ECHO- THE 1964 SENIOR CLASS SYRACUSE HIGH SCHOOL SYRACUSE. INDIANA 964 ... A YEAR TO REMEMBER 1964 was the year SHS enrollment was boosted from 245 to 272. It was a year of freshmen discovering the be- wilderment of high school work. The sophomores, climbed to position number two on the ladder of knowledge, were now experienced individuals in the ways of school life. The juniors were busy with the prospects of producing their class play and faced with the problem of earning enough money to take the long awaited senior trip. And 43 sen- iors, after 12 years of diligent learning were now about to graduate and prepare to meet the future goals they had established. During the 1964 school year SHS students studied in seven scholastic fields with a total of 93 separate classes. The athletic-minded had a choice of five different sports in which they could participate. These sports were sparked by several enthusiastic pep sessions led by our six cheerleaders. Sock hops and convocations provided a break in the everyday routine. Of the school year we remembered our class plays, basketball games, hurried lunch hours, canteen snacks, locker chats, crowded halls, and all other things that made up 1964 . . . A YEAR TO REMEMBER. The Student Council is an organization composed of representa- tives from grades 7-12. The main objectives of the Council are to assist in obtaining suitable convocation programs, to sponsor all- school dances and social activities, and to maintain high standards of ethical conduct within the school. The Council members speak for their fellow students. They voice the opinions of the students to the administration and offer possible solutions to problems involving the student body. The Council also provides the administration with a group of students to whom they can voice their opinions, state their prob- lems, and tell the students of information involving the entire stu- dent body. This promotes a better understanding and co-operation between the students and the administration. SPONSORED by SOUTH SHORE GOLF COURSE 30 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY ROW I: S. Plymale, D. Buhrt, S. The Honor Society stresses the importance of good leadership in the school. The ”S represents scholastic achievement, which is so very vital to each and every one. C symbolizes the good charac- ter of outstanding school citizens who, in time, will become the nation’s outstanding citizens and leaders. The second S is for service to the class, school, and community. Without service, the first three qualities are lost. The Laurel Chapter of the National Honor Society was organized in Syracuse High School in 1960. The members represent the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. The goals of the National Honor Society are to serve the school, to set a good example for the student body, and to create student initiative to make better grades. Mrs. Whiteman, the librarian, is assisted by student librarians who take care of checking books in and out, shelving books, and keeping the volumes in their proper order. The shelves hold books by famous authors, both past and present, many current magazines and newspapers besides a file of back issues. During term paper-time especially, the well stocked reference shelves receive tremendous use. Sponsored by DR. E. L. FOSBRINK 52 R. Bushong, B. Arnold, S. Hooker, C- Peffley, M. Mock, S. Estep, A.
