Lowering the flag. omy ey i an? 4: “Guess where we've been!” Each month, one of our preschool or elementary classes invites parents to join them for lunch. Everyone enjoys the food and the fellowship. The sixth grade boys share the responsibility of raising and lowering the flag each day. Field trips are for learning, but they can be fun, too. Our preschool classes enjoyed a tour of a local hospital this year. They, along with the first grade, also enjoyed visiting our shut-ins. Elementary classes visit the local Science Center and travel to Charlotte’s Discovery Place; they also visit Biltmore House, the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, the Schiele Museum in Gastonia, and other places of interest. Matthew Colvard and Greg Page served on Safety Patrol this year, helping to direct traffic and keep students safe on the school grounds. 67

RELIES fil teres, parts ey P 2 ae “ae g | Coaches: Mrs. Van Nance, Mr. Gerald Page, Brad Hearn, Scott Jackson. (Not pictured: Mr. Van Nance.) Assistants: Todd Hicks, Karston Danner. Referees: Mr. Frank Ridley, Mr. Richard Teague. (Not pictured: Peter Teague, Timekeeper.) For some of us Saturday morning provides our one opportunity for the week to catch an extra forty winks. This is not the case for the folks involved in the elementary basketball program. When Saturday, 9:00 A.M. arrives, you'll find students, parents, coaches, and officials busily involved in learning, supporting, encouraging, and teaching basketball skills and good sportsmanship. The progress that can be seen is often remarkable. One day a child who could hardly dribble the ball in the beginning drives down the court and scores a lay-up. That’s a rewarding experience. Thanks to all those who participate in the program helping to train tomorrow’s leaders. 69
