YVICKENDEN Headmaster 1955 MRS. JAMES W. WICKENDEN Ilinrr 'n' Aft Evhiratinn To our Director of Athletics in gratitude for, and in appreciation of, a decade of unsitinting service. The present athletic schedule played by the scho0l's countless teams are evidence of his contribution in pro- viding the opportunity for stimulating competition to even the least of the athletes among us. In addition, the school's present high calibre of athletic opposition and its reputation as a representative of the best in sports and sportsman- ship are to a large degree a result of his persistent efforts. For these, and for his outstanding teaching ability, his competent directing of the Tabor Summer Program, for his understanding of our problems and pleasantly firm guidance - We respectfully dedicate our Yearbook to - ALLEN G. But, here we are, those four years later -- the graduating Senior Class. XVe have savoured the experiences of a senior year. It is now our turn to pass to the undergraduates the responsibilities which they must uphold. lVe trust we have succeeded, at least in part, in exemplifying a high regard for scholarship, a genuine enthusiasm for athletics, and an appreciation of the value of fellowship. Looking hack, we see many things accomplished and some oppor- tunities lost. In the sophomore year most students become increasingly active in school organizations and more fully aware of the importance of academic proficiency. In these regards we have noticed a marked contribution to school life by this yearis Sophomore Class. NVith many outstanding boys lead- ing the way, this group has shown the desire to make good use of its capabilities in the classroom and on the playing fields. The steady development of the potentialities of this class is sure to bring it increasing success in the years that lie ahead. 4 'ZSQQHZCLIZ 6756155 Front row, left to right-Whiting, Taylor, Yates, Helton, Henry G., Hoagland T., Harley, Calderone, Angle Glick, Henry W., Leonard. A strong class in terms of its inter- ests, its members have met scholastic and athletic responsibilities with enthusiasm that is indeed meritorious. A special Word of commendation should be given to Mr. Trautman for his contribution in guiding and directing the energies and efforts of this class. Realizing the importance of starting a job Well, he set high standards for the freshmen and they have met those standards most suc- cessfully. There is, of course, much to be accomplished. From the midst of this class must come the leaders of the class of 1960. In order to establish a greater understanding between the Head- master and tl1e student body, the Student Council was organized many years ago, and remains today as an organization firmly rooted in the tradition of the school. Composed of four class leaders who are elected in the spring of their junior year and one additional member selected the following year, the Council is one of the highest honors that a student can attain. It is indicative not only of the studentis strength of character but also of his ability to meet responsibility forcefully. The five man group appoints positions for non-elective officers, in addition to being the Headmasterls student advisory group. The Council- men should pride themselves in such an organization as theirs, one which has securely made its mark in Taboris history through the years. um .faucfa Socieft Front row. left to right-Munro, Wickenden. The intention of this organization is to promote an interest and a desire in the academic field. The membership in the Tabor Chapter is relatively small due to the high averages required of its members. A junior must have grades of 882, or betterg and a senior is required to maintain an average of 8552, or better. There are two meetings a year. One is the annual chapter meeting Where the new members are electedg the other is the annual National Meet- ing, which this year was held at Phillips Exeter Academy. The Tabor Chapter has been under the able leadership of Mr. Keith since its found- ing in the early thirties. This year Mr. Smart has consented to assist Mr. Keith in this important organization. 95554115612 gsam Front row, left to right-Norwood. Ford, L.. Leeds, Carter, J., Barrington, Glaubitz. The team was not as active as in former years, but the members of the team were very enthusiastic toward the debates. This year the most successful team consisted of Ion Carter, Gerald Barrington, Lincoln Ford, and Jeffrey Leeds. They prepared and pre- sented convincing arguments on outstanding current issues in world and national affairs. Particular regard should be paid to the coaching of Mr. VVickenden Whose experienced direction was of great assistance to the team. A member of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, 'The Logi' includes in its issues not only editorial and specilic bits of news, but also, from time to time, articles which are intriguing in themselves and offer an outlet of originality by the writer. In the Winter the band plays at home basketball games. In the spring there are many areas Where they make an indispensable contribution. The meetings consist of boys speaking on different projects and working out puzzles and problems. Each boy works on a major topic and then presents it to the club during the meetings. These plays proved quite suc- cessful with the capable acting of Andrew Vitali, Gerald Barrington, Lin- coln Ford and Ion Carter. The season was closed with a three act comedy. All of this activity was enjoyed as much by the actors as it was by the audience. Then the Tabor team managed to Win against Governor Dummer by a score of 3-1. But the high point of the season occurred when Tabor managed to defeat the All Stars by an over- powering score of 5-1. The next weekend, the team kept it up by defeating Nantucket High School, 39-0. Although the varsity ended the season with a 2-3 record, the deter- mination and drive of the team, led by John Gada in the line, more than made up for the record. These took the form of two rained out games and several injuries suffered by promising players early in the SGEISOII. The team, which had an unusually quick and heavy line, was led by the enthusiastic Captain, Arthur Sibley. The team ran from a Tv and Single VVing,' formation, sparked by a small but fast backlield which was led by quarterback Al Townsend. The team ended the season with three wins and two losses. It was a Well-drilled team with the able coaching of Mr. Sacco and Mr. Murphy. The team was led in the backfield with the hard driving boys, Richardson, Heap, and Saunders. Added to these were the leadership of Link Ford, and the fight of the key-linemen, Hardy, O,Brien, and Ziskind, and little Pete Meenan, who showed exceptional spirit and determination. The boats were in excellent condition due to the work done on them the year before. New aluminum rigging and dacron sails have increased the rac- ing ability and also the beauty of the Tabor fleet. As usual, the sailing crew had a very fine record. Besides outside meets there was intramural racing, not only dining the weekends but also on Sunday when anybody who knew a little about sailing could race. The outside meets were with Pomfret and the Schools Racing Asso- ciation which were both Won very handily. The season was highlighted when Bob Crocker and Don McPherson ventured their skill at M. I. T. They took second place among many representatives from other schools such as Andover and Exeter. The sailing squad was expertly coached by Messrs. Maxwell, Gray, Russell, and Hutchinson. For all concerned it was a very worthwhile and enjoyable season. afzsifgzy Basgefgaff Front row, left to right-Duffy, Evans B.. Hoagland R., Pariseau QCapt.1. Wickenden, Shaw. Second row--Mr. Dibble. The year 1956 turned out to be an excellent one for the Varsity Basketball team. With three players returning from last yearis team, Mr. Dibble was able to build a well-balanced team. The Varsity emerged with a record of 12 wins and only 3 defeats, losing only to the Harvard Freshmen, Wo1'ceste1' Academy, and Swain School of Design in the last game by two points. They won their first seven games which included such teams as Thayer Academy, Mass. Maritime, and Andover, before they lost to the Harvard Freshmen. The highlight of the season came when they defeated Andover 71-58. They went on to defeat Thayer again, Brown Freshmen, Provi- dence Country Day, and Arlington High School before meeting defeat by a strong Worcester team. They ended up the season by winning over Governor Dummer, Sippican Indians, and Hebron Academy, while losing to Swain School. Led through the whole year by Captain Dick Pariseau, this team will be remembered as one of the finest teams ever to play at Tabor. js Eaigefgaff Front row. left to right-Barren. This year the V. Basketball team had an excellent schedule. It consisted of 18 games of which half were played at home. Mr. Bufiinton, in his iirst year as V. coach did a marvelous job with the material he had. Though the record in wins and losses was not im- pressive, the team lost 5 games by one or two points. This did not get the team morale down. Their spirit, team-play, and determination to win was kept right up through the last game. There is no one player to point out, but the leadership of Co-Captains Ed Kiernan and Herb Blake was valuable to the team. This team can look back upon a successful season. On the whole, the junior Basketball team had a line season, although this could hardly be said by just looking at the won and loss record. It seemed that the ajuniorsv weren't quite lucky enough this year because two or three times they were beaten by one or two points. A great deal of credit should go to Coach Stewart. It was coaching and patience that were responsible for the few wins the juniorsv were able to pull out. No one or two players can be mentioned for particularly fine play because most of the time it was a team effort. But, certain credit should go to those who deserve it. Among these were: Sherin, Captain Odermatt, Fireman and Leonard. Every team must have substitutes no matter what caliber of ball they play. Without them some of the games could not have been won. Among these were: Corcoran, DuPuy, Saunders, Meenan, P. Motion and Dowling. 6555 'ZKECICJS 'Zi Kneeling-Batterson, Turner, Riseman. Standing--Brien. Spirit is an integral part of any schoolg without it a school becomes merely a factory of learning. It is true that a certain amount of spirit is always present in a school, but it often takes some external stimulation to bring this spirit to the surface. This stimulation is the job of the cheer- leaders. Not only does the cheering at football and basketball games give the teams a lift, it also has the effect of bringing the student body closer to- gether in a stronger bond of unity. It is with a great deal of pride that the faculty and students of Tabor congratulate the cheerleaders on a job well done. 'zuiasu Front row. left to right-Swett CCapt.l, Mr. Luchini, Crawford. In the following matches against Cranston High School, Perkins Institute, Needham High School, and YVorcester Academy the team came up with impressive victories. After losing a heartbreaker at Roxbury Latin School 19-17, the team wrestled what was probably its best of the season and upended Moses Brown 28-12. The boys worked hard scraping and painting the bottoms and top- sides of the Mercurys and the Catboats. 2 Occasionally the Boat Shop worked afternoons helping on the re- novating of the inain cabin of the Bestevaer.
