TAFT HI GRADS! Here are some stories about your name sake: One night William Howard Taft, then a young law reporter, finished studying a case in Somerville, Ohio, and discovered that he could not get back to his office that night unless he could stop a through express. He wired division headquarters: Will you stop through express at Somerville to take on a large party? Promptly came back the reply: Yes When the train arrived, the conductor said to Mr. Taft, Where's the large party we were to take on? Mr. Taft regarded his own comfortable bulk ruefully and laughed. l'm it, he said, stepping aboard the train. Horace Dutton Taft, late headmaster of the Taft School, was noted for his strictness as a disciplinarian and also for his sense of humor. There was one school rule which could never be broken: unscheduled private vacations, no matter what the ex- cuse, were simply not countenanced. Yet a special problem arose when the son of the headmaster's brother, William Howard Taft, asked permission to attend his father's inauguration as President of the United States. After deliberation, the request was granted -not, however, as an exception to a strict rule, but by authority of a new rule duly passed and to this day a part of the school'S legal code. The new rule: Any boy whose father is elected to the Presidency of the United States shall be permitted to attend the inauguration ceremony. Like your namesake, you too are charged with bigness, but not necessar- ily bigness of stature. Your bigness should be of the heart and of the mind. Like him, you too are important. Your community has educated you. It has tried to show you how to be a good citizen. Now it is up to you to make this importance work for the benefit of all. Think BIG, maybe your son can get a day off sometime to see you honored. DIVISION OF HAMILTON'THONIAS CORPORATION HAMILTON, OHIO PHONE TW 5-5661
