YVithout a corps of men and women dedicated to the task of teaching young people, a school could not exist. Sylvan is indeed fortunate that it has a faculty that is interested in discovering and developing the talents and abilities of its students. Divided into fourteen departments, Sylvan's faculty can serve a di- versity of interests among their students. That they succeed in inspiring and instructing their students is attested by the success achieved by these same students in college and in business. ART DEPARTMENT Two major purposes served by the .-Xrt Department are to discover and develop the artistic talents of students and to bring about a greater appreciation of the artistic treasures of the world. Ifvidence of their work is clearly visible around the school. Posters, bulletin boards, and other dis- plays tastefully advertise school programs and activities. No school event--assembly, concert, pep meeting, ban- quet-is really complete without the handiwork of the Art Department. The xvork of this department certainly makes life at school more enjoyable and provides the basis for a fuller appreciation of asthetic beauty in future years. BUSINESS EDUCATION DEPARTNIFNT Atlanta being a commercial and business center, there is a great demand for fully qualined typists, stenographers. bookkeepers, and general office workers. Graduates of Syl- van's Business lTiLlUCZ1fiOI1 Program have no trouble at all finding a place in this world of commerce. The four mem- bers of the business faculty do an expert job in providing the training needed by their students. In addition, they go beyond the line of duty to encourage students and help them find places in the business world. Members of this depart- ment have received national recognition for their efforts. To assist him in the operation of the school, Mr. lfain has assembled an able staff. The secretaries, the bookkeeper, the nurse, the cafeteria managers, and the custodian all make signihcant contributions to the success of the school. 3 COUNSELING DFPARTMENT .-Xny school is fortunate to have counselors who can and will assist with the various problems that come up during high school years. Sylvan is fortunate to have counselors who are generous with their time and energy. They assist with such things as personal problems, course selection, scheduling diliiculties, career selection, choice of college, search for scholarships and jobs, and many others. Perhaps one service they perform is often over-looked. That is, they are always willing to lend a sympathetic ear to one who just needs to talk a problem out. These services and their en- couragement to greater achievement in all walks of student life has helped many to a greater appreciation of the need to take fullest advantage of the opportunities available at Sylvan and after graduation. HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMIQNT Almost every girl will some day be responsible for the management of a home and the care of a family. Our Home Economies Department provides valuable training toward the day when these tasks will be the most important part of their life. Cooking, sewing, nutrition, home nursing, consumer purchasing, and home management are all taught at various stages of this departmentls program. More im- portant. perhaps. is the opportunity for association with the line ladies who teach these courses. By their personal example, they inspire their students to a better and fuller life. MR.
