Mus. FRANKIE jscxsox .Valli MR. ROBERT jnxxixs illuxir Chairman 52.5 MRS. MABEL Joi-ixsrox Srirncz' Miss JANE joses .Music LIBRARY AND AUDIO-VISUAL DISPARTMFNT A fully accredited library and a smooth functioning audio- visual program are wonderful additions to the teaching resources of a school. An adequate collection of books- fiction, nonfiction, biography, encyclopedia, reference works -is essential to the teaching of any high school subject. Add to this, facilities for use of periodicals and a room conducive to research and study and you have a library that meets the needs of a school. Over the years, Sylvan has built up a library that yearly more closely approaches this ideal. hlany hours of hard work have been spent providing these basic facilities for student use. An important division of the Sylvan library is the Audio- Visual Department. Sylvan's program of the use of audio- visual materials is recognized as one of the finest in the city. This department supplies equipment, Elms, and opera- tors to bring these teaching aids into the classrooms. As a convenience for students and to raise money for added equipment, the Audio-Visual Department operates a store selling school supplies. This is indeed a valuable service to Sylvan and its students. MRS. ANNE KINARD llfallh-Phyfifal Eduralion Mk. Dsvio Kxisma' lllalh Mks. LUcn.E LYLE Home Economifr Chairman 1? Mas. Vuzcism Prrosis Businfxs Education M AT H DE PA RT M E N 'I' Sylvan'S Nlathematics Department offers a full range of courses from arithmetic to trigonometry. The courses are designed to give each student the background in math that fills his needs. The success of this Department is demon- strated by the good showing Sylvan students have made in national competitions and their success in college and busi- ness life. Again this year, Sylvan offers math courses to fill specific needs in the College Preparatory courses. Two spe- cial advanced classes in algebra-one eighth grade and one ninth grade-are offered to those students who qualify. Also there are classes for students who need special help in math. This program is fine, but without good teachers it would be worthless. Fortunately the good teachers are here, and the students benefit from their excellence. M ILITA RY DICP.-X RTM ENT Sylvan's Military Department is a vital part of the school. YVe have been fortunate to have excellent military instruc- tors assigned to Sylvan, but none were liner than those who served us this year. These instructors not only cared for their own department, but cooperated with the entire school program in a manner to be greatly appreciated. They as- sisted with the athletic program, assisted with the student activity program, held study halls and generally made them- selves useful and, as a result, very well lil-led and appreci- ated. By their example, they lead their students to dignity, discipline, cooperation, responsibility as well as giving them military training of a most useful nature. IS
