This season was supposed to be the year that Taft was going to the State meet, but the three early conference losses left the Greyhounds out in the cold. These three losses to Gregory, Woodsboro, and Rockport prac- tically handed Rockport the district championship, and the Pirates coasted on in. The Greyhounds brought home two runner-up trophies this season; one from the Sinton Tournament, and from their own annual Taft Tour- ney. The Dogs lost a heart-breaker to Bishop in the Sinton finals, 38-37. The highlight of this tournament was the 44-41 defeat handed Sinton by Taft in the opening round. The Dogs had to overcome a 13-2 deficit af the end of the first quarter to go on and win. The Greyhounds ended up the season with a record of 16 wins and nine losses. Their conference record was seven wins and three losses. The lettermen for this season were: Co-captain Wayne Quarles, Co-captain Potsy Hunt, Tommy Mayfield, Frank McNamee, Bob Flinn, Jackie Guedin, and Buster Chancey. For the second year, Tommy Mayfield led the team's scoring with 254 points. He was followed by Potsy Hunt with 180 points. The Greyhound B Team won the district championship with a conference record of 9-1, their only loss being to Ingleside by a score of 30-29. The Dog's season record was 14 wins and two losses. The members of this championship group were: Co-captain Teddy Barecky, Co-captain Bob Wither, Barton Koonce, Buster Chancey, Dick Tutt, Royce McDonald, Harold Coates, and Mike Maldonado. The Spring of 1949 found the Taft High Band winning First Division in Concert at the Regional Music Competion-Festival in Kingsville. Taft Band was the only band in Class A to receive this rating. With the beginning of football season, the band began its marching and half-time show activities. The band appeared at all games, and played numerous pep rallies and parades. In December 1949 the Taft Band competed in the Interscholastic League marching contest held in Robston. Again, the Taft High Band was the only band in Class A to receive a First Division rating. Other projects of the band during the past year included a trip to the Gonzalez Music Festival and the Onion Fiesta at Raymondville. There the band played a con- cert for Governor Beauford Jester and was presented a beautiful plaque by the Governor. The Taft High Band was one of twenty bands selected from the entire state of Texas to participate in TMEA Band Day at the State Fair in Dallas. The band played a concert at the Hall of State in Dallas and was chosen to appear in a motion picture photographed on the Fair Grounds. A marching exhibition in the Cotton Bowl climaxed the activities for the Taft Band in Dallas. Plans completed for the year included presenting concerts in Taft Auditorium and participation in the spring competition Festivals. The Taft High Band program is augmented by the beginning of musical training in the fifth grade, and the Junior Band, which has a membership of 97 members. The Taft High Band numbers I 14 in the Concert Band and 101 in the Marching Band. Director Marion Busby Lujean Hamilton Margie Brooks Roylene Haynes FLUTES Patti Sparks Mae N.
