester Ad Board officers were Mary Shepherd, President, Willie Schmitt, Vice President, Myrna Robertson, Secretary, and Jim Ferniman, Business Manager. Class Representatives were Sudy Peavyhouse and Don Scales, Seniors, Sarah Coleman, Don Coker, Juniors, Sherry Flake and Johnny Ratliff, Sophomores, and Denny Dykes and Otto Newton, Freshmen.
