Oh! l'm sorry ATHLETICS - BASKETBALL The mighty Senators lost all but one starter, Donald Nelson, but roared back wiTh teeming desire and posTed a mediocre but impressive season record, con- sidering The many close losses. Although The Senators never gained an ouTsTanding rating among The Top Teams in The ciTy, They did defeat many Teams that were rated above Them. One of The most publicized vic- Tories was The 66-64 upset victory over Central, which was rated No. l in The city and Top-seeded in The ciTy tournament. The first victory over Central snapped Their ll-game winning streak. ln The Public High School League, The Senators were Tied for Third place. ln other games, Taft failed To capiTalize on Their scoring opporTuniTies and dropped The first Two games of The season To Elder and Xavier. The SenaTors had a holiday scoring-spree as They routed visiting rival Hamilton Taft, 7l-57. Joe Sutherlin scored a foul shoT and a field goal To swipe a 38-35 overtime vicTory over a scrappy Amelia five. The Statesman acknowledges each departing senior with his outstanding basketball contribution. Captain, leading scorer, and Top rebounder are just a few of The Titles Donald Nelson held as he boasted a T7 point game-average. Don Jabo Nelson scored 27 points, snared 23 rebounds, and was super-de- fensive in The Taft-Withrow match. If There was an award for Top CluTch Performer Joseph Sutherlin would be a likely nominee for it. Joe intercepted The 3 passes ThaT helped Tie The score, scored Taft's last five points, was credited with 5 key assists and was The Timely sparkplug That ignited a rally ThaT saw CenTral go down in defeat, 66-64. For James Wynn There is a number of games for which he contributed importantly. The mosT recenT of The T959-60 basketball campaign was The last game of The regular season. With Two seconds To go, The midget-size champion shoT a long arching lump shot that Tied The score 46-46 and enabled Taft To go on To win 48-47. Artie Walker, The prolific, king-size dunker, was all Taft needed To scalp The brave Hughes Reds 65-60. Artie played Terrifically on his way To I4 points, Cnot To mention a couple of fan-Thrilling dunksj, 5 inTer- cepTions, T5 rebounds, blocked 7 shoTs and was mam- moth-like on defense. I73
