Emerson 10 Introduction 12 Educators f The relaxed and personalized student- teacher relationships from last year were carried over to this year by Tabb High faculty members. Not only did they lend themselves to sharing their knowledge, but the faculty played an important role in establishing a successful extracurricular program at Tabb. The interest shown in the students by the teachers at Tabb is one of the qualities which helps it remain one of the top academic schools on the peninsula. I ) Educators 13 ED UCA TORS Administrators Guide Student Growth The 73-74 school year brought quite a change in the operation of Tabb High. Because of the casual atmosphere created by the structure, students found it easy to forget that they were in a school rather than Grand Central Station. As a means of reminding them, Mr. Richard B. Miller, in his second year as principal of Tabb, found it necessary to instigate preventive measures. Breaking away from some of his liberal ideas of running the school, Mr. Miller called upon the good ol’ tardy bell” to eliminate last minute stragglers. Other problems were taken care of through this addition also. So, with disciplinary actions pretty well underhand, Mr. Miller had more time to devote to teachers’ as well as students’ needs, ideas, and suggestions in an open-minded fashion. 14 Principal Providing sound leadership and unending dedication to their students, Assistant Principals, Mr. Ed Markoff and Mr. Charles Cherry cooperated in facilitating the many varied school functions at Tabb. Among other responsibilities, Mr. Markoff served as Athletic Director and Mr. Cherry as Activities Director. The 73-74 school session furnished an opportunity for the concerned administrators to work with many first time events at Tabb High and present a variety of effective programs to fulfill all student body needs. Assistant Principals 15 i I Secretaries Keep Tabb Running Smoothly Contrary to what most people think, a secretary’s day consists of more than just taking shorthand, typing letters, and answering telephones, especially if they happen to be employed at Tabb High. Mrs. M. Fox, (TOP RIGHT) is secretary of Guidance and handles the registration of new students, transcripts and correspondence. As attendance secretary, Mrs. D. Burcher, (TOP LEFT) takes care of attendance, textbooks and is secretary to Mr. Markoff. Serving as bookkeeper and receptionist as well as secretary to Mr. Cherry are the responsibilities of Mrs. J. Allamby, (BOTTOM LEFT) secretary in the general office. Mrs. Barnes, (BOTTOM RIGHT) is secretary to Mr. Miller. Her duties include keeping the school rolls up to date, finances, and reports. 14 I 16 Secretaries Guidance Channels Students Abilities Helping to guide students along the right tracks, the Guidance Department has played a large role in the two years that Tabb has been opened. The counselors not only did the usual straightening out of schedules, but took it upon themselves to coordinate trade oriented assemblies. Mrs. W. Luck, (TOP LEFT) served as head of the department as well as counselor to the sophomores. The advising and dealing with scheduling problems of the juniors was left with Mrs. R. Wyche, (TOP RIGHT). Mr. G. Haase (BOTTOM LEFT) was bogged down with sending senior transcripts as counselor to the graduating class. Mrs. A. Cook (BOTTOM RIGHT) saw to it that the freshman class got started on the right foot. I Guidance 17 Directors Play an Important Part in School Operations Department leaders, Mr. M. Wollard of Vocational (TOP RIGHT), Mrs. Elizebeth Smith of Humanities (BOTTOM) and Mr. T. Doggins of Math — Science (TOP RIGHT) provided the overall coordination of activities for smooth running departments. Items such as finding available classrooms, keeping records of textbooks, and instructional material, assisting guidance with scheduling, arranging field trips and speaking engagements were a few of the vital behind the scene jobs that these dedicated directors carried out. 18 Directors IRC Is More Than a Resource Center Books, books, and more books! In the middle of them all you might be able to find Mrs. N. Morgan (TOP) or Mrs. C. Ford (BOTTOM RIGHT). Reading. Probably not. They’d most likely be checking them out, reshelving them or perhaps arranging them in a display. With the help of Mrs. H. Hubbard (BOTTOM LEFT) the librarians have made the IRC more than just a resource center, but have added personality to the room with posters, displays, and bulletin boards, enabling students to expand their knowledge through other means. Librarians 19 Nurse, Cafeteria Staff and Aids Provide Necessary Services for Tabb Smiling, Mrs. Hawkins (TOP) carried out her duties as Nurse at Tabb. Keeping medicine for students, administering first aid in emergencies and helping out with the Blocxlmobile kept her constantly on the move. } With complaints far outnumbering compliments, the cafeteria staff took it all in stride as they provided balanced lunches and food for various extracurricular activities. With the hustle and bustle of a school day, we often forget to express our appreciation, so to them we say a big THANKS! 20 Nurse, Cafeteria Staff Aids Assist Tabb Faculty With the aids helping out in different aspects of student life, the work load was lessened for all those involved. From seeing that the book room was kept in order, to running off tests, everything was done in an effort to keep Tabb operating smoothly. Mrs. Bradshaw, Mrs. McLean, Mrs. Englehart. (TOP L to R) Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Wiltshire. (BOTTOM L to R) were the aids. Mrs. Ivy. (BOTTOM RIGHT) was the visiting teacher, helping out with homebound students. Aids 21 Mr. James D. Mr. William VanderPas Distributive Education, D.E. Club Educators 29 30 People f 1973 brought with it a new breed of high school students. We conducted ourselves as individuals in most cases, but we also found it necessary to follow the crowd in others. The senior class provided sound leadership through the exp eriences they had been confronted with the past three years. Sophomores and Juniors contributed new ideas that further signified progress within the new school, while the Freshman class took on the challenges of the upperclassmen and gave of themselves to Tabb High School. ) People 31 PEOPLE Money-making Projects Highlight Senior Year The Senior class saw the 1973-74 school year in a different light from underclassmen. Homecoming, basketball sweetheart, athletic events and other extra-curricular activities took on new meanings. The conclusion of each activity meant a step further toward our entrance into the frightening and challenging society. Trying to keep this in the back of our minds for awhile, the class worked together to insure a great and memorable year. Money-making projects became an important Senior undertaking. Selling candy, pennants, and tumblers, helped to defray the cost of the prom and the Senior trip. Nonetheless, there was still graduation announcements, caps and gowns, and application fees to be paid for. It’s true that your senior year is the most expensive, but in the long run it’s worth every penny. As graduation drew nearer the seniors realized that that was it — fun and games were now over and the trials and tribulations that had been suffered were a part of the past, but an important pan. The experience that had been gained, both good and bad would play an important part in their futures, but now it was time to say good-bye to those four years — the best years of our lives. The empty wooden desks, I see, But nothing makes a sound. It’s over now — your high school days — time for graduation. It’s over now — your schoolgirl craze — time for celebration. Should I laugh or should I cry, the years went by so fast. All the work and fun I had are shadows in the past. Goodbye to lockers slamming shut and passes in the halls. Every weeknight in a rut with homework — climbing walls. Goodbye to teachers straight and gocxl we’ll miss your tardy passes You know we did the best we could to credit in your classes. So now the world waits outside, I want to be a part. And as I leave my high school years I also leave my heart. But as I do I’ll take much more than books could ever give, I take the spirit of Seventy-Four throughtout each day I live. A Step Before Stardom Backed by good student officers and sponsors the juniors were off to a good start and concentrated all their efforts on the Junior Ring Dance. To raise money for the Ring Dance, juniors were allowed to use Bailey Field’s concession stan d for all home football games. The Ring Dance was held at the Sheraton and the decorations consisted of a giant class ring which will be handed down from junior class to junior class. It’s to be a reminder of the class of ’75. Other class honors went to a junior when Diane Vaughn won the Miss Tabb High Pageant. There were also five other juniors in the semi-finals. In the SCA’s Christmas Food Drive, the juniors held the lead and donated money to help the needy. The Sophomores of ’74 had one big advantage over last year, they weren’t Freshmen. Perhaps this is what sparked the enthusiasm of the Sophomore class, for they led the way in supporting their school. Taking their determination from last year and adding some more, they proved their merit by heading the magazine drive. From this project, they gained a proceed of $646.88. To conclude the Basketball Sweetheart contest, the class sponsored a semi-formal dance. This was held on Feb. 16, with the band Smoke.” The dance was the first dance of the year sponsored by a class which goes to show the spirit of the Sophomores. Also, some students found the adjustment from intermediate to high school, and from chief to low man on the totem pole quite a transition. Nonetheless, Freshmen learned from their mistakes, and by physically striving and socially relating, they brought about a feeling of belonging to the Tabb High community amongst the Freshman class. Not only did students enjoy the evening but also the faculty members who attended found it quite enjoyable. It was truly a memorable experience for all. 88 Ring Dante Rin Dame S9 Once Upon a Mattress Opens With . . . Wandering Minstrels. Combining the musical talents of Mr. Will iam Tew and Mr. Percy Ironmonger with the technical direction of Miss Barbara Zalumas, the musical played to a sell-out house.’’ Set in a fourteenth century castle, complete with a moat, the story line revolved around a very unhappy prince in search of a wife, and a meddling mother who was determined not to have him marry. Once the casting was done, the search for I4th century props arose. After numerous school announcements and countless rummages through attics, cellars and Salvation Army Centers, a colorful array reached the wardrobe crew under the brilliant creativity of Mrs. Johnnie Little. The full cast and crew incorporated some 150 people, the many talents of the art classes under Mrs. Sherrie Hodges and crew design classes of Mr. Peter Pugh. The musical was truly a tremendous success and lived Happily Ever After.’’ 90 Musical Tabb High Elects Delegates to Girls and Boys State BOYS’ STATE: CHUCK MASSER, DOUG PETERS, JAMES PIERCE, SCOTT PETERSON Within the State of Virginia, for one week in each year, two new States come into being. Held at the Hilton 1776 in Williamsburg, the events of their senior year were reminisced in a night of festive activity. In the midst of shimmering gowns and colorful tux, the seniors had time to reflect on the past years while dancing to the mellow music of the band. Friday morning they stopped at Lion Country Safari in Georgia and then on to the Hotel that afternoon. Friday evening they could stay at the hotel or go to see the Atlanta Braves play. Saturday it was off to Six Flags and a chance to ride the long- awaited Great American Scream Machine, (one of the largest roller coasters around!) Sunday meant back to 6 Flags, a quick stop in Underground Atlanta and a long trip home. The exhausted and flat broke” group arrived back at Tabb Monday at 6 a.m. All who went, including the 5 chaperones admit to having a fantastic trip. 96 Sr. Trip On June 6, 1974 there was another first at Tabb High — the Class of ’74 held their class day program. Many unique performances highlighted the morning. Mike Melo and Marsha Thomas reminisced the class history from sophomore days. Senior A Cappella members sang and Senior Superlatives were awarded. Lynn Brooks and Lisa Kehrer read the Last Will and Testament, followed by singing performances by class members including an original song entitled Hanging Out Hanging In.’’ Dave Caldwell and Kim Smith predicted the future of many seniors. The mixed Locker Room Choir sang and a poem, Goodbye” was read. The newly written Alma Mater was introduced to the student body by Donna Newsome. After the program, seniors were dismissed from school. C1.1.SS Day 97 June ’74 Marks Tabb’s First Graduation Happiness, sadness and nostalgia blended to create Tabb’s first graduation exercises. For some it was the end of their best years, for others it marked the beginning of a new and altogether different phase of life. Belena Skievaski, valedictorian and Lynn Childers, salutatorian gave encouraging speeches to their fellow class members. The class president, Emily McGuire gave appreciation gifts to the class sponsors and the three principals. Music was provided by the band and the A Cappella Choir. 98 Graduation Anticipation of the future and memories of the past intermingled in the minds of the seniors as diplomas were received and tassels were turned. . As the crowd rose in respect, the Class of ’74 marched out into the world, diplomas in hand — some with tears and others with laughter — but all with their heads held high. i Graduation 99 100 Artivities Students enthusiastically got involved in the various after school clubs at Tabb. Charters and constitutions having been adopted the year before enabled members to plunge into their activities from the start. The FHA bazaar, the SCA’s iron-on patch sale, and the Keyette donut sale were just a nucleus of the many happenings of the different groups. Unfortunately, with the onset of the energy crisis, the school board found it necessary to eliminate the activity buses, which put a dam- per on meetings and club participation. With the support of very few fans, team members strived to bring recognition to this little known sport. Concentration and endurance were the chief requirements. Under the coaching of Mr. George Coulter, these skills were developed and perfected. Although most of their efforts ended in team losses, individual runners placed high in the standings. Bringing recognition to girls’ athletics at Tabb was one of the biggest accomplishments of the Girls’ Basketball Team. From the first two or three games, spectators saw that a championship team was in the makings. Victory after victory brought the girls closer to qualifying for District. Tournament play produced tough competition, but nonetheless Tabb defeated all of its opponents and came out on top. To be exact, FIRST IN DISTRICT! TEAM MEMBERS: (KNEELING) S. Brown, D. Slede, K. Yvette Knott was voted outstanding offense, Jan Oesterle most outstanding player, and Kerrie Breen outstanding defense. Despite the loss of the senior height, skill, and experience, next year’s team has great potential. Girls’ Basketball 135 Varsity Team Shows Improvement Unpredictable best describes the 1973 Basketball Season. Although the losses heavily outweighed the wins, the scores were no indication of the caliber of play. A great amount of improvement was evident in the Tiger squad not only from last year to this year, but from the beginning to the end of the season too. The team kept within reasonable margins of their competitors, keeping fans in gripping susp ense. The outcome found the opponents on top 4 times out of 20, but the 4 times we came out the victors upstaged the defeats. (Left to Right) J. W Simpson, G Amaya, C. Jefferson, M. Foard, K Roderick, C. Tiger Basketball team put their best foot forward once again. Improvement from last year was evident and continued through the year. The loss of the games gave no indication of the kind of game played. The junior squad put out 100% effort and was rewarded with the kinds of victories they hungered for. In the mid-March District Tournament the Tabb gymnasts stayed right up there, pushing hard for first place, but finished with a tight second. Gymnastics 145 Varsity Cheerleaders Keep Spirit at a High The undying spirit and vitality of the varsity squad cheered the football team through an agonizing season and a basketball season equally frustrating. Jubilant in victory and reassuring in defeat, the varsity cheerleaders generated pep to keep the Tiger spirit high. During summer they attended camp to learn new chants and cheers and went door-to-door selling donuts for funds. New impact was added to pep rallies with comic routines by the varsity squad. Whether keeping up spirit at games or raising morale at pep rallies the varsity cheerleaders kept both team and spectator spirits at a high. 146 Varsity Cheerleaders I J. V. Spirit High, Despite Small Crowds The rookie junior varsity cheerleading squad got off to a slow start but soon proved to be an ambitious group. It often seemed useless cheering for a crowd of ten, sometimes less, but the appreciation showed by the team members kept spirits high and enthusiasm loud. In addition to supporting J.V. athletics, the girls attended and supported all varsity sports and school functions. They have helped the J.V. teams receive the recognition that they deserve. As only two seniors leave the team, Lee Deskins (who played 1) and David Conrad, the team should be stronger next year with the return of the following experienced rising” seniors; David Feller, Mike Marino, Mark Darnell, Harold Sidler, and Howard Rhodes. Also a much-needed fourth court is being added for next year. Lee Deskins won the trophy for Most Outstanding Player on this years team. Harold Sidler was awarded a trophy for Most Improved Player. 156 Tennis Tennis 157 Coach Hunt, John Cinotto, Ron Kebler, Jim Cinotto, George Ballance, Rick Damon, Carl Giese, Mitch Kammeier.
