Haslings Govin Tearse The Taft Annual Football Review The I945 fooTbalI season aT TafT wiIII go down as one of The Ieanesf, from The sTandpoinT of vicfories, in a number of years. In an ambifious seven-game schedule, TafT emerged The winner only Twice, defeafing Wilbraham 20 To 6 and Kenf, before a large FaTher's Day crowd, I9 To 7. The mediocre record of This year's eleven came as no surprise To The coaches or school. In one of Those siTuaTions ThaT somefimes exisT in every school, TafT o ened This fall wiTh no IeTTermen on The squad. Every member of IasT year's Team gradTJaTed in June wiTh The excepTion of Fred Miller, ca Tain-eIecT, who enTered miIiTary service iusT before The opening of school This fall. Tlzfie l945 Team had To be buiIT from The ground up around boys who had had IiTTIe or no varsify experience. Ted Herrlinger, a fullback on IasT year's J.V. Team, had played a few minufes of varsiTy fooTbalI aT The end of IasT year's season. So, Too, had Two J.V. Iinemen, Harry CrafTs. guard, and Larry Munson, end. BuT ThaT was all. In view of The shorT Time available To Them before The opening game, The coaches eIecTed To sTay wiTh TafT's TradiTionaI single-wing formafion for one more season, aT leasT, since mosT of This year's squad had played club fooTbaII under This sysTem. As The Team evenTuaIIy was worked ouT, iT consisfed largely of under-classmen. The regular cenfer, Two guards, Two Tackles, Two ends, and Three backs were all Upper Middlers and one guard was a Middler. Only Coffin, a Tackle, Munson, an end. Marschall, regular four-back, Herrlinger, Three-back, and Howell and Means who aITernaTed aT one-back, were Seniors. This siTuaTion leads To high expecTaTions for nexT fall. TafT hiT iTs peak in The KenT game and played iTs besT fooTbaII of The season. The firsT half found TafT Trailing 7 To 6 in an evenly played conTesT. Kenf came from behind wiTh an 80-yard march sTraighT down The field To score iusf before The half- Time whisTle. IT was The IasT Time ThaT They could gain consisTenTly, however. The second half was all TafT. The passing aTTack did noT accounT for as much yardage as iT had in The Wilbraham game, buT once again iT was The passing which seT up The running plays. There were cerfainly no individual sTars on This year's Team. Ted Herrlinger proved To be a fine leader and a capable plunging back. He played consisTenTly hard foof- ball ThroughouT The season and was seldom Taken ouT of The game. Larry Munson was parTicuIarIy good on The offense and was on The receiving end of mosT of TafT's compleTed passes. OuTsTanding defensively, AI PeTers proved To be a reliable block- ing back on The offense and on a number of occasions KurT Marschall proved To be a good break-away runner. WhaTever success and failures The Team experienced This year were The resuITs of The Team play, however. There were no players who sfood ouT as sTars and none who sfood ouT as goaTs. In many ways, as Coach Jerry LaGrange poinfed ouT before The KenT game, The Team improved more Than aImosT any Team we have had in recenT years. STarTing ouT as a group of inexperienced, IighT, young players. iT developed by The end of The season inTo a well-coordinaTed, respecfable, if noT ouTsTanding Team. FOOTBALL SCORES TafT O .... .. . High school opponenfs of- fered fhe sfiffesf compefifion and adminisfered fhe only fwo defeafs suffered in nine games: fhe oufcome of fhe confesfs wifh all our prep- school rivals was very safisfacfory. The opening game on Ocfober sixfh wifh Lifchfield High was a hofly confesfed, overfime fie. A vicfory over Waferfown High on Ocfober IO was offsef a week lafer by defeaf af fheir hands in fhe refurn game and by fhe permanenf eliminafion from fhe lineup, because of iniury, of Lou Bissell, who had shown promise of being a fower of sfrengfh on fhe offense. The game af Cheshire was an easy vicfory, followed by a win over Choafe, our oldesf rival in fhe sporf. Neifher of fhese games was a real preparafion for Ocfober fwenfy-firsf's confesf wifh Seymour High's confidenf, veferan eleven who clearly showed fheir superiorify over Taff. The nexf game, wifh Hofchkiss af Lakeville on November fhird, was a hearf- breaker. Wifh five regulars ouf because of illness, Taff losf a one- goal lead in fhe second overfime period wifh only a few seconds fo play and had fo be confenf wifh a fie. Loomis was beafen handily on fhe home field, and a final game wifh Hopkins was anofher walk-away for fhe Red and Blue. An alerf Jayvee feam played an inferesfing fhree-game schedule, winning over Forman af home, losing fo fhem af Lifchfield, and losing gamely fo a sfrong Kings- wood Varsify. The Varsify's main offensive sfrengfh lay in fhe fwo inside forwards: Jay Peef, a hard. fireless player on fhe righf, and Mario Belli, high scorer, who fook over Bissell's place on fhe leff. Capfain Al Ward did an excellenf iolo af cenfer half, assisfed by Ed Couch and Dick Palmer af his leff and righf. Fullloacks Warren Bean and Fred Shorey ably defended fhe goal area: while Noel Fehm, fhough he ioined fhe squad lafe, became one of fhe besf goalies Taff has ever had. Rog Kiffield also was doing very well af cenfer forward unfil an iniury eliminafed him in mid-season. Alfogefher, in fhe oufcome of fhe games and in fhe spirif shown by fhe squad, fhe season was a very grafifying success. SOCCER SCORES Taff . Lifchfield High 2 Taff I . . The explanaTion Tor This paradox is noT diTTiculT To Tind. We had Two good TirsT lines, who, in eleven games, scored TorTy-one goals. This splendid record resuiTed in an inviTaTion for TaTT To parTicipaTe in The EasTern STaTes BaskeT- ball TournamenT for Secondary Schools aT Glens Falls. New York, aT The end of March. The Tri-STaTe League has noT been operaTing during The war, and iT was The I94l-42 TaTT Team which lasT held The TiTle. So This year's vicfories over Berkshire, Canferbury. Gunnery, HoTchkiss and KenT were repeaT performances for TafT. TafT has now won The league for Three years and confinues To have possession of The silver Trophy which was awarded To The school aT a meeTing of The league in The TafT Dining Room. STronger compeTiTion was meT in The non-league conTesTs wiTh WaTerTown High School, Choafe, Loomis and Kingswood. Kingswood, who had broken a sTring of TwenTy-five WillisTon vicTories, was much feared, buf The l'larTTord Team did noT prove as sTrong as expecTed. Our smallesT margin of vicTory was in The second Choafe game. ln The firsT game aT TafT our win was decisive, buT iT was a much improved ChoaTe Team when we iourneyed To Wallingford. TaTT, on ThaT da , did noT play well, and we were mosT happy To squeak by wiTh a 26-22 edge. Those Tears were unnecessary. Our record away from The school was more brillianf Than when playing aT home. The sTrengTh of The Team was really Two-fold. lT was a highly capable defensive club and unusually equipped in shooTing prowess. No opponenT scored more Than 28 poinTs againsT TafT, and The TafT Team made 282 of all shoTs aTTempTed. To The iniTiaTe These facTs will be recognized as quiTe remarkable. TafT scored a ToTal of 583 poinTs To 3I3 for The opposiTion which is an average of 4I.6 as againsT 22.3. Roger FrecheTTe, CapTain and guard, was one of The mosT brillianT and consisTenT performers. Roger was a fine defensive player and a superb floor worker. He was The play maker and The spark of The quinTeT. In addiTion To his play, he will be remem- bered as one of The besT Team capTains in recenT TafT hisTory. Teamed wiTh FrecheTTe aT guard was VicTor Sued. CapTain-elecT for I946-47. VicTor conTribuTed speed, experT ball handling and boundless enThusiasm. AT cenTer was Al PeTers whose heighT and ruggedness made him invaluable under The backboards. AT one forward was Warren Bean, The shooTing sTar of The Team and The season's high scorer. Warren made 342, of ali shoTs aTTempTed for a ToTal of l52 poinTs. He also was exTremely effecTive de- fensively, and coordinaTed smooThly in Team play. Dave Sheldon. brofher of John Sheldon, '4l, was The oTher forward, and his compeTenT shooTing and floor work was a highly valuable asseT in The play of The club. Larry Munson, whose heighT made him exfremely eTfecTive, was losT To The Team in The February graduaTion. John Rolfe and PeTer Thompson were Two reserve players who Turned in commendable performances. Coaches Beebe and Pennell deserve much crediT for The fine record of These boys. The Team improved sTeadily ThroughouT The season, and They were able To sTay aT The peak even when The pressure was heaviesT. And iT was Team play which made The vicfories possible.
