Laps around the field, run- ning in place and other exercises were only part of the training the team was getting. The will to win was being instilled within them bw words of encouragement from the coaches Then came the hurricane to rob the players of shoes, helmets, and ex en the use of the field The school had to be reyuvenated Exercise changed from the calisthenics to mooring boats and sandpapering tables. W'hen practice was resumed, the team had work to do to mas- ter the tricky tactics which Mr. Thompson knew were necessary for such a light team. Results of this work showed when the team moved to victory oxer Portsmouth Priory and Thayer The next game, that with our ancient and most difhcult foe, Mos es Brown, was lost Outweighed though not outclassed, Tabor was defeated by a better team that day the only loss of the season .xt XX .it r mu nt, um wus r tt MII' Jr 11 ii ou li m t, .xr in im .1 N .llt V . r, - 1 . Lillard, Jr. To climax a great year in sports was the job before the baseball squad, and the players did ably in realizing this objective. Despite the two defeats suffered at the begin- ning of the season, the team settled down to win six successive games. The main reasons for these triumphs were the consistent pitching of Ken Conway and the cooperative spirit of the entire squad The first games revealed the team s potentialities The veterans Con way, Snell Pollan Cobb and the newcomers Jones and Riley worked well together and learned to play smart baseball Marked progress was indicated by the fact that the sum of the team s error column did not grow larger. Early in the sea- son the team was weak in hitting, but, later in the year, the team de- veloped real batting punch. With Conway on the mound, a tight in- Held, a fast outfield, and a trio of Sluggers, the team was the best in many years.
