The leading petty officer of the division is also assistant to the navigator. The other QMs have various duties including obtaining time ticks necessary to keep the ship's chronometers, getting azmuths of the sun to check any errors in tae gyrocompasses, maintenance of navigation spaces, and keeping navigation charts an publications up to date for safe navigation. Probably the most important duty of the QM is standing Watch in port and, when under way, acting as right hand man to the OOD, and keeping the QM notebook from which the OOD Writes the ship's log. X!
