Music and memory are inevitably interwoven. For all who have thrijled to a haunting melody or who have felt a flash of poignant pain in the association of an old refrain, for those who have danced, laughed, cried to their favorite tunes--these, the pages of 1953 TRACKS are lovingly brought together. Dedication THE GREYHOUND BAND To an organization that has added spirit, tradition, and honor to our school life, we dedicate this THE 1953 TRACKS. I want each one of you, both students and teachers, to know that I have enjoyed working with you. You have contributed much in making this year one of the very best in the history of the school. I.lay this school term bring to each of you the joy and prosperity which come from work well done. Kay peace and happiness be yours from a life well lived, and through- out the years which lie ahead, may j God bless and keep you. Sincerely, i As the school year comes to a close, it is both with concern and satisfaction that I see the 1953 class graduate--concern for the Happiness of your future and the Satisfaction that comes with knowing and teaching you. Your class came to High School with me from Green Avenue, and now as you step into the threshold of maturity, my best wishes will go with you as they have through your high school years. In the fall it ap- peared at the football games and presented half-time shows incorporating precision drills and stunts. Featured in the half- time shows were majorettes Margie Brooks, Roylene Haynes, Sue Hunt and Vivian Crane. Drum Major Sharon Chrestman directed the field shows that were compiled by the Band staff. Contest time came in December, 1952, and the Taft Band, entering in Class AAAA, was again the only one in its class to get a First Division in marching. Concert and sight-reading contests being events of the late Spring, participation in these is anticipated by the organization. Out-of-town trips last year included a visit to San Antonio in May and Concert Festival in Kingsville. The San Antonio trip is on the agenda for this year also. With concerts, contests and trips scheduled for the spring, the Taft High Band will again have had what can be termed a full year. BLAHUTA Head Coach Assistant Coach Junior High Coach and Scout TAFT GREYHOUNDS Captains Managers BEAUCHAMP and GONZALES WITHER and MURRAY football The real highlights of the 1952 season were: The amazing whirlwind finish of the season after a slow and sluggish start; the Greyhounds' first All-State player, in the per- son of Chino Gonzales; the Greyhounds' winning the district championship for the fourth straight year; beating the Sinton Pirates 14-12 in a thrilling game; the placing of four Greyhounds on the All-District team—including Harold Coates, tackle, Jug Sloan, t ac k 1 e (also Williamson's Second Team All-State), Wesley Beauchamp, guard, and Chino Gonzales, back (also All-State guard); and the heart-breaking loss of the bi- district championship to the Hondo Owls in a sea of rain and mudj In dropping the first two games, the potential Greyhound strength could still be detected. It was in the third game with the Mathis Pirates that the 'Hounds hit their stride and were never headed until the fateful bi-district tilt. After being tied by Woods- boro 14-14, the Greyhounds took the following teams in succession: Mathis 20-0, George West 19-0, Sinton 14-12, and Rockport 33-14, before losing to Hondo 13-6 in the bi- district game. Good luck, Greyhounds, in your A A venture in 1953! F. B.--JIMMY HELM R. H. --RAYGON HAMILTON U H. - -ALLEN MUTCHLER Co-Captain--WESLEY BEAUCHAMP--Right Guard Center--RUDY MEDINA L. After a win against Goliad came a loss to Sinton. The Premont Annual Holiday Tournament, December 19th and 20th, gave Taft the first game, a narrow margin loss in the second, and no place. Sev- eral scrimmage games during the second week of the holidays were followed by the Taft Annual Tournament, January 7th, 8th and 9th. Sinton won the tournament for the third consecutive year over a hard-playing Aransas Pass team, the runner-up. Taft lost to Sinton, won over Bishop by a large score, only to lose the Consolation game to Re- fugio. Co-Captain Charles Curtis, who showed the ability to hustle and the willingness to win, was picked as one of the five outstanding players of the tourney. The team starts district 30A play on January 16th with a great desire to add a long- absent trophy to the athletic case. After a sluggish start, the boys hope to finish in top position; at least, they are giving their utmost with the will to win.
