This has been a year in which some fine traditions and records have been established and may future years continue to be even more successful. On behalf of our faculty and students, I would like to congratu- late the members of the graduating class of Taft Senior High School for their first edition of the Talisman. Richard F. Goos, Principal ADMINISTRATION 12 Good beginnings are important. This school year has been significant to Taft High School because students, parents and teachers have set enviable ship. I commend the Staff of the Talisman for their endeavors in behalf of high standards for our school. 1u...., ' The first year at Taft High School has been enjoyable and successful, even though there were many problems, new adjustments to make, and hours and hours of hard, tiring work. The community, pupils, and school personnel all contributed much to make this first year outstanding. We are extremely proud of the many and unusual accomplishments of this first year and look to the future for even greater improvements. We hope that this school will always give the pupils the best possible preparation for life and that the student body and everyone associated with it will always be proud to have been a part of Taft Senior High School. After hectic weeks of building floats, choosing a court, and planning an assembly, the preparations were completed iust in time. When Friday came, everything was ready. The queen was chosen and crowned in an impressive ceremony and the same evening a colorful parade accompanied our first football victory The week end, which wound up with a dance the next evening, could not have been more wonderful. Stalls, is one of the largest organi- zations of the school. lts many divisions were often called upon to perform at various school functions. The Taft band kept spirit high at foot- ball and basketball games, later in the year pre- sented a spring concert, and with groups from the choirs and orchestra brought honors to the school at the Miami music contest. The Concert Choir, made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors selected from the smaller vo- cal groups, presented several programs. Combined with the Taft orchestra they gave Thanksgiving and Christmas concerts and later performed out- standingly in the Spring Musical, the major pro- duction of the year. Besides providing music between the acts of Annie Get Your Gun, the Taft Oi'Cl'lSSff'3 WGS Called upon to entertain at several school assemblies and to perform at two school concerts. August 20th brought together for the first time new candidates for the Taft football team. We met in a new building, dressed in a new shower room, and wel- comed unfinished cold showers on those hot August days. The furrowed alfalfa field across Eaton Road be- came the training ground for our 30 plus football neo- phytes. Starting with a new coaching staff and a new football system, we ap- proached the opening of football with a great amount of apprehension. Nine former Big Blue names graced our roster, but Lady Luck did not see fit to allow us the extended use of this group, in toto. One by one our lettermen met misfortune after misfortune, but they continued to ex- emplify a cheerful outlook and a balanced perspective. 66 Work, work, and more work, defeat, defeat, and more de- feats seemed to be the order of each passing week. All was not dark, however. lnexperienced seniors, un- complaining juniors, and anxious sophomores fought valiantly, prodded by the ever-present and tremen- dous spirit of a loyal student body, an understanding ad- ministration and faculty, and a sympathetic and apprecia- tive Taft community. 'SV p ' i as We'll remember our open- ing gameg the great efforts at Portsmouth ancl Garfielclg our final victoryg but most of all we'll remember that we were the first Taft football team. Our memories are richer because of this l959 football season, but our hopes are greater too for an even richer and more rewarding football season in l96O. g t ,,:1,.a-,Q C ' 'C'-'ni Coach McCollum carefully watches practice with the dummy. We hope it will be the first of many for Taft l-ligh School. ?m.,f 1' , V c,e'X iw-aj 51.7 ,V I 5, l l VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM-Left to Right, First Row: Bill Kiefer Manager, Kendall Fields, Jerry Carr, Mark Hopkins, Le- xester Printup, Dave Fischer, Second Row: Mr. l-ledrick, Coach, Richard Burton, Mike Burg, Lee Purdy, Jim Patterson, Art Sav- age Wtilfer Betscher. Defeated by Portsmouth 64-40, Taft School was initiated into basketball competition as a member of the Greater Ohio League. In the coming season, the Tigers were to face a rough schedule including bouts with some of the top schools in Ohio. But the l-ledricmen , although lacking in experience, faced their competition with determination and ambition, each player having the self-desire to improve himself and his team, As the team progressed toward its goals, it represented Taft with the best of its ability and gained public recogni- tion. Much progress was noticed during the sea- son, The first game with our cross-town rivals, the powerful Garfield Griffins, resulted in a moral victory for Taft. Inspired by 2,000 cheer- ing Taft fans, the Tigers led at one time l4-2 and out played their Garfield rivals through most of the game although they finally over- powered. The second Garfield game, played on the opponent's court, was a hard one for us to lose. The Tigers were paced by Kendall Fields who scored 25 points in this game. During the season the squad was well sup- ported by the band, the Roaring Tigers, and a spirited student body ably led by the cheer- leaders. A bright future is seen for Taft next year. Returning to the squad will be many under- classmen who were active this past season. VARSITY AND RESERVE BASKETBALL SQUADS 5, 1Sf - f 4 as S X, , I I Ai. DEDICATION 5 T41 XX -'QQ Q- W, .- 1 xi, s. ,YQ We, the students of Taft l-ligh School, dedicate edition Qt the Talisman to our parents, friends, and have looked towards the future and have made this school possible for us, the future citizens of America. After recognizing the need for our school and four others in this communityjfafcplan fin theic,forrr1Qof,,iaj ,put before the Hamilton voters by the Board ioflilfducation. These voters said yes and arrangements were made right away to begin construc- tion on our school. ln the passing years many problems were faced by those responsible, but when fall of l96O came the Taft doors were open, waiting for us, the first students of Taft to enter. This first year was rough going sometimes, but each student strived to help build a better Taft for the future years. Many times our hopes were downcast but the spark of Tiger Spirit was always present, helping Taft to move forward. We have accepted the trust and responsibility of this building, and have carried it out to the best of our ability in social activities, sports, and scholarship. To the future Taft students we entrust this school with the significance it was given to us. 'Ike '3onmal Dedication ob 'Iabt -High School The Taft dinner was well supported by everyone. Many par- ents willingly gave up of their time to work in the kitchens or to help in many other capacities with the dinner. For all Taft students and those con- cerned with the planning and build- ing of this school. Dedication Day was most memorable and exciting. Everyone, that day, expressed their gratitude for this new school. The American Legion of l-lamilton began the ceremony by raising a new flag over Taft. The Band followed with a fine concert presented out on the green. In the auditorium the keys of the building were presented to Mr. Grover Kirgan, President of the Hamilton Board of Education, by a representative of the architect firm that planned the school. l-le was fol- lowed by Dr. Lester L. Dickey, Super- intendent of Hamilton Schools, who addressed those present. Miss Lida Blackford, representing the student body, expressed pride the students share in their new school. Throughout the day a delicious turkey dinner was served in the cafe- teria. This successful dinner was served by Taft parents. The Ways and Means committee headed the af- fair. Inspired by these various activities the Taft students began their tradi- tionaof living up to the expectation of those adults who have provided this school. a L E iii The American Legion comes to attention as the Tiger Marching Band gets into step. l'l4 4 w , q 45133 1 E Q '-1 V X xv E5 X Hfw+1s-ws' ,'f- ij, 'S 1 L 5 X 1 I tif 'fab 43 Yi U 4' 'N ! V rg 5 ,,,,.-f I 3 bfi gy n r- X, if TAFT HI GRADS! Here are some stories about your name sake: One night William Howard Taft, then a young law reporter, finished studying a case in Somerville, Ohio, and discovered that he could not get back to his office that night unless he could stop a through express. He wired division headquarters: Will you stop through express at Somerville to take on a large party? Promptly came back the reply: Yes When the train arrived, the conductor said to Mr. Taft, Where's the large party we were to take on? Mr. Taft regarded his own comfortable bulk ruefully and laughed. l'm it, he said, stepping aboard the train. Horace Dutton Taft, late headmaster of the Taft School, was noted for his strictness as a disciplinarian and also for his sense of humor. There was one school rule which could never be broken: unscheduled private vacations, no matter what the ex- cuse, were simply not countenanced. Yet a special problem arose when the son of the headmaster's brother, William Howard Taft, asked permission to attend his father's inauguration as President of the United States. After deliberation, the request was granted -not, however, as an exception to a strict rule, but by authority of a new rule duly passed and to this day a part of the school'S legal code. The new rule: Any boy whose father is elected to the Presidency of the United States shall be permitted to attend the inauguration ceremony. Like your namesake, you too are charged with bigness, but not necessar- ily bigness of stature. Your bigness should be of the heart and of the mind. Like him, you too are important. Your community has educated you. It has tried to show you how to be a good citizen. Now it is up to you to make this importance work for the benefit of all. Think BIG, maybe your son can get a day off sometime to see you honored.
