l l VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM-Left to Right, First Row: Bill Kiefer Manager, Kendall Fields, Jerry Carr, Mark Hopkins, Le- xester Printup, Dave Fischer, Second Row: Mr. l-ledrick, Coach, Richard Burton, Mike Burg, Lee Purdy, Jim Patterson, Art Sav- age Wtilfer Betscher. Defeated by Portsmouth 64-40, Taft School was initiated into basketball competition as a member of the Greater Ohio League. In the coming season, the Tigers were to face a rough schedule including bouts with some of the top schools in Ohio. But the l-ledricmen , although lacking in experience, faced their competition with determination and ambition, each player having the self-desire to improve himself and his team, As the team progressed toward its goals, it represented Taft with the best of its ability and gained public recogni- tion. Much progress was noticed during the sea- son, The first game with our cross-town rivals, the powerful Garfield Griffins, resulted in a moral victory for Taft. Inspired by 2,000 cheer- ing Taft fans, the Tigers led at one time l4-2 and out played their Garfield rivals through most of the game although they finally over- powered. The second Garfield game, played on the opponent's court, was a hard one for us to lose. The Tigers were paced by Kendall Fields who scored 25 points in this game. During the season the squad was well sup- ported by the band, the Roaring Tigers, and a spirited student body ably led by the cheer- leaders. A bright future is seen for Taft next year. Returning to the squad will be many under- classmen who were active this past season.
