Its results show a cooperative effort that deserves the re- spect of the entire student body as well as the parents and friends of those who read it. It is the outcome of many hours work and imagina- tion. To the staff and its spon- sor, congratulations on a job well done bo preserve the memories that are a part of Taft High School in the school year 1951-52. Sincerely, Congratulations to the annual staff for a job well done. As the years go by, I am sure that you will appre- ciate your efforts and hours of work even more than you realize now, for these pages will bring back memories of times that you shall always cherish as the best of your youth. I wish to remind every one of you that your days in Taft High School are worth much because of helpful asso- ciations, strong friendships, team work, school spirits, and manifold student activities. A trip to the Tri-State Band Fes- tival in Enid, Oklahoma, was an event of last Spring, at which meet the Taft Band was the only band to receive First Division Rating in all competition. In attendance at this meet were bands from twelve states. After receiving First Division Rating in Concert, Sightreading, and Marching in Class AA, the band voted to enter AA-I competition in 1951 and 1952. The group was again the only band in their class to receive First Divison in all events, and they brought home 38 gold medals in solo and ensemble playing. During the Fall, the Marching Band performed at halftime for eleven football games, precision drill and novelties receiving emphasis in this phase of the band’s work. Drum Major Patsy Becker and Majorettes Roylene Haynes, Margie Brooks, Lujean Hamilton, and Corene Crane were featured in the drills. The band also performed for eleven pep rallies and parades in Taft. The Taft Band was guest of Del Mar College in the Fall of 1951, appearing in the Homecoming parade in Corpus Christi, and also performing at Del Mar’s Homecoming football game. With plans for spring concerts, the Contest-festival, and trips, the Taft Band looks forward to busy times ahead. JOSEPH (Victoria) 6 With only four starters back from the great Regional Champion Team of 1950, the season’s prospects looked dim. The Greyhounds looked not too impress- ive as they won over St. Joseph 18-6. Greyhounds winner of 13 straight games. Sept. 14—Game with Refugio rained out. Sept. 21—TAFT 19 INGLESIDE 13. A little more team work developed as the Greyhounds came from behind to overcome a scrappy Ingleside team on McNamee’s hard running and the good de- fensive play of Mutchler and Rodriquez. Greyhounds winner of 14 straight games. Oct. 5—TAFT 18 CORPUS COLLEGE AC. 12. With more team work and an improved spirit, plus the tricky running of Galindo and a fine defensive line of Coates, Sloan, Gonzales, Muckleroy, Sandars, and Curtis, the Greyhounds came from behind to win. Mutchler and Rodriguez again played fine defensive ball. Greyhounds winner of 15 straight game . Oct. 12—TAFT 0 GEORGE WEST 0. (Taft won on penetrations 3-0) The first district game found the Greyhounds threat- ening but unable to score. McNamee's hard running and Galindo's accurate passing to Curtis and Coates, plus the good defensive Greyhound line, carried the Greyhounds on undefeated in 16 games. Oct. 19—TAFT 14 THREE RIVERS 14. (Three Rivers won on penetrations 4-2) A nightmare of fumbles saw the Greyhounds drop a penetration district game to Three Rivers, but a new live star was born that night in the person of Johnny Gilleland. In season play the Greyhounds were still undefeated but tied in 17 games. Oct. 26—TAFT 19 BISHOP 7. The Greyhounds against the heavy Bishop team really began to discover what team spirit could do as they romped over the big Badgers 19-7 in the best all- round game of the year. Everyone that played did a fine job. Undefeated in 18 games! Nov. 2—TAFT 45 MATHIS 20 The Mathis Pirates led at half-time 20-6, but with the determination of McNamee, Gonzales, Galindo, Compton, and Jenkins in the backfield, and a line of Coates, Sloan, Muckleroy, McDonald, Beauchamp, Garcia, Sandars, Gilleland, Maldonado, and Curtis, the Greyhounds were not to be stopped as they scored 39 points in the second half, and held Mathis to no score, to win going away 45-20. Undefeated in 19 games! Nov. 9—TAFT 13 SINTON 20 The Greyhound undefeated string of 19 games came to an end in a nip and tuck battle when a beautiful 80 yard run by McNamee, which was helped along by excellent blocking by the entire team, was called back. Nov. 16—TAFT 40 ROCKPORT 7 The Greyhounds sacked up the district championship as Chino Gonzales ran wild in scoring 3 times; Comp- ton, Jenkins, Galindo, and McNamee, backed by good line blocking, added scores. The B” team had a chance to show their mettle against a scrappy Rock- port team. NOV. 23—TAFT 19 PEARSALL 53 First down and yardage statistics show this to be a much better ball game than the score indicated. The entire Greyhound squad made a good showing, but against the fast-stepping Tooty Carroll, who was too hot to be stopped, this was not enough to advance on to Regional in the state playoff. To the Greyhounds of 1952, the departing seniors say, Go all the way.
