Led by Chief Signalman Harrison and stern taskmaster Jordan, SM1, these men handle all the visual communications for the ship and the embarked Commander. During a deployment with the Sixth Fleet, it is not uncommon to see the entire Division engaged in executing tact- ical signals by flaghoist, while simultaneously passing traffic by flashing light, sema- phore, yardarm blinker, or Nancy, as the case may be. -il-UE

S-1 is made up of Storekeepers and Disbursing Clerks. The storekeepers Work in the 15 storerooms scattered throughout the ship and the' Supply Office issuing, inventorying, stowing, receiving, identifying, location and maintaining records on the tens of thousands of parts. If you overhear a man talking about Cosals, Z cog, CID numbers, or OPTARS you can rest assure he is one of the TACONIC's storekeepers. The Disbfwrsing Clerks stay close to the DISBURS ING OFFICE computing pay, travel and shore patrol allowances, registering allotments, paying bills, and exchanging foreign currency. You will overhear them carrying on about pay entry base dates, S8zFD, leave RATS, FICA, and PV's.
