But the Lord is always with us and will give us the strength to stand alone as His children. As the Class of 1987 graduates, we leave behind our ’87 TRUMPET with its theme “Vigilance.” We appreciate the efforts of the faculty and staff of TBCS in our behalf. We hope this yearbook will help you to look back and remember their hard work and dedication. Give heed to Hebrews 13:17: “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls... ” ADMINISTRATION ine Dedication We are privileged to dedicate this year’s TRUMPET to a man who has shown great vigilance throughout his life. He takes time to talk with students individually when the need for help arises. In his desire to begin new classes, he has unselfishly given of his time and energy. His efforts, which are greatly appreciated, have helped people to grow closer to him during his years of service here. One of the greatest assets to his work, character, and personality is his loving wife. Her friendliness, concern, and dedication support him in the huge task he has undertaken. He is a shining example of a true Christian to students, parents, and co-laborers. We, the Senior Class of 1987, are pleased to dedicate our edition of the TRUMPET to Mr. Blair Berkley. Randy Shook Mr. Blair Berkley CHAPEL TIME The family unit is the most important structure in any society. Families that love the Lord and are serving Him always evidence warmth, love, and kindness. Home — areal home — is where one feels wanted, needed, and appreciated while receiving the encouragement, training, and discipline to be what God desires. Chapel time on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday is when Tabernacle Baptist High sits down together as a family. It is my privilege to preach to the “family”. Nothing is as challenging as the truths of Scripture. Paul admonishes Timothy, “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” The goal of every Christian should be to honor and glorify the Lord. It takes a lot of faith and encouragement to accomplish that. Good homes are filled with encouragement, and I pray and desire that “fam- ily time” at school will always be a time of preaching and encourage- ment. “Preach the Word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, re- buke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” II Timothy 4:2. Pastor Shook Mr. Gary Hoffman Rev. Eddie Sapoch We enjoyed a special chapel service just before Christmas. Mrs. Ridley, Miss Touchton, and Mrs. Kennedy provided special music; and Rey. There were the usual annual performances: American Heritage Day, the Christmas Program (ending with the spine-tingling “Christmas Festival” by Leroy Anderson), the Spring Arts and Science Festival, and High School Graduation. In addition, the band gave its second annual Spring Concert, featuring a wide variety of selections. Never-to-be-forgotten was the unbelievable “Concerto Gross,” starring our principal, Mr. Berkley, and two “extin- guished” senior soloists. This year’s biggest event, however, was our first annual Band Tour with performances in four states in five days. But there was time for relaxation — a day at Six Flags over Georgia. The trip was a great opportunity for ministry, fellowship, and for meeting new peo- ple. 1986-87 also marked the development of the “Band News” into a full-blown literary travesty — delighting, infuriating, tickling, inspiring, and educating readers from Greenville, S.C., to Hammond, Indiana, and from the Bus Garage to the Band Annex. Mr. Bloodworth feels that this was easily the best band T. C. S. has ever had and wishes to commend each member for his hard work! Farewell to our four seniors: Randy Setzer (5 years), Scott Phelps (6 years), Steven Teague (6 years), and Gary Eaker (8 years!). The band will surely miss them. God gave us music as a special gift from Him as a means of communicating spiritual truths and ideas as well as simply enjoying what He has provided. When students learn the value of good music and how to enjoy the best of musical literature, they are better able to communicate God’s truths to others and are themselves enriched spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. Music is without a doubt one of the great motivators of today’s youth. We at Tabernacle Christian School seek to build in each student an appreciation for Godly Christian music as well as wholesome secular music. Participation in vocal music groups is one of the ways students become familiar with what good music is and how they can produce it and be a blessing and encouragement to fellow students and their own churches and communities. Success does not always mean winning the competitions or being “the best,” but it does mean doing your best and be- ing a blessing and encouragement to others and showing the love of Christ as we use our talents to glorify God Who gave us this wonderful gift. Not only did God bless with another great season and an overall record of 17-1, but He gave us the best trophy of all at the Blue Ridge Conference Tournament — the Sportsmanship Award. The strong relationship that you guys have developed over the years, the joys and sorrows that you have shared, and the feelings of “family” unity that exist among you have certainly culminated in a team I am proud to be a part of. To Steven and Gary — who have been a special blessing to the coaches and the team — as you depart, may you remain a vital part of God’s army as you have been a vital part of this team. Best wishes as you graduate and go separate ways. May God’s blessings be with you, and may you enjoy a life of happiness and success. I am grateful for all your hard work and your sweet attitudes. You are all fine Christian examples. Each of you gave a hundred percent every game and were rewarded for it. Our successes in the Wilson Tournament (Third Place) and the Conference Tournament (Second Place) are very special to me. I can’t begin to describe how it felt to defeat last year’s champion, Tabernacle-Morganton, and to see you play so well. Congratulations to two of my captains, Dawn and April, on your selections to the All-Conference and All-Tournament teams. You both played a great tournament, and the awards were well-de- served. This is the most important aspect of the work done by the coaches and officials during elementary basketball games. In addi- tion, the students learn the rules of the game and gain valuable experience as they practice and sharpen their athletic skills. We say “Thank You!” to the officials and coaches who guide and direct the program and to the parents who take the time to come and support their children. American Heritage Day is observed at Tabernacle every year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Students are encour- aged to dress in costumes that depict a person or a period in American history. Costumes are judged and awards are present- ed in several age groups. Parents and other guests are invited to an assembly in the school gymnasium. The high school band and vocal groups per- form, and each elementary class gives a brief presentation witha Thanksgiving theme. After the assembly, students are divided into two teams — Pilgrims and Indians — and join enthusiastically in a number of games. Once a month, from October through April, a kindergarten or elementary class has the opportunity to invite their parents to eat lunch with them. The students help to make decorations and everyone enjoys the meal and fellowship. 70 Fourth-grade parents enjoy lunch with their children.
