Loter she wos token over by the Novy ond tronsferred to the Atlontic Bosin Iron Works, Brooklyn, New York, where she wos converted to serve os on Amphibious Force Commond Ship. She wos commissioned ot Brooklyn on loJonuory l945. Soon ofter her commissioning, TACONIC wos ossigned to the U.S. Atlontic Fleet Amphibious Force. She hos served os flogship for either the Commonder Amphibious Force, Commonder Amphibious Group 2, or Commonder Amphibious Group 4, except for brief periods. She served os flogship for Commonder Fleet Air, Eostern Atlcintic ond Med- iterroneon for obout four months in the summer of l953 ot Noples, ltoly. TACONIC hos porticipoteol in mony troining exercises in the Nor- folk, Virginio, Comp Pendleton iVirginio Beoch, Vo.l ond Comp Leiune iOnslow Beoch, N.C.l oreos, ond in numerous fleet omphibious mo- neuvers in the Coribbeoin ond Gulf of Mexico oreos. ln June l949 TACONIC brought dependents of Novol personnel from the Ponomo Conol Zone to Norfolk in whot wos colled Gperotion Dioperf' ln the summer of l952 TACONIC steomed into northern woters of Boiffln Boy on Gperotion SUNFC to resupply northern boses in Greenlond. After the tour ot Noples in the summer of l953, she joined other NATG forces neor Kovollo, Greece, for operotion Weldfost. ln 1956 TACONIC ogoin returned to the Ivlediterroneon oreo, this time os flogship of the tosk force corrying the reinforced Second Bottolion Eighth lvlorine Regiment. After completing her regulor shipyord ovoilobility in Morch l957, TACONIC corried President Eisenhower's limousine ond stolf cors to Bermudo, B.W.I., where she furnisheol communicotions support for the meeting between the President ond Prime Minister Mocmilloin. TACONIC porticipoted in operotion CAPIBEX in April l957 os flogship of ComPhibGru 4, PADM W. K. Romoser. This exercise reoched its climox with the londing of Ivlorines by oir ond seo on the coost of Ponomoi. And in Moy l957 TACONIC ogoin left her home port, Norfolk, to ioin the Sixth Fleet ond contribute her services in the Ivlediterroneon Seo. As the flogship for the Amphibious forces, she continues to do her port in mointoining United Stotes seo power ond world peoce. 6
