Getting thin to win lt'sjustminutes before weigh-intime atthe biggest match ofthe season. john Q. Wrestler is still trying to shed that final pound so that he can drop to a lower weight class. He has gone without food for three days, he has spent hours in the sauna, he has run 87 miles around the gym in the last two days and now at last he is ready to wrestle. Or is he? While it is true that john Q. has the advantage of being at the upper end of his new weight class, he is pinned immediately because every ounce of energy has been sapped from his body. Such a rapid weight loss causes john Q. to become ill he lapses into a coma and dies. The above situation, while quite fictitious and certainly exaggerated, can be useful in making a point. According to senior Thad Q'Brien, if the coach decides a player must drop aweightclass, he usually receives a few days notice. We try to keep our weight steady throughout the season, he added.
