Tho Taft Annual LIVINGSTON P. CARROLL Graduating from Taft School Cum Laude in 1937, Mr. Carroll was a monitor, captain of wrestling and golf, on the Debating Team, and vice-chairman of the Papyrus News Board. He was on the golf team for three years, wrestling for two, on the T.A.A. and inter-club Councils. Graduated from Yale in 1941, while GERALD NELI.IS LAGRANGE, A.B., M.A. Matlfemfztiar Prepared for college at Utica High School and graduated from Hamilton in 1936. There, was in Delta Upsilon and received honors in mathematics and public speaking. Played freshman baseball and -basketball and varsity football. Also received the Fowler football award. Studied in Cornell Law School for a yearg then took courses at Columbia Teachers' College. Taught one year at the Darrow School, New Lebanon, N. Y. and four years at Rye Country Day School. Came to Taft in 1943. there he won his numerals in wrestling and golf, went out for dramatics and was chosen to give an oration at his commencement After six months at Yale Law School he came to Taft in the spring of 1942. Served in the Armv 1942 45 receiving the Purple Heart and Silver Star for gallantry in action RODERICK BEEBE, jr., B.A. PAUL L. LOVETT-JANISON, B.SC., MA PhD Head of Science Deparlmenl Was graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1925, receiving the B.Sc. as well as the Diploma in Education. Was Science-master at the Ranmoor and Greystones schools, Sheffield, for four years, Sixth-Form Master at The Bishop Field College, St. john's, Newfoundland, for four years, and eight years as Professor of Chemistry at the Memorial University College, St. john's. Has acted as Scientific Assessor to the Newfoundland Government since 1933. Was a member of the Council of Higher Education in New Foundland. Attended Columbia University summer sessions 1931-1939, and for the year 1939-1940. In 1933 he received an M.A. degree in Chemistry, and a Ph.D., in Bio-Chemistry in 1940. He was elected to the Sigma Xi honorary society in 1940. Came to Taft in the fall of 1042. Playricx Prepared for college at Taber Academy. Graduated from Yale in 1933, where he made J. V. football, basketball, and baseball and was a member of Psi U. Taught math and science at the Indian River School, Smyrna, Fla. for two years, then at Montclair High for three. Came to Taft in 1943 after four years of teaching at the Cincinnati Country Day School. l94I5

The Taft Annual JOHN FRISBY MORSE, B.A. Regirzfar Prepared at Kent for Yale, from which he graduated in 1935. While at Yale he was a member of Calhoun College and Alpha Chi Rho, and during his Senior year was a member of the University Golf Team. He taught for two years at Romford School before coming to Taft in 1957. WALTER ROTAN ' Aft Was graduated from the Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts in 1929. Attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts 1930-1933. He exhibited at the American Water Color Society, the Chicago Art Institute, the Corcoran Galleries in Washington, the Pennsylvania Academy Exhibits, the Cincinnati Museum of Art, and the Arden Galleries in New York. He is also represented in the permanent collection of the Brookgreen Gardens Museum and is an associate member of the National Sculpture Society. He came to Taft in the fall of 1938. GEORGE WERRENRAT1-l,B.A., M.A. CHARLES ARMISTEAD COIT, B.A. Latin and French After preparing for college at the Gilman School in Baltimore and the Taft School. he entered Yale University in the fall of 1935, graduating in the class of 1939. While at college he played intra-mural hockey and baseball. In his senior year he earned a scholarship at a French University but was unable to take it because of unsettled conditions abroad. Came to Taft in the fall of 1939. Served in the Army 1943-46. Frenflf and Sfmniila Was prepared for college at Tabor, where he graduated in 1929. He went on to Dartmouth, where he received his B.A. dgree in 1955. He then went to Middle- bury. where he got his M.A. degree in 1940. He comes to Taft after six years of teaching experience at the Park School in Buffalo, at Culver, and at Northwood. He also spent two summers teaching abroad in France. Came to Taft in 1941, where, besides assisting in soccer and track, he has become coach of fencing Served in the Army 1943-45. 1946

The Taft Jlnnual KENNETH C. PARKER, A.B., M.A. Spamirla, French Went from Eaglebrook School and Deerfield Academy to Middlebury College, graduating in 1931. Was a member of Pi Delta Epsilon and Delta Upsilon. After a postgraduate course at Columbia for an M.A. degree, went to the University of Paris for one year on a Dutton Fellowship scholarship. Taught one year at Topslield High School in Mass. and nine years at Friends Academy in Locust Valley, L. I. before coming to Taft in 1943. HENRY BEAUMONT PENNELL, A.B. Hixzory, Mazhemazicr Prepared for college at Romford. Then entered Williams, graduating in 1943. Was a member of Chi Psi, and played Freshman football, basketball, and track. Also made J. V. football. Came to Taft in 1943. Malhematicr, Latin JOHN EDWARD KINGSBURY BA JACK TREVITHICK, B.A., M.A., Ph.D. A graduate of Taft in 1932 and Hamilton College in 1936 While at Hamilton played on the soccer, hockey, track, and tennis teams, and was a member of Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity. From 1936 to 1943 was associated with the Crouse Hinds Electrical Manufacturing Co. Served on the Board of Directors of Syracuse Junior Chamber of Commerce 1939 to 1943, Returned to Taft in 1943. Engliib Took his BA at Trinity College in 1931, where he was awarded the Mary A. Terry Fellowship. Attended Harvard in 1932 and received his M.A. degree. From 1932 to 1940 he taught English at Trinity, and meanwhile took his Ph.D. at Yale in 1939. He was for four years an assistant professor of English at the Citadel. Came to Taft in 1944. 1946
