As in former years, the Taft Band presented half-time shows at all the football games, as well as appearances at the pep rallies. After football season, the Marching Band entered the Contest at Robstown and was awarded the only first division given in Class A bands. In the spring, the Concert Band journeyed to Kingsville to enter the Region VII League Contest. The Taft Band was awarded a first division in Concert Band and also in sight-reading. They were given the Special Award Plaque, awarded to the only Band in Class A to receive First Division in all events. Numerous concerts and trips to other cities were part of the busy year’s activities for the Taft Band. The Concert Band wras composed of 120 members, while the Marching Band numbered 109 in its ranks. i2o.ud Lujean Hamilton Roylene Haynes Elna Becker Drum Major Corene Crane Margie Brooks « «4 • • FLUTES Lujean Hamilton Mae Nell Cardwell Mary Jo Tasch Sue Ivey Martha Rrittain Lois Mae Crolley Emma Bess Olliff Annette McClary OBOES Paula Faye Williams Sue Hunt BASSOONS Joan Zell Turner Barby Baucom CLARINETS Roylene Haynes Lauraine Krebs Margie Brooks Sharon Chrestman , Betty Lou Whitehead Mary Jane Rowley Claire Carroll Shirley Saleh Alpha Paterson Juan Hinojosa Mary Ro«e Olliff Patsy Jo Mires Barbara Williams Bob Lobough Harold Hesse Shirley Lewis Vivian Crane Robert Gonzales Deanna McNorton Jovce Gunn Barbara Schindler Ada Francis Decherd Doris Box TENOR SAXOPHONE Amparo Medina Barbara Cox Carmen Martinez Corene Crane Bobbie Joe Pressley Shirley Pvron Mary Alice Gonzales Dorothy Mauch Frank Munn BARITONE SAXOPHONE Joy Rosson Lupe Garcia Peggy James Robert Coker Allen Koonce Vance Ferguson BASS SAXOPHONE Jimmie Morris Dick Tutt BASS CLARINET CORNETS Joyce Power David Moore Joyce Gilleland Royce McDonald Elva Lerma Barton Koonce Beverly Hunt Young Sam Jenkins ALTO SAXOPHONE Bud Compton David McCarron Larry Gobert Leland Chvatal Bobby Koonce Raygon Hamilton Corene Crane Jerry Rosson Douglas Murray Jimmy Helm BARITONES Janelle Atkins Margie Brooks DRUM MAJOR Charles Mount Patsy Whitfield Elna Becker Marvin Havelka Dennis Ondrusek DIRECTOR Bruce Williams Rudy Garcia HORNS Roger Powell Norris Ragle Marion Busby Billie Whitfield Cyrus Holley BASSES Jerry Nisenson Charles Curtis Eugene Hisey Ben Cummins Janice Bishop Marty Robertson Pattie Pressley Milton Decherd Angeline Havelka Dominga Garcia Mary Alice Yglesias Ben Ramirez Cleo Garcia Billy Pierce Annice Roundtree Lonnie Rollins TROMBONES PERCUSSION Bill Sandars Rena Sanders Doyle Herron Carl Mount Kathreen Gibson Buster Becker Douglas Hart Kathleen Gibson Elna Becker Benny Box MAJORETTES Judson Boykin Mavis Hunt Lujean Hamilton Roylene Haynes “On the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds which in other years on other fields will bear the fruits of victory ...” —MacArthur The thud of leather against flesh ... the sharp sounds of a quarterback's signal . . . the music of the band . . . the roar of the crowd. The Greyhound line of Flinn, Wither, Gonzales, Barecky, Muckleroy, Rosson and Coates was deadly in its blocking and a quartet of fast moving backs, Hunt. McNamee, Guedin and Galindo, took advantage of every block to eat up the yardage. The rack- ribbed forward wall, mentioned above, and including Sloan, Saleh and Curtis, played magnificent defensive ball, never letting Lyford work up a real scoring threat. Shifty Potsy Hunt, bruising Frank McNamee and destructive Jackie Guedin sparked the ground-gaining Taft offensive.
