The world has left us with a mighty big pair of shoes to fill. There's no path ahead; only un- trodden, smooth sand and our course is OUR course, our way is OUR way. We're setting off now in what we hope is the right direction; now we are leaving OUR footprints on the sands of time. Don your walking shoes and follow us. We're going to take a journey along the sands of time. You'll see many remembered landmarks --you'll be filled with nostalgia, gaiety, reminiscence. Come with us. You won't lose the way; just follow our footprints on the sands of time. 2 Wfr New' MALLS, Ui tkb Lvmcb Um, Lois leads this sextet, They concoct all the food that's et. Compliments of W. T. Mrs. Talmadge has been teaching art at SHS for six years. She instructs grade school art, high school art, and takes particular pride in her 23 member senior high art class. Her students traditionally place high in the Kosciusko County poster contest. Mr. Lentz has taught music here for seven years. He conducts the 72 member band, and the high school chorus. The band and chorus perform together twice yearly at the Christmas and Spring concerts. 13 B uu4tg, BuSutess Mr. Lentz to Mr. Ummel: And then there's this one about the salesman who . . Mr. Ummel to Donna Nicolai: How did you ever get your fin- gers caught in the keys? The business department includes bookkeeping, typing 1 2, general business and consumers economics. Eldon Ummel stresses nimble, but accurate, fingers in typing and a sharp pencil in bookkeeping. James Lentz transfers his understanding of the ways of our competitive business world to his students through general business and consumers economics. Compliments of BROWN AND BROWN BUILDERS 14 Tuc gfiikfj Db-bant't hdb Among the most progressive departments in the school is the English department. This group of teachers has geared the English program to all levels and types of stu- dents in the school. Junior high English and developmental (speedy) reading is taught by Mary Alice Witsaman. In high school the courses are separated into regular and college preparatory English. Mary B. Rigdon teaches all juniors in a course closely paralleling junior U.S. history. Max Ellen Wagner teaches eighth, ninth, and tenth graders in both divisions of English. David Howard teaches regular twelfth grade English. Philip Fawley teaches speech, college preparatory tenth grade, and the sen- ior college prep course. In this senior course the students study English literature and creative writing. Compliments of KLINK’S CROCERY AND MARKET 15 Mr. Fawley to Mr. Howard with Mrs. Rigdon, Mrs. Wagner, and Mrs. Witsa- man: How does this sound? A rose is a rose is a petunia! How Mr. Fawley to A1 Bauer: Lie lay, lain? should 1 know? C OM dj Qt Uste fo I ? Mr. Yoder to Mrs. Rigdon: So that's where Spain is! The language department offers full two year courses in two languages--Spanish and Latin. Mrs . Rigdon includes a study of classical history and mythology in her Latin curriculum. A study of the relationship between Latin and English is also em- phasized . In Spanish Mr. Yoder encourages group converstaion in advanced classes . A tape recorder and records are used to aid the students in correct pronunciation and diction. This year a conversational Spanish course was introduced in the eighth grade as a foundation for later years . Mr. Yoder to Sandy Price and Brad Bauer: No, llamo is NOT a male llama! Compliments of SYRACUSE LICENSE BRANCH, Mary K. Canshorn, Manager Pbopl CtM l Petes Mr. Longenbaugh to Mr. Crampton with Mr. Yoder and Mr. Howard: And I heard this other Kennedy joke ... The intent of the social sciences department of our school is to enable the student to be a better informed citizen of our country, and more importantly, of our world. In junior high the students are introduced to basic world history and Indiana history taught by Loren Longenbaugh and Robert Yoder. Sophomores and juniors study ad- vanced world history and United States history, taught by Richard Crampton. David Howard instructs the senior course of government and psychology. Stan Smith and Sherry Burson to Mr. Howard: But you can't give us D's just because we're for Bayh ? Compliments of WAWASEE SPORTSMAN'S CENTER 17 -4 DO The science department at Syracuse High School enjoys the newest and finest of teaching equipment--swing-out demonstration panels, a fume chamber, and a green- house. Richard Edwards begins the future scientists with good basic knowledge in his general science class. Rollin Cutter then takes over and helps the students explore the world of biology. Then it's Charles Davies' turn as the juniors undertake chemistry. Michael Neff finished this thorough job with a rigorous one hour devoted to discussion of the daily lesson and the other for laboratory work. How could our nation ever lose the space race? Mr. Cutter to Mr. Edwards, Mr. Neff, and Mr. Davies: Then I put this live frog in the vat and you should have heard them scream! 18 Mr. Neff to Sam Bushong, Rick Hocker, and Steve Yoden Nahthing happened! Let's add a few more grams. HR2 Syracuse High School offers a varied range of mathematics courses. Future Albert Einsteins may take advantage of the full two years of algebra and the one semester senior course in college algebra. These students will also probably take geometry and trigonometry in their preparation for college. Michael Neff and Charles Davies teach the academic series of math courses. General or business math is taught by Gareth Meek to benefit those planning to continue their education. It is often wise for these students to acquire one year’s experience in basic algebra. The mathematics department enters two contests yearly--the National Math Contest and the Indiana High School Achievement program. The high standing of students in these tests indi- cate the fine quality of math at SHS. 19 f-fo+wfis, UcumhiPM, OmjI f-fogs Mrs. Baumgartner to Mr. Edwards and Mr. Alford: It says right here to add the eggs; THEN beat! The practical arts department includes industrial arts, home economics, and vo- cational agriculture. Mr. Alford stresses precision with the hammer and nail, and his industrial arts students take pride in a re-assembled motor. The class members demonstrate their achievements at the yearly Industrial Arts Show. Mrs. Baumgart- ner’s classes in home economics cover such fields as sewing, cooking, and family living. Their annual pride is the dress review. Mr. Edwards prepares his students to be better farmers in an ever progressive field of agriculture. These future far farmers look forward to the judging contests where they can apply classroom knowl- edge to practical situations. Mrs. Baumgartner to Judy Bryan with Vicki Kline: You ate all our food! How could you? 20 Ut’s ft’s Uf to'Yow, Uifee-. Fif- teen members from all grades speak for their fellow students, letting their opinions be known to the administration. They lis- ten for news and concerns of the faculty and principal and they pass the word along to others. Finally they lead in the for- mation of policies, students attitudes, and school betterment. The council believes that there are areas like citizenship, sportsmanship, morals, and discipline, in which youth can better handle and correct themselves. The student council is prov- ing this belief to be true. Jim Felts and Marilyn Martin, King and Queen of 1962, lead off the annual Spring Dance. The Laurel Chapter of the National Honor Society was organized at Syracuse High School in 1960. Since then, the original membership of fifteen has increased to seven- teen members. The Honor Society is composed of students who maintain a scholastic average of B or better with a Satisfactory in citizenship. Membership is based on scholastic standing, character, leadership, and service. The purposes of the Honor Society are to create student initiative to make better grades, to set a good example for the student body, and to serve the school. This year, a tutoring service was offered to students in grades seven through twelve who were having difficulties with their studies . A suggestion box for constructive criticism was continued. A award of academic letters is being considered for students with a high scholastic rating.
