It was led by the Cheerleaders who worked hard to generate the electricity that kept THS spirit flowing high. The Cheerleaders boosted the foot- ball team each Friday with a Pep Rally in the gym. They sizzled the sidelines with their spirit at the games and helped inspire the crowd to sup- port the Grey hounds. The Pep Squad also did a number of things to boost spirit among the students. They decorated lockers throughout the year, sponsored a pretty legs contest among the teach- ers, and gave Football players gifts at the end of the year, just to name a few. For fun, they had a swim party to kick off the school year, and a get- together after Football was over to wrap up a season of spirit and hard work. Spirit Supports Hounds Running feet, shouts of “We’re 1” and “GO Taft” are sure signs that the pep rally is about to begin. The cheerleaders, pep squad, band and student body congregate in the gym to show support and spirit to the Greyhound team. At the Homecoming pep rally Coach Garrett introduced a new tradi- tion “the spirit jug” filled with the spirit of the student body. As Donna Paterson, head cheerleader, removes the cork; spirit fills the gym. Spirit is shown by the teachers and students participating in skits, contests and cheers. Sweeny Todd was a terrible town ter- ror as he coerced wealthy customers into his barber shop to kill and rob them of their valuables. To dispose of the remains, Sweeny would send the corpse to his accomplice Mrs. Lovett, who made them into her juicy meat pies. Sailor Tom, however, escaped death by being knocked unconcious and pass- ing for dead. Sailor Tom was the ruin of Sweeny Todd and his little scheme. After the fall of Todd all lived hap- pily. The Oriental effect was helped further along with for- tune cookies and egg rolls being served as appetizers. Other appetizers were sausage, sandwiches, and cookies. Such things as putt putt golf, biking, hiking, paddle boats, a train, and bumper cars are just a few. Other activities the seniors did were rid- ing the roller coaster, golf, volleyball, and swimming in the pool which was fed by the river water. One main activity that many of the seniors participated in was the water shoot. The seniors were forbidden to go through the shoot, but there was just no stopping the seniors of ’81. Souvenirs were purchased by many. Most bought T-shirts which read “River Rat” on the front of them. The seniors left for home at about 6:30 p.m. and stopped to eat in Kenedy. They arrived at home at about 11:00 p.m. After the trip the seniors did not have to attend school the next day. The trip was the last time before grad- uation that the class was together. Clark Havis (Melanie Bruton) con- cocted a mixture of fortune cookies, leftover from the prom, and special chemicals to do the deadly job; however, when the time came for all to die, no one was there except Neal and Melody, of course. The big trends in clothing were designer jeans featuring such labels as Gloria Vanderbilt and Calvin Klein. Hairsty les basi- cally followed the wings-layers-curls' look, with var- iations of the French Braid also being popular. “Gil- ley’s,” “Get down to Port Aransas,” and “Izod” shirts were big, as well as pleated pants, straight skirts, and sundresses. ‘Fake Cherokees,’ flat san- dals, and ‘Nike’s’ trekked the halls, as did the ever- popular spiked heels. But the biggest fad was the ‘Urban Cowboy’ look. Boots, hats, and belts were seen more often than anything. World events touched THS, as well. Most evident of this were the yellow ribbons seen at school as a salute to the 52 hostages. (Right) ‘Gilley’s’ shirts are a popular thing seen on campus at THS this year. Tim Rey- nolds received the Big Brother, Big Sister award for the Most Outstand- ing Basketball Player of the Year. Honor graduates this year were Michelle Pingaro, Tara Prather, Patty Vesely, Betty Montgomery, and Melanie Bruton. Also graduating with honors were Pam Dziadek, Mark Thormaehlen, Javier Hernandez, Randy Reiley, and Glenn Rotzler. Steve Lentz, Bridget Mueller, Car- rie Ray, Geneva Martinez, and Mel- vin Mireles were also honor gradu- ates. Others included Margie Rodri- guez, Carolyn Moody, Stacey Hunt, Jim Krebs, and Sylvia Castillo. Stephanie Vermillion, Ginny How- ard, Tessie Rodriguez, Rosario Mar- tinez, Donna Paterson, and Larry Smith completed the list. 140 (Above) Honor graduates Glenn Rotzler, Melanie Bruton, Patty Vesely and Mark Thormaehlen gather together after the National Honor Society induction for refresh- ments. That’s what every one said concerning the school activities and competition. In football the Hounds almost beat the notorious Refugio Bobcats with a score of 7-6 —something no one else came close to doing. This year the Boys’ basketball team almost (Right) The bonfire goes up in flames after a hard days work. (Above) Michelle Pingaro. Then the Girls’ basketball team almost won district, but were beaten by the Lady Longhorns, after a fifteen point lead at the half. Tennis team member, Ricky Chavana, almost advanced to Regional after placing third in district. In addition, the golf team almost advanced to Regional, too, by placing third. The One-Act Play, “Richard the Third’’ almost advanced to area, but remained alter- nate after competing at Refugio. The Literary team almost won District Sweepstakes with 99 points, except George West claimed first place. The Band almost took sweepstakes in Refu- gio with one’s in concert and sight reading, except for a two in marching contest held at Robstown. On the other hand, it’s a good thing some of the almosts didn’t happen. For instance, the bonfire almost didn’t happen because the wood was too wet, and the prom was another activity that almost didn't take place because the band almost didn’t show up. Better luck next year, THS. (Left) Ricky Chavana concentrates on the ball during the district tournament. (Top) Stacey Hunt shoots for two in the George West playoff game in Calallen.
