August 20th brought together for the first time new candidates for the Taft football team. We met in a new building, dressed in a new shower room, and wel- comed unfinished cold showers on those hot August days. The furrowed alfalfa field across Eaton Road be- came the training ground for our 30 plus football neo- phytes. Starting with a new coaching staff and a new football system, we ap- proached the opening of football with a great amount of apprehension. Nine former Big Blue names graced our roster, but Lady Luck did not see fit to allow us the extended use of this group, in toto. One by one our lettermen met misfortune after misfortune, but they continued to ex- emplify a cheerful outlook and a balanced perspective. 66 Work, work, and more work, defeat, defeat, and more de- feats seemed to be the order of each passing week. All was not dark, however. lnexperienced seniors, un- complaining juniors, and anxious sophomores fought valiantly, prodded by the ever-present and tremen- dous spirit of a loyal student body, an understanding ad- ministration and faculty, and a sympathetic and apprecia- tive Taft community.
