For Reference Not to be taken from this library 1976 BENGAL VOLUME IV TABBHIGH SCHOOL TABB, VIRGINIA Desiderata Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their storyc Avoid loud and aggressive persons they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own caieei, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the council of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imagining. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. 2 Introduction STUDENTS FACULTY ORGANIZATIONS SPORTS STUDENT LIFE COMMERCIALS INDEX WRAP-UP 6 Introduction 8 Introduction iUIIIIk:! 1 ' f| i 1 1 10 n We Prepare To Leave There is one word that sums up exactly what the Senior Class thought about all year long . . . Graduation. This far-away dream became a little more real when, in August, we took our seats in the Senior Lounge to argue about the Senior trip, prom and other essential activities. Prom was set for May 8th at the Bon Homme Richard with Sunny Days Revue providing the music, Disney World in Florida was the decided destination for the Senior Trip. Class colors, flower, song and motto were also chosen. The bicentennial colors of red, white and blue were picked and the class flower would be an orange rose. Stairway To Heaven” was the official song with The Theme From Mahogany” an unofficial first. The class motto stated the following, We hold the idea of today that will be the history of tomorrow” written by Peggy Thomberry. Seniors did join together to work on the Homecoming float, first at Kathy Redhair’s house, then at Robin Collins. In March, the class sponsored a slave sale” in which many seniors were auctioned off and, as many discovered, were forced to perform menial tasks. Seniors participated in many extra-curricular activities during the year and, in general, kept the name of the Class of ’76 alive as that of the best class in the school. The Junior Class began its active year by collect- ing a number of cans during the Christmas canned food drive, and winning the Christ- mas decorating contest. Emotion peaked at the Ring Dance mark- ing the class’s readiness to achieve leadership next year. Class Sponsors; Mrs. Freeman and Mr. James. Members of the class showed their spirit, however, by helping on the underclass float for homecoming and sell- ing magazines for the magazine drive. For many sophomores, the second year of high school proved to be a year of getting involved as individuals in student govern- ment, athletics, dramatics and club activities, .so that in the future they will be able to unite and prove that The Class of 78 is Great.” r ' Class Sponsors: Mrs. Tyree and Mr Hopson. Miller. A long and involved past which, began in Augusta County, now is taking on new dimensions as Assistant Superintendent of York County Public Schools and has opened up a future of high hopes. He attended Triplett Elementary School in Mt. Jackson and also Triplett High School. At VPI and UVA he received a B.S. and M.Ed. respectively. In Shenandoah County, he acted as the elementary school principal and later took over his first vice principal position of Harrisonburg High School. In September 1966, as York High School’s Principal, he handled the maelstrom of paperwork, duties and operation with such smoothness and success that when Tabb High School opened in 1972, he assumed the extremely respected and demanding role of Principal and was faced with the extraordinary task of putting a new Tabb High on it’s feet and kicking.” Presently acting as Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Miller enjoys the added administrative dimensions of his work now, but misses the personal contact and emotion he was so used to in the past. Mr. Miller will surely be missed and his presence will be felt indirectly if not directly. A truly dedicated man: Mr. Richard B. Miller. 50 Administrators Dedication Is Mr. Morris In One Word On February 2, 1976, Mr. Robert T. Morris became the second Principal of Tabb High School. Mr. Morris has been a life-long resident of Virginia except for a short time spent in New York and two drafted terms in the United States Army. He grew up on the family’s farm, fishing with his father and taking work available to him in the rural community. His father gave him some good advice which he passes on today, Learn to do anything that gives you an honest dollar.” This advice has enabled him to excel in all he has undertaken. Mr. Morris attended two high schools, Gloucester County Training School and Rappahannock Industrial Academy, with the intention of going into medicine. Later he decided it would be to his family’s advantage for him to teach. He also attended the College of William and Mary, Old Dominion University and Virginia State College, where he received his B.S. and M.S. In his spare time, Mr. Morris enjoys the company of his wife and son while he dabbles in farming and cooking, his favorite hobbies. We all want to wish continued good luck to Mr. Robert Morris in his coming years at Tabb High School. Administrators 51 Assistant Principals Make Daily Rounds Mr. Charles Cherry; Elizabeth City State College, Hampton Institute. Mr. Edwin Markoff; William and Mary, Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Maty, Old Dominion University. Besides their many responsibilities as Assistant Principals, Mr. Ed Markoff also holds the position as Tabb’s athletic and activities advisor, while Mr. Charles Cherry handles classroom instruction. Their constant attention helped to smooth the transition of Mr. Miller’s departure and Mr. Morris’ arrival. This is Mr. Cherry’s last year at Tabb for he had acquired the position of Principal at Queens Lake Intermediate. Mr. Markoff will still be found haunting Tabb’s halls with his big orange spirit” next year. Top Left: Mr. Markoff and Mr. Cherry in conference. Top Right: Mr. Cherry. The program is structured to present an inquiry approach into the nature of life and the properties of matter based upon the understanding of basic concepts. At the basic levels, emphasis is placed on human ecology, one of the major areas of interest in contemporary science. They started out the year with a slide-show presentation at orientation. The next big project was Homecoming. A bonfire, floats, homecoming queen and her court, along with a volkswagon march during half-time, highlighted the festivities. Films were shown the day before Halloween in the first Dracula Film Festival. November yielded a nightclub atmosphere as fellow students and teachers entenained the large crowd. With Christmas around the bend, a Christmas Ball was planned. This dance was the finale of a Christmas decoration contest. As the new year began, trees were planted to celebrate the Bicentennial. Cindy Behlmar was crowned Miss Tabb High in the pageant held in February. In celebration of the Bicentennial an assembly brought to light our nation’s 200th birthday that we honor this year. Excitement was paramount as a dance marathon was sponsored by SCA for the benefit of the Virginia Association for Retarded Citizens. Over $2000 was colleaed to go to this worthy cause. A Sadie Hawkins dance was the highlight of Sadie Hawkins day. Finally the women were put in charge. New officers were elected, and took over their offices to organize a Silent Film Festival. In conclusion, the SCA thanks you for your cooperation and hopes next year will be a tremendous success. Top Right: Chris Luke, President. This year’s Key Club participated in a multitude of service-oriented projects throughout the community. Key Clubbers aided workers in setting up the Patrick Henry Fair and the Bloodmobile at Tabb. Many members worked at the Virginia School for the Blind at Hampton, while others assisted at the York County Public Library. Running the concession stand for home basketball games and ushering for most school programs became major functions of the Key Club. Besides sponsoring two school dances, the club held a contest to find the Key Club Mr. Cool.” Finalists’ pictures, in their cool” poses, were sent to Sally Struthers where she picked Kyle Bateman to reign over THS as Mr. Key Club Cool.” Key Clubbers of the year: Pete Windham and Andy Deskins. Besides working to improve the community and Tabb High, the Keyettes have also participated in the required activities of District Keyettes. This year the Keyettes have done such things as worked at the Health Fair, sold mums at Homecoming, helped a needy family at Christmas and collected for the Heart Fund. Some of the Keyettes took part in the March of Dimes Walk-a-Thon. Keyettes sponsored Key-Etiquette Day. With their civic sponsors they had a Mother-Daughter night. The most recent project was the selling of jewelry for funds. In District Keyettes they participated in R.D.T., and sold candy. Next year they expect to have a better and more fullfilling year. Keyettes 77 The Tabb Tiger Band began the year, as always, appearing as the half-time entertainment for the at home” football games. All shows were well received by the audiences, but the Fifties” show and the Halloween” program were the highlights of football season. The Most Popular Band in Tidewater” award was presented to the Tiger Band by Radio Station WGH. Along with this honor went $1000 to spend on band instruments. Other awards included a first-place trophy at the Williamsburg Christmas Parade — for the third time in four years — and excellent ratings at the District VIII Band Festival. The trip to Canada proved to be the most exciting experience of the year. Each band member had to earn his way to Canada by selling oranges and grapefruit from Florida. Over 1900 boxes were sold and distributed throughout the area. Sunny Days Revue also extended its help and interest in sending the band to visit our northern neighbors. The band spent the first night of the trip in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and then traveled on to Toronto. After performing at the Applewood Heights Secondary School, the Tigers were off to Montreal for sight-seeing, and ended the trip with a concert at Independence Mall in Philadelphia. It was another successful year for Mr. Ironmonger and his bands. Tigers March To Canada 78 Band Stage Band Receives Superior Ratings This year’s Stage Band, under the direction of Percy Ironmonger, once again displayed its varied talents by participating in several events. The first concert was highlighted by a performance of the Alex Jenkins Quartet. For the fourth consecutive year the Stage Band received superior ratings at District VIII Festival. Tabb again received superior ratings, while senior Sandy HanccKk received an outstanding soloist” award. The Stage Band was always a welcome addition to many of Tabb’s student activities, as well as performing for many civic functions. In fact, if you happened to be at Tabb during the summer, they had already begun long hard hours of work in July. Above all, the girls learned to work as a team and what true dedication to an activity could be. With Jackie Adams as Captain and Peggy Steele as Co-Captain, the girls complimented the band by participating in half-time shows, concerts, parades and pep rallies. Not to be outdone, the Majorettes added a patriotic stars and stripes costume to their many uniforms. These outfits were first used a t the joint half- time show with York High. The culminating event was a trip to Canada at Easter with the Tabb Tiger Band. Five editions of the paper were printed this year, with the entire produaion process done at Tabb. Staff members not only colleaed information, wrote and proofread all copy and headlines, they also did all the layouts and offsetting in the graphics arts room. An effort was made this year to cover all the aspects of school news with a special page for club activities and classes. The number of pages was also increased from eight to twelve, with a final issue in June of sixteen pages including a front-page collage emphasizing seniors. The major accomplishment of the staff was producing the entire paper at Tabb. A special thanks must go to Mrs. Sharon Horton and her Steno II and Clerk Typist II class (especially Mary Henkel and Susie Irwin), along with phtotgraphers Mr. John Dawson, Steve Wilson, Anne Derby, Mark Christie, Roger Schemenauer, Shawn Jewel, Scott Stewart and artist David Copeland. The staff began work with approximately 30 members, all eager to get out of class to assist with picture taking. After the pictures were taken and after-school meetings were called, attendance began to slack off until there were only two actual staff members. Putting an entire yearbook together is never easy but it soon became increasingly difficult with an active staff of one. Many people did help by writing copy whenever possible. They are: Mr. Robert Anderson, Donna Clary, Mr. George Coulter, Mr. Stephen Deutsch, Mrs. Cindy Ford, Mr. Danny Holt, Mr. Ron Horton, Mr. George Jobson, Mr. Fred Mitchell, Mr. Arthur Roach, Mr. Sewell Rowley, Bobbie Ambrose, George Ballance, David Copeland, Ron Harris, Debbie Hesslink, Lee Jennings, Chris Luke, Karen Markoff, Kathy Rhodes, Terri Robbins, Tim Rowe, Jody Rowell, Bobbie Wagner and Dale Warden. Brenda Barnes contributed in planning, layouts and copy. I would also like to thank Mrs. Susie Harrell, Mr. Richard Joyce, Mr. Danny DeFalco and Mr. Robert Morris for their patience, even though the book was not finished until the end of June. Some of you may not be satisfied with this book. I hope you will keep that in mind next year when the announcement for new yearbook staff members is made. Seven new members were inducted into the society. Another tapping was held May 25, 1976 to induct qualifying juniors. Admittance into the National Honor Society is based on the leadership, scholarship, service and character of each student. They must maintain a 3.50 grade average. This year a new system was added to make the decision easier. Clubs and sports were arranged with certain point values, then points were given to students depending upon their participation in each activity. This also made qualifying more difficult. Career Team, AV Club, Sight and Sound Corps 99 Tigers Alive In ' 75 Tabb Tiger football began, as it always does, on a humid afternoon in August. Expectations were high because it was a known fact that this was the best group of returning players in Tabb’s history. But, as has been the case all too often in football, injuries took their toll. And what a toll! Several times during the season there were less than 20 players healthy enough to practice. The coaching staff must be given credit for not quitting on the team. The players were well aware that the coaches, no matter how acute their frustration might be, would always be with them, and that made it much easier to stick it out. The season was not without bright spots, however. There was Tabb’s first victory over the LaFayette Rams, a victory made much sweeter by the fact that it was won in Williamsburg with converted slot-back Dennis Pearce at quarterback. Other highlights included Pearce setting a state record with 43 pass receptions and along with defensive end John Kubesh, being named to the first-team all- district team. Expectations are high for next year due to the fact that the Tigers will be a member of the new AA York River District. But be the league AA or AAA, be the opponent Hampton or Poquoson, one thing is for certain: The Tabb Tigers will NEVER throw in the towel.” Eiottom: Coach Horton discusses the next play. Ronald Dillard was the leading scorer and led the team to a 7-13 regular season record and runner-up in the Wakefield Christmas Classic on December 19-20, 1975. The trophy awarded was the first for Tabb in basketball with Ronald Dillard also being selected Most Valuable Player in the tournament. Though the overall season record showed more losses than wins, the Tigers played the best basketball of the school history. Joe Dillard was second in scoring and led the team in rebounding. Though Tabb conceded a height advantage to most every opponent, the Tigers managed to pressure opponents with excellent defense lead by Lorenzo Moore, Garland Thornton, and Paul Furby. Consistent and encouraging, Wallace Dillard and Andy Deskins rounded out the squad that will return in 1976-77 to continue a winning and successful season. In all fairness to them, it should be noted that three of their personnel either did not participate in the season or did not finish out the year’s schedule. Members of this winning combination included seniors George Ballance, John Cinotto and Doug Lia; juniors Mike Meyers; and Jeff Kane, Greg Lia and Bill Treptow, all sophomores. Four players — Cinotto, Lia, Steiger and Treptow — represented Tabb at Sleepy Hole in Driver. With a final team total of 318, the team learned they had finished in a three-way tie for first with First Colonial and Kempsville. A two-hole playoff followed, with First Colonial and Kempsville eliminated on the first hole. Greg Lia birdied on the second hole and his teammates all parted. This was good for the title. Treptow also won the individual championship with a score of 71. Tigers competed at the State meet in Virginia Beach on May 24-25. Competition was keen, and Tabb came away with a sixth place finish. This was only 11 strokes from the winning score and four strokes from 3rd place. Congratulations to Coach Willard Hunt and his team for a super season.” Top: Team Members: J Cinotto, G. Lia, G. Best of Braodway featured the dynamic and persuasive singing of Richard Breen and Kathy Blevins. Pianist Tim Rowe showed a command of the eighty-eights, uncommon to a high school student. Recovering from a momentary fainting spell, Rowe summoned himself to the call, ' the show must go on!’ to give the performance of his life. Miss Tabb High 143 Although this year’s Senior Slave Sale was not a tremendous success money wise, it did raise underclass spirit. The purpose was two-fold — to assist the Tiger Band earn money for their trip to Canada, and to help the Senior class complete the funds for the prom. The first half of the Sunny Days show presented different members of the ensemble performing his or her special talent, both vocal and instrumental. The second act was. a complete change of pace — more informal and perhaps more appealing to the high school students. The highlight of the evening was the oldies but goodies” portion of the show, featuring such favorites as Little Richard, Sonny and Cher, The Righteous Brothers, The Everly Brothers and who will ever forget Charlie Cheek as The Monster Mash.” The group also returned in May to entertain at the Senior Prom. 1 48 Sunny Days Revue Seniors anxiously awaited the night of May 8th, the date set for Prom. At 9:00 that evening, couples began to slowly drift into the Bon Homme Richard to attend the last school dance.” Senior Superlatives were announced at 1 1 :00 and at midnight, a toast was presented to the Class of 76.” By 1 :00 the Fleet Room was once again quiet as seniors left to participate in the many planned and unplanned parties that would last throughout the night. Upon reaching Orlando, the group visited Circus World, but since it took approximately 5 minutes to tour the World,” many students decided to try new things. Some went shopping while others went to a Disco. Disney World was next on the agenda. On May 30th Daytona Beach was invaded by Tabb Tigers who had an intense desire to bake under the Florida sun. The trip home, to say the least, was a quiet one. Senior Trip 151 I r h I Friday, June 4, 1976, once again brought both Seniors and underclassmen to the gym to participate in Class Day. The class history was read by Robin Collins, Frank Arena, and Donna Harrison, followed by an original song for the class composed by Mary Jo Smith, Lynn Larson and Robin Smith. The Last Will and Testament was next by Mary Henkel, Richard Evans and Margie Sarver. Senior Superlatives were accented by the appearance of Mike Wirt wheeled in in a wheelchair and Mike Spencer wearing a mask. Darlene Thomas continued to sing The Way We Were,” even though the pianist stopped playing and Phoebe Quaterman recited a comedy skit on the rising costs of graduation. The program ended with a skit by the Senior Band Members with several featured dancers . . .J. W. Simpson, David Nuckols, Ricky Stanley, Mike Spencer, Siggy Jones, and Lee Jennings. Classday . . . The Class of 76 is, as everyone knows, the first class to complete four full years at Tabb High. While this in itself brought a cenain sense of excitement and joy, there was still a small amount of doubt and sorrow. Top Left: Tabb cheerleaders worked to make posters to welcome the students from Applewood. Sayings such as, Yall come back” and Eh” were heard all week throughout the halls of Tabb. I 1 72 Applewood Heights Bond and Chorus Band, majorettes and cheerleaders were once again able to see their new friends from Canada. The Applewood Heights Band and Chorus came to Tabb via Washington to play a concert at the new Yorktown Victory Center. They were the first foreign band to give a concert at the center. Before the Yorktown concert, both groups and the Stage Band gave two concerts for the Tabb High student body, which was one of the best assemblies given at Tabb — both by the Canadians and the conduct of THS students. A guided tour, by Mr. Roach, through Williamsburg was a thrill for both Applewood and Tabb students. Saturday was to be spent at Busch Gardens, but rain changed these plans. Most students could be seen strolling through the Coliseum Mall with the Canadians searching for Virginia is for lovers” T-shirts. That night a dance was held in the commons in honor of the visitors. Sunday morning came much too soon as, once again, it was time to say good-bye. Last minute pictures and addresses were exchanged and promises to visit each other again soon as the buses headed back to Canada. Juniors Gain Control Of Lounge On June 11, 1976, even before the Class of 76 had officially graduated, the Class of- invaded their new Senior Lounge. During homeroom, while underclassmen were patiently awaiting the tone for first period. Juniors held a ribbon-cutting ceremony opening the lounge to them. Juniors in the Tabb Tiger band marched through the commons and down the hall playing the Fight Song” to emphasize the occasion. Class President Debbie Wilburn, cut the orange ribbon surrounding the lounge, opening it to a mad rush of Juniors. But alas, all good things must come to an end — at least during class time — and the new Seniors found, just as the ones before them, Mr. Markoff’s mighty voice ordering them out of the lounge and on to class. Top: Debbie Wilburn cuts the ribbon to officially open the lounge. Middle: The usual mad rush to get a seat. Bottom: Ours at last. Senior Lounge Opening 1 73 AbUitt. Angela Ad.imowhki. 11 Adanl .
