Unity can separate a winning team from a losing one, and a successful class from a divided one. Unity can change many conflicting attitudes into one positive attitude. It can produce a oneness of spirit that is so important to a Christian school. Through much experience our class has found this to be true, and we hope we have encouraged future classes by our example. DEDICATION The Senior Class would like to dedicate this year’s edition of the TRUMPET to a man who has long meant a Jot to our class. Having been our teacher since ninth grade and our homeroom teacher for two years, we have grown very close to him. Not only a great teacher and a good friend, he is an example of what a spiritual leader should be. Little did he realize when he was a student at Tabernacle, the co-editor of its first yearbook, and a member of its first graduating class that he would one day return as a teacher and have the twelfth edition of the TRUMPET dedicated to him. Any time youare ready for a game of basketball or tennis, he’s always good for one. We are enlightened nearly ev- ery day by his sports updates. And if it’s food you want, he’s never without his “Cupcake.” Our 1988 yearbook is gratefully dedicated to Mr. Dan Kistler. ADMINISTRATION Rev. G. Right? Well, maybe we did look a little different back then, but not much has changed. As young children we looked forward to the future — starting school, moving up to high school, and finally waiting for graduation. Now that it is here, most of us have mixed emotions. It is very frightening to be leaving a place that has been a “home” for most of us for so long. Since change is a part of growing up, we look forward to our even broader futures — whether they hold college, jobs, or even marriage. Present interests don’t always indicate future roles. We look forward to seeing what these preachers, shoppers, bikers, and car lovers will be in a few more years. 14 CAROL DAWN THOMAS “I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.” Psalm 130:5 TAMMI SHELENE WALKER “That the trial of your faith, being much more pre- cious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.” c I Peter 1:7 16 TIMOTHY WAYNE UNDERWOOD “In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:6 fr0omne tyr atta = olunks JOSANNE LYNETTE ZALEWSKI “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5 IN MEMORY OF Brother Ed Roupe No man’s life is an island unto himself. Rather, all about him are the lives of others who are influenced by his presence. Our hands are joined, our heads are bowed and our hearts are overflowing for the lasting influence that God’s servant, Brother Ed Roupe, has had upon us all. I miss him as a friend as well as a fellow-laborer in the ministry, but I know that he has arrived safely home. The greatest day in the life of a Christian is when his faith becomes sight and his hope becomes fruition. Brother Ed’s final farewell ushered him into the presence of the Lord. When all my labors and trials are o’er And I am safe on that beautiful shore, Just to be near the dear Lord I adore Will through the ages be glory for me. — Pastor Randy Shook HE MAKETH NO MISTAKE My Father’s way may twist and turn, My heart may throb and ache, But in my soul I’m glad I know, He maketh no mistake. My cherished plans may go astray, My hopes may fade away, But still I’ll trust the Lord to lead, For He doth know the way. Tho night be dark and it may seem That day will never break, I’ll pin my faith, my all in Him. He maketh no mistake. There’s so much now I cannot see, My eyesight’s far too dim, But come what may, I'll simply trust And l!eave it all to Him. For by and by the mist will lift, And plain it all He’ll make; Through all the way, tho dark to me, He made not one mistake. — Author unknown - MR. JAMES EDWARD ROUPE Mr. Roupe went to be with the Lord during surgery on October 27, 1987, following an automobile accident ten days earlier on his sixty-second birthday. Always doing for others rather than himself, he was on his way to Charlotte’s Douglas Airport to catch a plane for Florida where he was to check on the purchase of some vans for our school. He became a part of our school staff as full-time mechanic in July of 1980, having given many hours on a part-time basis for several years prior to this. He came to the rescue of many a student, teacher, pastor, missionary, and evangelist. Loved and respected by everyone whose path he crossed, he will be greatly missed. ihe JUNO aan CLASS OFFICERS Mark Cody Chaplain Clay Powell President Mark Turner Vice-President Angie Skerjanec Secretary Sophia Wilson Treasurer Kim Amundson Sonya Berry Dawn Brawley Jodi Buff Donna Clark Mark Cody Amy Dellinger Jason Duroy Mark Gill Dana Jackson 18 Thomas Jones ‘Jeromie Moser | Clay Powell Angela Self Angie Skerjanec Shannon Snipes Keith Tomblin Mark Turner Shannon Wilson Sophia Wilson Juniors begin the day by “studying?” literature. For a number of years, the junior-senior high school students and their teachers have made their annual trek to the Wilds at the beginning of each school year. It is a time of fun and activity, as you can see below. But the real purpose of the week, which cannot be so easily pictured, is clearly seen in the souls saved and the lives changed through the preaching of God’s Word. Jon shows us how it’s done. 28 CHAPEL TIME Rev. Randy Shook Mr. Blair Berkley Chapel Pianists: Amy Ridley, Jason Duroy, Clay Powell It is not only our privilege to have Pastor Shook and Mr. Berkley speak for us in chapel but also | to be challenged from God’s Word each week by one of our male faculty members. Mr. Gary Hoffman Mr. Dan Kistler Mr. Eddie Riley 30 I tne sates tase eae Atay sind erecta Ce ey eee en ee ee ee ee hte eee It is my privilege to preach the Word of God to our high schoolers during two of our three weekly chapel services. God honors the faithful preaching of His Word and has promised to stir hearts to faith and salvation and spiritual growth through Christ-honoring preaching. “So shall my Word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall ... prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11) God never acts in vain, but always with purpose and plan. The Word of God originates in the heart of God and makes its way into our lives as we read or hear it. There is no greater privilege than that of learning God’s Word. There is no greater calling than that of preaching His Word. There is no greater blessing than that of listening to God’s messenger. There is no greater opportunity than that of being a “doer of the Word.” The Bible will absolutely meet any and every need that a Christian has. It will give wisdom, power, love, strength, comfort, hope, vision, zeal, and a burden for lost souls. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to you high schoolers and your fine parents for the joy that is mine to stand with God’s Word in hand and have a small part in what God is doing in our lives and homes as together we walk in the light of His Word. Music }is a fair and glorious gift of God. I would not for the world forego my humble share of music... I am strongly persuaded that after theology there is no art that can be placed on a level with music; | for besides theology, music is the only art capable of affording peace and joy of the heart ... the devil | flees before the sound of music almost as much as before the Word of God.” — Martin Luther It is a great privilege for the members of the Symphonic Band to have a part in the ministry of music. | It’s fun, to be sure; but, beyond that, it is an activity that should truly count for eternity in a very real ) way. Through their many performances this year, including their third annual Spring Band Concert and their second annual tour (in Tennessee), band members had a chance to proclaim the Good News | to sinners, draw believers closer to the One Who died for them, and excite those believers to a greater j}and more zealous ministry. I had toyed around at the beginning of the year with a new name for the high school chorus. Several names came into mind, but none portrayed the image I wanted to get across. In fact, in one moment J of desperation, I even considered “The New and Improved High School Chorus”; but that sounded too much like a high-pressure sales pitch for laundry detergent. | Finally the name “Concert Chorale” was suggested — not an original name by any means, but one ‘that did the job. If you combine the meanings of the words “concert” and “chorale,” you have a definition for “concert chorale”: an organized group of singers performing in concord one with | another. In II Chronicles 5, Solomon is having the Ark of the Covenant placed in the newly-built Temple. | To mark this special occasion, the Levite singers and 120 trumpeters performed. There were possibly as many as 1,000 Levite singers. An amazing thing is recorded about this group of musicians. Verse 13 says that this multitude was as “one” and made “one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord.” I believe this makes reference to the fact that they were assembled for one purpose — to honor and glorify the Lord for His goodness. As a result of their singing and playing, the Temple was | filled with the glory of the Lord. This is my desire for the Concert Chorale. I pray that through our singing we will be able to fill the Temple — the individual hearts of Christians — with the glory of the Lord. After five years together (for most of © you), many hard practices, and multitudes of SUI- CIDES, our GOAL was accomplished. And what an accomplishment it was, beating two of the top teams in the state back to back to win the conference tourna- ment! Ladies, I cannot begin to describe the thrill it was for me to watch your tremendous performances this year. Your dependence on the Lord — without Whose help our championship would not have been possible — and your hard work, UNITY, and dedication were re- warded. It is very difficult to say “good-bye” to two fine se- niors. But, Dawn and Rhonda, God bless you. We love you and will greatly miss you both. As for those returning, continue your hard work. Your UNITY and dedication will make you champions in the future both on the court and off. Ladies, it has been a great honor for Coach Page, Coach Johnson, and me to work with you. Longfellow once said, “The race may not always go to the stronger or faster man, but will always go to the man who thinks he can.” This year’s team exemplifies that statement. We weren’t always the stronger or the faster team, but we showed the determination and the faith to succeed. With a 10-1-1 record, conference runner-up, and tour- nament championship, you proved that dedication and stamina always win out in the end. The most important achievement of this year’s team was the earning of the sportsmanship trophy. This trophy shows more than skill, more than a record, more than final scores; it shows a Christ-like testimony recognized by those whom you played. Everyone enjoys the food and the fellowship. The sixth grade boys share the responsibility of raising and lowering the flag each day. Field trips are for learning, but they can be fun, too. Our preschool classes enjoyed a tour of a local hospital this year. They, along with the first grade, also enjoyed visiting our shut-ins. Elementary classes visit the local Science Center and travel to Charlotte’s Discovery Place; they also visit Biltmore House, the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, the Schiele Museum in Gastonia, and other places of interest. Matthew Colvard and Greg Page served on Safety Patrol this year, helping to direct traffic and keep students safe on the school grounds. 67 . r { ELEMENTARY BASKETBALL Ce CLASN( oe eT HOOSIERS: Elizabeth Shook, Casey Conner, Sarah Bur-_ FLAMES: Henry Dalton, Mandy Phillips, Patsy Reitzel, | ris, Dusty Ellis, Barry Brookshire, Justin Bynum, Justin April Williams, Jeff Moore, Jason Mauney, Robert Re- Doherr, Meredith Harris, Daniel Kennedy. (Not pictured: Peter Teague, Timekeeper.) _ For some of us Saturday morning provides our one opportunity for the week to catch an extra forty winks. This is not the case for the folks involved in the elementary basketball program. When Saturday, 9:00 A.M. arrives, you'll find students, parents, coaches, and officials busily involved in learning, supporting, encouraging, and teaching basketball skills and good sportsmanship. The progress that can be seen is often remarkable. One day a child who could hardly dribble the ball in the beginning drives down the court and scores a lay-up. That’s a rewarding experience. Thanks to all those who participate in the program helping to train tomorrow’s leaders. 69 Elementary students especially look forward to American Heritage Day, which is held éach year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The costumes cover a wide range of characters — Indians, Pilgrims, Southern Belles, and even an occasional pumpkin or turkey! The games are a Jot of fun, too, and a good chance for students to practice sportsmanship and team effort. Our preschool and elementary classes are divided into two groups for chapel. The younger group meets each Wednesday; and upper elementary, each Thursday. They enjoy a variety of speakers and topics throughout the year. Pastor and Mrs. Shook, Mr. Berkley, and Mrs. Pat Kennedy are regulars — with missionaries like Mrs. Alan Berry participating when they’re available. 70 TRUMPET STAFF Jon Shook, Editor; Dawn Cook, Co-Editor; Josanne Zalewski, Business Manager; Kim Doherr, Advertising Manager; Rhonda Shook and Tammi Walker, Activities; Kathy Jo Seagle and Scott Jackson, Sports; Brooke Canipe, Lori Conley, Julie Smith, Derrick Holland, and Tim Underwood, Classes; Carol Thomas, Typist; Brad Hearn, Photographer.
