LT H. B. Knecht, First Lieutenant. DECK In the Deck Department men learn to be sailors, for here the traditions of the sea are a basic part of everyday life. From paint chipping to fancywork, from fueling rigs to ground tackle, from boat coxswain to helmsman the boatswain mates' specialities are as varied as is Navy life itself. When the boat lowers away in heavy weather to take somebody off a floundered wreck or a sinking plane, you're the man who will take charge of her. In winter or summer, daylight or dark, in fair weather or foul, when the gang hits the deck-there you'll be. You won't spend much time sitting with your slippers on the radiator, but as Kipling says, 'You'll be a man, my son!
