Over two-thousand years ago, Plato stated in The Republic that the direction in which education starts a man truly determines his future life. Each generation since that time has shared, in some measure, Plato's con- cern over its educational system. Our generation is no ex- ception. Today, there are more than 20,000 possible careers in America, diverse enough to encompass everyone's interests and abilities. Yet 2.5 million young people each year graduate from high school or drop out of high school or college with no planned career and few, if any, marketable skills. These young people urgently need the type of educa- tion and training 'that can assure them a fully productive and rewarding participation in modern society. It is quite natural then, that career education has come to the forefront of national concern in education during the past few years. We have at last begun to recognize the urgency of providing every young person the opportunity to explore careers, to examine occupational opportunities, and to learn more about the work-world surrounding him. In 1970, Ohio became the first state in the nation to require that each of its public school districts gear up to offer comprehensive vocational education programs to their students by 1975. Hamilton has developed such a plan. We have, during the past few years, added many new career education programs for our students. Additional new programs will soon be developed. It is our hope that ultimately our local schools will offer a total career education program sufficiently extensive in scope to provide all students the opportunity to receive meaningful learning experiences and to graduate with . di f Ted Case of Drafting. definite career objectives and salable job skills.
