Front row: Susan Hall, Sue Durbin, Kathy Poe, Margie Ryan. One of the most memorable events of any school year is Homecoming. The 1972-73 Homecoming activities proved to be most successful. The theme, Raindrops'l, was well por- trayed by umbrellas and streams of silver raindrops hung from the ceiling. At the Coronation of Miss Chris Lazares in the annual school assembly, Mark McCormick, a tri- captain of the football team, crowned and kissed the queen. Marlon Dixon, another tri-captain, presented Queen Chris with a bouquet of roses. The traditional Homecoming parade added to the color and festivity of the weekend. The spirit cars and floats revealed the extent of student par- ticipation. The class of '75 was awarded the trophy for the best float. Chris and her court presided over the Homecoming football game. The Lancaster Gales were the Tigers' opponents and there was a good sized crowd in spite of the rain. Attendance was good at the dance which ter- minated the exciting weekend. The entertainment provided by the teachers and the orchestra was excellent. Escorts-Left to Right: Stanley Miller, Greg Swinney, Mark Bowling, Greg Hoes, Maurice Goebel. Rob Wile, Bill Turner. When Steve asked me if I'd like for him to write me a good children's play .... I thought he was kidding The Ilth Annual Children's Play, Beauty and the Beast, was, a very special play in many respects. It was the premier performance of a completely revamped adaptation of this classic fairytale. Two Taft Alumni, Stephen Arthur Williams and Amanda Boyd Zenner turned out what, I believe, is one of the funniest most entertaining children's play I've ever read, much less had the opportunity to direct. Filled with an assortment of hilarity, memorable songs and music, this old story of a beautiful young girl and a bewitched prince captivated several adult evening audiences as well as thrilling over 1800 children during the morning performances. Steve, a former dramatics student, now majoring in theatre, and Amy, majoring injournalism, are to be strong- ly congratulated for such a fine play in their initial attempt. To both of you, thanks again. This play was special, also in that it involved so many first time people in a theatrical endeavor that was quite dif- ficult to stage. Our set was the most elaborate we have ever attempted, our costumes were exceptionally professional, and in many other ways, our new people came through to help make this one of the most memorable of all children's plays. Lastly, a special recognition to my especially talented friends ...... to Steve, Skyp, Jimmy, and Toni for helping all of us bring Beauty and the Beast to life. Ted Mate, Doug Beazley, Gordon Ballinger, Susan Hall, Lisa Sister Bessie tries to talk Dude Lester into umarryin' up with her. This spring, one of the most challenging of all Taft Dramatics Department productions was presented at the end of March. The play, as well as the act, was presented with total realism. Intensive character study made for realistic character portrayals. The set was complete with a 30 foot tree, a rustic house, a corn crib, a wrecked car, a well, and dirt. The people of Tobacco Road left quite an impression on the actors as well as the audience. In all aspects, Tobacco Road was a triumph. It is the legacy of previous students and a challenge to the present students. We must all continue to keep Taft an outstanding place to transform ...,,,,,,.s ourselves into educated citizens of our community. . Assistant Principal We hear many complimentary statements regarding numerous schools in our nation today. The descriptive terminology used generally reflects the school's program, faculty, and students. For years, Taft High School has been blessed with a most competent staff. The school's program has been in the operating realm of excellence. Perhaps, the biggest asset at Taft is the student body. Taft is YOU. You are what makes things go. As you travel these memorable pages, you once again will see the fine quality of the Talisman staff. The story of pictures will unfold to you Taft High School of 1972-1973. It might be a story of happiness as Taft won over Garfield in football, a story of sadness in defeat, a story of self pride for being involved, or a story unknown whose label you must attach. Regardless of its content, its actors are you, YOU are Taft. Principal fhfpfdt . nk S A Q, if ' Q ,Q , a- A 3 fl t V . : 53 X . This volume of Taft activities of the year is your opportunity to penetrate more closely into the magic spell of Taft Senior High. It is to you what the thermometer or the X-ray is to the doctor or what the microscope is to the scientist. It is your opportunity to take a closer look. Just as a bystander may sometimes perhaps see more of the game than the player, you, through this magic charm in becoming the bystander or the spectator of an entire school year of life at Taft, may see more of student life in these pages than you observed as one individual participant during the year. Take time for a closer lookg perceive as you see, for a momentls insight can be worth a life's experience. To quote John Ruskin, Hundreds of people can talk for one who can think, but thousands can think for one who can see. To see clearly is poetry, prophecy, and religion - all in one. Biblical Background Taking a closer look could be the theme for the new English program at Taft as well as for this year's Talisman. At a time when we are all tempted to make quick, superficial, and easy decisions in a busy, hurried life, the English faculty, through its new program of course electives, is en- couraging students to study deeply, to understand fully, and then to respond wisely to lasting truths on the strength of this knowledge and understanding. William Shakespeare urged us to un- mask falsehood and bring truth to light. This is what the English depart- ment is hoping to do by offering students an opportunity to delve deeply into their own areas of interest. Business is taking a closer look at us. This is indicated to us by employers who call us to help them fill job openings as they occur because they believe that we are a good source of capable help. We are taking a closer look at business, making sure that those businesses that with our cooperative program observe the regulations set down by law to the best of their ability. The community is taking a closer look at cooperative education as a whole. Robuck, a graduate of Ohio State University and The University of Michigan. He was assisted by Miss Laura Connell, also a graduate of Ohio State. The marching band began with a rigorous four hour per day practice schedule two weeks before school opened and continued the pace throughout the football season. The band, accompanied by its five ma- jorettes and an expanded 14-member drill corps, performed at nine football games and four parades during the fall season. The Christmas concert marked the year's first performance by the Concert Band and also provided a look at the newly adopted formal concert attire for the girls. The Brass Choir, a select group from the band, was asked to perform twice on the steps of the Butler County Courthouse, adding to the Christmas festivities in the downtown area. The Winter Invitational Concert was another first for Taft High School. Each year guest artists, clinitions or directors will be featured. This year Dr. Robert Hartwell, director of bands at Eastern Kentucky University provided a memorable experience for both the band and the audience. Also featured on this program was the Taft Stage Band which had an ac- tive season of its own playing at various school and community functions. Two alternating Pep Bands provided music and spirit for Taftis home basketball games. 752-A1 C. 12431 l 185 TIGER MARCHI G BA D 'T X First row. Left to Right: Tina Gentry. Stephanie Chadwell. Over two-thousand years ago, Plato stated in The Republic that the direction in which education starts a man truly determines his future life. Each generation since that time has shared, in some measure, Plato's con- cern over its educational system. Our generation is no ex- ception. Today, there are more than 20,000 possible careers in America, diverse enough to encompass everyone's interests and abilities. Yet 2.5 million young people each year graduate from high school or drop out of high school or college with no planned career and few, if any, marketable skills. These young people urgently need the type of educa- tion and training 'that can assure them a fully productive and rewarding participation in modern society. It is quite natural then, that career education has come to the forefront of national concern in education during the past few years. We have at last begun to recognize the urgency of providing every young person the opportunity to explore careers, to examine occupational opportunities, and to learn more about the work-world surrounding him. In 1970, Ohio became the first state in the nation to require that each of its public school districts gear up to offer comprehensive vocational education programs to their students by 1975. Hamilton has developed such a plan. We have, during the past few years, added many new career education programs for our students. Additional new programs will soon be developed. It is our hope that ultimately our local schools will offer a total career education program sufficiently extensive in scope to provide all students the opportunity to receive meaningful learning experiences and to graduate with . di f Ted Case of Drafting. definite career objectives and salable job skills.
