I For six years she hs been Dean of Synodical College. For six years she has molded and shaped the lives of the students of this college into women of culture and high purpose. She has made college life home life by binding us into one large family. She has created a feeling of sisterhood among the students-a fine and treasured college spirit that has been developed throughout the past six years. She has been a progressive instructor, a Willing and helpful adviser, a sympathizer in troubleg above all a loyal sponsor whose inspiring personality and deep devotion to the advancement of the interest and welfare of the students, and her unselfish service to the college have placed her on a high pedestal in the hearts of all Synodical girls. ...--....--1... I ,X Y 1 X tc IULIAN C. STOY B.S. in ME., B.S. Bzzsilirm Mazzagca' One of the .most important steps Synodical has taken in its progress toward a greater college is that of the recent employment of julian C. Stoy as Business Man- ager. Mr. Stoy is widely known throughout the state not only as a very successful man in this type of work, but also as an expert in Field activities. This fact has largely been responsible for the marked increase in the school's enrollment for this year. His experience, however, extends far back in this line of work. After completing his high school work at the Academy of Richmond County, Augusta, Georgia, he re- ceived the degrees of HS. in MF., Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College, and BS. from the University of Missouri, he became a member of the faculty of Mis- souri Military Academy and afterwards of McMillan High School, Mexico, Missouri. Later he was chosen principal of the Chillicothe High School. In l9ZO he returned to Missouri Military Academy as principal. Three years later he took up his work as teacher and secretary of Hardin College. The rapid development of that school within the last few years has been largely attributed to him. From Hardin he came to Synod- ical early last fall to assume his duties as Business Manager. Not only is he proving himself of worth in managing the linances of the college, but he has placed himself high in the estimation of students and faculty through his spirit of whole-hearted cooperation toward school activities. Especially is this evi- denced through the loyal support which he gives to the Y. YV. C. A. and other organi- zations in the school. He often makes the chapel services both educational and en- tertaining since he has a special art of creating enthusiasm in others. It is by these qualities that he has won a warm spot in the heart of every Seminole. -----.M-. -..-.,.--ffQi S X - iwezzly-mic Faczzlfy HUGH L. BATES V MRS. ELLA MARTIN CAVE A.B. Not only has it been an effective means through which certain rules and regula- tions are made and upheld, but is highly desirable from the standpoint of personal value to the girls. It has cultivated principles of individual responsibility, upheld the highest ideals of good citizenship, and taught the benefits derived from self-discipline. In every phase of college life high standards of personal honor and a readiness to accept responsibility for the welfare of others has been stressed. Unity in this pur- pose, Which has ultimately lead to the fullest and richest of the joys of college life has marked every action taken by Student Government. For instance: Who can soon forget the night the Freshies were kindly but firmly commanded to- dance around the bonfire and sing the college songs and then surrender their caps to their respective Seniors? The speeches that followed! Noble, weren t they? Believe it or not! Turningto a more serious scene the first Y. W. C. A. chapel program was lovely and inspiring as the entire student body responded to the call for membership. But the most exciting thirty minutes of the year was the morning Mr. Stoy de- liberately held us in suspense for hours it seemed before he announc d the official beginning of the Christmas holidays. We were reduced to- chills and tears when the date was finally announced-! ! ! Time out for three cheers for the Faculty! Speaking of the fall of Rome-Rome doesnt even hold a candle to the time Helens and Mary Helens bed fell. Craslz! Silence. I' hen a chorus from the hostile group at the door Will you please keep quiet? At the flick o'f the light 'why was it even the cold wrath of those enforcing Student Government laws joined in shrieks of laughter? Now I ask you! Do you remember the night the residents of the Theta Tau suite deemed it neces- sary to take their church cut to learn the Alma Mater? In spite of the applause it didn t go over so bi '. Ahem. I wonder why? And honestly now, wasnt it a shame the way food disappeared out of the pantry? Even our best friends won t tell us how. Evidently it tasted like more. Then silence again. Six times this mysterious performance was repeated. The sounds ranged from low, deep tones to high, shrill, and wavering notes. I could stand the suspense no longer, so I started around the back way to the studio, and cautiously looking in the Window l beheld six of my school- mates trying out for the Sextette. After faithful and persistent practice the Sextette sang in chapel, and who said they couldn't sing, anyway? By the clever songs, dances, and solos the audience was carried along from the opening chorus of little boys and girls to the old time sweetheart, and as a climax the modern and beloved, Miss America. Needless to say the re- spective choruses and dances were encored many times. And wasn't the harmony good of the quartet on Roll Dem Bones ? The Swagger Stick Chorus showed talent and much time spent in prep- aration. The song by Mr. Stoy with the chorus of sweethearts of different times and lands was both charming and entertaining. Perhaps one of the most lovely and effective scenes of the entire performance was the Sun- beam and Moonbeam chorus. Two performances were given and a large audience was present each time. ' Books AS FRIENDS One should consider books as the best friends one has because they are silent inHuences for joy, sorrow, good, and evil. Good books are to be cultivated and read as carefully and often as one finds need for their influence. Likewise, bad books should be shunned and avoided with as much persistence as evil companions. Some people think of books as merely ornamental factors in the decoration of their homes. They buy them for the beauty of their bindings and with no thought, or care for what treasures they may have hidden behind those beautiful covers. Again, there are those who think of books as long, dry chronicles of uninteresting facts and would be quite bored if one suggested their reading a book for the pleasures they would receive from it. But I wonder just how interesting these same people are to talk to as long as the conversation does not follow the topics of fashions, golf and bridge? One may take a book for every, or any mood they happen to be in, whether it be adventure, mystery, romance, or a bit of nonsense and find the characters por- traying one or more of those moods. People may grow old and tiresome-things may become old-but-books' never grow old. Each time one picks one up to read again the passage that so ap- pealed to them they find the same interest and feel the same sense of joy or sorrow through which the actors are going. A book friend is always the same andhmay be depended upon throughout the years that elapse before it is reread. ' M.H.C. THE SONG OE THE LARK The misty veil of morn is quivering on The breeze, while far upon the waiting hills With rosy fingers folding back the mists, Aurora greets the dawnfa dawn that breathes And trembles with the prayers of flowers meek, A dawn that dances, glistens, hesitates To chase away thebeauties of the night Up from the pearly meadow soars a song- A song that whispers, all is well, unto The listening ear-a song that lingering through The day in hearts that toil and wait, spurs on Their sagging hopes and cheers their lonely sphere. Standing on the Lookout some three hundred feet in front of Dobbin's Hall at the School of the Ozarks I awaited the coming of Dawn. The sky was without a cloud, the moon in its last quarter had just riseng there were the Pleiades just above the horizon shedding their sweet influence in the East, Jupiter, two hours high, was the herald of the dayg Lyra was sparkling near the zenithg Andromeda veiled her but recently discovered glories from the naked eye in the Southg while the steady Pointers far be- neath the pole looked up meekly from the North. In all it was a beautiful sight. Then the timid approach of twilight became more perceptableg the small stars closed their eyes and fell to rest behind the glow that kindled the East. The sister beams of the Pleiades melted togetherg the smaller stars of the Milky Way faded outg then, when the East was streaked with red and the Hames of day were reaching out with arms that unfolded the darkness, the watch stars closed their eyes as tired children and fell into the slumber lands of the heavens. The whole world was filled with the inflowing tide of the morning light and the day had dawned. , I. I.. I-I..
