Captain D. Bruce Cargill graduated from the Ugiverrsligy gg Washington as an NROTC Midshipmaln earning 3 age , Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He WaS C0f1jm'55'l0'fed an Ensign in -june l958, received orders to the 'Naval Air'Training Command and in September l959, was awarded his Aviator s Wings. Early assignments as a pilot were with VS-24 and VS-27 at the Naval Air Station Norfolk,Virginia. While there, he-.deployed aboard the USS VALLEY FORGE, USS ESSEX and USS lNTREPlDto Medi- d th Atlantic waters terranean an Nor - I Captain Cargill attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate SCITOOA Monterey, California from l963 until l965. In l966, he comp ete further study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology gradu- ating with degrees of Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering and Engineer of Aeronautics and Astronautics. His next tour of duty was at the Naval Air Station, Lemoore, California, with VA-22, flying the A-4' Skyhawk. He made two combat deployments to Southeast Asia in USS RANGER and USS BON HOMME RICHARD earning sixteen Air Medals, a Navy Com- mendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. ln I969, Captain Cargill reported to the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent, Maryland and was assigned to the Weapons Systems Test and Flight Test Division. As Program Manager of the Automatic Carrier Landing System Project, he worked extensively with most of the Navy's aircraft carriers and many Naval Air Stations. A Following refresher training at NAS, Lemoore, California, he reported to VA-l I3, also at Lemoore, as Executive Officer and again deployed to the Gulf of Tonkin aboard USS RANGER. ln April l973, Captain' Cargill became Commanding Officer of VA-I I3 and upon returni-ng to CONUS was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Captain Cargill underwent Nuclear Power Training followed by an assignment on the Naval Air Force, U,S, Atlantic Fleet staff as the Senior Member of the Electronics Examining Board. On May 7, I976 he assumed duty as Executive Officer aboard USS JOHN F, KENNEDY KCV-673 and completed both North Atlantic and Medi- terranean deployments. He was then assigned to the staff of the Commander Naval Air Force. U.S. Atlantic Fleet, this time as FOFCC Training Officer. In ceremonies in Naples, Italy ons 28 February I979, Captain Cargill became the Commanding Officer of USS SYLVANIA QAF5-Qj, CAPTAIN D. BRUCE CARGlLL, USN FORMER COMMANDINGOFFICER a combat stores ship homeported in Norfolk, Virginia. 'Captain Cargill is married to the former Jane A. Scott of Norfolk Virginia and presently resides in Virginia Beach. Virginia. CAPTAIN ANTHONY w. sToEcKE1., USN PRESENT COMMANDING OFFICER I Captain Anthony Wayne Stoeckel was born in Newport, Kentucky on 25'july l935, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert W. Stoeckel. He attended Villa Madonna College in Covington, Kentucky prior to entering the Navy. Upon completion of flight training in August, l957, he was designated a Naval Aviator. Captain Stoeckel first served in VS-27 homeported in Norfolk. Virginia, before reporting to VS-30 in Key West as a Flightrln- structor.Following his tour with the Replacement Training Squadron. he served in USS INTREPID KCVS-Ill as Hangar Deck Officer. Captain Stoeckel then attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in MOMSFGY. receiving his Bachelor of -Arts Degree in Political Science. In' August l968, he joined VS-29 which deployed in USS KEARSARGE CCVS-335. During that tour, he served as Adminis- trative Officer, Safety Officer, and Maintenance Officer. Captain Stoeckel's next assignment was as a student at the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, upon completion of whiCl1 he attended the University of Washington, earning a Masters Degfee in Public Administration. In August l973, he reported to NAS N0.l'fl'l Island as 5Pecial Projects Officer for Commander Anti-submarine Warfare Wing. U.S. Pacific Fl-eet. In june I974, Commander Stoeckel reported aboard VS-2l as Executive Officer and assumed command H1 ,ll-Irie l975. Following his aviation commands tour, ,Capfalfl Stoeckel served as the S-3A .Training and Readiness officer Wlth Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. 'Captain Stoeckel's most recent assignment has been with Phe Chief Of Naval Operations Staff under the .Director of Avlaflon Plans and Pl'08VamS COP-OSD, as the S-3A Program Coordinator: A ,Captain Stoeckel reports to uss sYl.vANlA via the Senior Off'Ce 'S SlllD'S Material Readiness course in idaho Falls. ldaho and theAPCO School at Newport, Rhode Island. Captain Stoeckel's awards include the Vietnamese CFOSS of GallaflUY. Vietnamese Service, Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal and the'Navy Achievement Medal. h 1 . , He is married to the former Bonnie Beard of Norfolk, Vif8'n'?' Thei' reside with their five children, Mark, Melanie, Matthew. Eric and Warren in Vienna, Virginia. Captain Stoeckel assumed command of USS SYLVANIA lAF5'2l on IO -june l98O in Barcelona, Spain.
